Plumbing Advice That Can Save You Money
When you are working on your plumbing, there is a lot that can go wrong. You may be able to fix some problems easily, while others will take more effort. Whatever the problem you're having, you need to be informed about plumbing before you start. The advice and tips in this article should help you quickly and safety fix your issues.

Obnoxiously loud pipes that like to squeal and hammer are easy situations to correct. Exposed pipes need to be properly anchored. For pipes that are situated inside walls, or the floor or ceiling, you should hire a professional.

Your septic tank should be pumped out at least once every five years if you want it to stay in optimum working order. Deposit and debris build up in your tank can result in major problems. Hiring a professional to pump out your septic tank is costly, but it is far preferable to the damages that could be incurred if the tank becomes backed-up or inoperative.

It is important that you do not pay a plumber in full, until all of the work is complete and satisfactory. You may need to pay some money in the beginning, though you should not pay the full cost until you can be certain that the job was done correctly. This ensures that the plumber fully completes the job before getting paid.

Don't put fat, grease and other oils into the drain. These substances will harden as soon as they cool down, and clog your drains. Especially if you operate a garbage disposal, the fat causes blades to be less efficient. Dump your oil outside or in a container that you throw out with the regular trash.

If you encounter a problem with your garbage disposal, resist the urge to reach in and fix it with your bare hands. A garbage disposal can be dangerous, even when it is not on. Search online for a troubleshooting manual for your disposal.

By installing water-conserving shower heads in your bathrooms, you can save money on your monthly water bill. Most of the hot water we use is in the shower. Install energy saving faucets throughout your home and you can recapture your cost within the year.

Don't treat your toilet like a garbage can if you want to avoid a lot of potential plumbing problems. Under no circumstances flush cotton balls or swabs, paper towels, diapers, sanitary pads or other materials that will not dissolve. These items can cause major clogs. In addition, you should only use the amount of toilet paper that is absolutely necessary when cleaning yourself.

Here is a good tip for a safe, inexpensive way to keep the drain in your bathtub trouble-free. Take one cup of baking soda and pour it into the drain. Then do the same with a cup of vinegar. Do this procedure once a month. This will cause the vigorous bubbling you may remember from the "volcano" in a grade school science project, so be sure to close the drain with a stopper. Let that sit for a while, and then run boiling hot water down it. This process should open up the pipes by clearing out hair build-up and soap scum.

As it is with anything, good preparation and education are keys to avoiding problems, and this holds true with plumbing as well. By learning more about plumbing, a homeowner can make the right decisions and reduce the chance of plumbing problems. Furthermore, taking the initiative to thoroughly research and study the problem in advance of making repairs will save time and money.
