Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 08
This shoreline furnishes excellent mackerel sport fishing while in most of the period when these minn kota maxxum are in north waters. Basically no gill-netters work here, the space to market getting great and the chance of rough weather and the lack of harmless harbor rendering it dangerous for small create. From this expand of shore (mostly from off Chatham) there were landed at Boston in the year 1923, 66 fares with a full of 1,797,826 pounds valued at $76,875.

The Shoal Ground, stretches easterly from Thacher Tropical isle, has depths from twenty to thirty fathoms across a bottom of gravel and sand. This area is about 15 kilometers long by 5 miles wide and is an important pollock ground within their spawning time as well as a good fall cod-fishing ground. It can be about 12 miles E. by N. from Thacher Island to its center and 21 kilometers SE. by S. from the Isle of Shoals. Flounder draggers also operate right here on the shoal ground and around Thacher Island but mostly to eastward & southeastward.

Tillies Bank. [13] This bears E & S from Eastern Position Light just dropping Thacher Island Light, then 3 miles even farther for best angling: and E. by S. ? S. from Thacher Island, Cape Ann, that the shoal on the centre of the ground is distant 18 miles. This can be a small difficult spot with depths of from 25 to 28 fathoms, away from which the water deepens to 40 fathoms over a substantial area. The duration of the entire terrain is about 10 miles inside an E. and W. path and the thickness about 5 miles. Prior to reaching the mud at still higher depths but an area of shoal water connects this ground with West Jeffreys, at the advantage it slips off rapidly to depths of 50 to 60 fathoms. The bottom is rocky and hard over the greater part of the bank. Tillies was earlier regarded as the best fishing grounds off Cape Ann and is still resorted to for haddock and cod in the spring season and slip; for hake in thespring and summer, and tumble, and for pollock in the fall and spring. The fishing is mainly by trawling, together with the gillnetters operating on the shoal grounds in under 50 fathoms.

Earlier this fishery was virtually entirely maintained by trawlers and hands-liners, but the gill-web fishery on these reasons is of great and steadily expanding importance. Of late the bigger part of the haddock catch is taken with the "otter-trawl" technique, this items being run by steamers of substantial size and upon the better distant grounds, such as Georges Bank, the South Route, and the Western Bank. The identical change to minn kota maxxum reasons farther offshore has to an incredible extent happened in the number of larger sailing vessels, therefore leaving Jeffreys and other inshore banks for the smaller art; except that, together with the high prices of haddock and cod in the winter months, it is often profitable for these greater vessels to work off to near-by banks first set and return to harbour the same day.

Pollock Rip Grounds. These lay between Pollock Rip Lightship and Shovelful Lightship and extend northward to Pollock Rip Shoal. These grounds are 3 a long way long, E. and W., by 2 miles N. and S. The depths range from 4 to 12 fathoms. These are generally fished from Monomoy and in stormy weather conditions from Chatham instead of visiting the Crab Ledge. Late early in the year and at the beginning of the drop the cod move inshore. In winter the cod leave Pollock Rip for the much deeper water.

Tobins. A name given to a piece of soil about 20 miles sq . lying S. by E. from the Highland Light. It runs from about 40 miles to about 60 mls offshore, the depths slowly increasing since the bottom ski slopes away consistently from the shoreline from 75 to 95 fathoms spanning a bottom of clay, beach sand, and pebbles. Cod are taken in thespring and summer, and fall, and haddock inMarch and Feb ., and April. A few hake are used here in summer season, but, as opposed to the grounds off Chatham, this is not that need considering a hake ground.

A little shoal in the western portion of the Cove of Jeffreys, having 50 fathoms over a base of light blue clay and rocks and rising through the 70 and 60 fathom soundings about it, is approximately 1? a long way long by about 3/4 mile broad. This shoal is SSE. from Benefit Island 15 miles. It really is a winter floor for haddock and cod.

Thanks E. from your buoy on Ammens Rock and roll about 12 miles is a ridge that goes up from the 100 to 120 fathom depths about it to some depth of around 80 fathoms over a underside of brokensoil and floor, and shells. This shoaler piece is a few 3 miles long. N. by E. and S. by NW., by 1 mile wide. It furnishes good minn kota maxxum for cod, hake, and cusk in the spring, April being the very best season.

Outer Crab Ledge. The center is situated about 14 miles ESE from Chatham Lights. It extends about 5 or 6 miles in a N. and S. direction and it is about 1 mile large. Depths work from 19 to 23 fathoms; the bottom is difficult. The minn kota maxxum is principally for cod within the fall, spring season and winter months. Vessel minn kota maxxum the following is principally early in the year.

Cusk are plentiful in this article in the spring, by incorporating in the slip. Cod are taken every one of the year around, the Spring season school getting the largest. Hake are most numerous In the slip and springtime months, and haddock are not common however are most quite a few in winter.

The Ridge (about the southern part of Fippenies). This really is SSE. from your light-ship at Portland 75 miles and has a bottom of yellow mud and pebblesdepths and pebbles of 75 to 95 fathoms. Cod are present in December and January; cusk the entire year around, but a majority of numerous in February and March; haddock in January and December; hake in October and September. The length of this bank originates from 4 to 5 mls and the width somewhat lower than 2 mls. It lies in an ENE. and WSW. direction.

This ridge lies in a SE. and NW. course, extending somewhat indefinitely but for at least 10 miles by about 3 miles in width. Around the ridge the base is broken--a hard bottom part of black colored gravel, which normally means a great fishing spot--the depths in this article being from 85 to 90 fathoms. There are numerous dirty spots in between these harder pieces of soil where soundings run to 100 fathoms or slightly more. The surrounding bottom is generally of soil, and the depths average from 100 to 125 fathoms. There are a number of pieces of gravelly hard ground in the vicinity, each of which probably would furnish evenly good sportfishing for cod and cusk at the same periods as about the ridge.

Lying about SE. by S. ? 5. from the Isle of Shoals 20 miles, 13 kilometers S. by W. from your whistling buoy on Jeffreys, and 43 miles S. by W. from Cape Elizabeth is actually a broken piece of bottom possessing from 75 to 85 fathoms of water over it, which is a haddock ground from January to April along with a hake and cusk ground all the year.

This is considered one of the very best minn kota maxxum grounds for cod and haddock in the Gulf of Maine, but the haddock catch right here has fallen off recently. Hake are very ample during the summer season and often in the course of October about the muddy bottom part near the side. Inside 100 fathoms, with a "punkin" bottom part of stones and gravel, near the mud, haddock can be found from Dec to Mar. Cod, pollock, and cusk occur from May to October, the first kind on the difficult and gravelly portions, the latter on the deeply soundings, with the Northeast Peak the best summer ground. This is also an particularly good winter and fall terrain for haddock. Halibut tend to be found in 35 fathoms (modest minn kota maxxum) from September through December; also In spring and early summer. No gill netting of importance as yet, even if this ground is fished by vessels from Cape Cod, Mass., to Cutler, Me., mainly by trawling, some hand-lining.

Wild Pet cat Ridge. Extremely heavy tides sweep more than this ground, making it difficult to haul gear in angling upon it, whence, it is said, comes the title. It is placed NNE from Highland Light, Cape Cod, 18 miles to its the southern part of edge; SE ? S from Thacher Island 31 mls; and is about 7? miles long within a to the south and north direction by about 3? miles large. The bottom is difficult, of broken shells and sand, and depths are from 45 to 60 fathoms. There are 100 fathom depths inside of the terrain and from 100 to 110 fathoms outside of it. Apparently, it is really an all the year ground for cod, cusk, and haddock, although but little fished at any time aside from the winter seasons.

This banking institution is now generally an Italian boat ground and is utilized by small create from Boston and Gloucester. Gill-netting here is specifically extensive in Dec and November, mostly for pollock. Netters operate about 22 kilometers SSE. from Eastern Part of 22 to 25 fathoms on a tough bottom. Excellent pollock attracts are made in 25 to 40 fathoms in the southeastern and eastern slopes within the latter component of November and early December. Haddock are here from November 1 to March 1 and from April 20 to May 15. Cod exist all the season, the largest university occurring during August, Sept . and October. It is actually a cusk floor from November to March in the deeper water. What seems a somewhat unusual occurrence over these later several years was the appearance of a considerable college of halibut on the north slope of Stellwagen over the past half of April 1926, numerous small craft getting from 2,000 to 3,000 kilos in their fares.

[Footnote 13: There has been some supposition as to the beginning of the considerably unusual title of this financial institution. The writer would note that there is an Edward Tillie inside the Company of Captain John Smith as he explored this region in 1614 along with a Tilly (perhaps the same man or woman) who run a sport fishing station at Cape Ann throughout the years 1625 and 1624.]

Jeffreys Ledge. Of relatively small dimensions, even though jeffreys Ledge could be considered one of the better fishing grounds from the Gulf of Maine. It appears to be an extension of the shoal soil that makes off in an easterly direction from Cape Ann, it is about 20 miles long inside a NE. and SW. direction and about 4 miles large. Its the southern area of limits is 42? 54' and its upper limit 43? north latitude; its eastern and western borders may be positioned at 69? 70 and 58'? 18' to the west longitude. The bottom is difficult on the shoaler parts, with gravel and pebbles about the edges. Depths on the lender are from 27 to 35 fathoms, falling to 40 or 50 on the ends. The shoalest water lies from 4 to 5 miles N. by E. from the buoy, where there is 22 fathoms. Ordinarily there is little or no tide, with an occasional present SW. There are, however, solid westerly currents with the heavy easterly winds, and often right after a period of minor weather without any strong tides there will suddenly develop a heavy SW. stream, indicating the approach of the strong northwester. This seems a general rule in the Gulf of Maine and is, probably, prevalent over much of our North Atlantic coast.

Nantucket Shoals. This expand of bars and further waters involving, roughly triangular in develop with its apex at the to the north, lies across the western edge of the Southern Channel, stretching out S. and SE. in the southern finish of Cape Nantucket and Cod Island. From Monomoy Point to Rogers Sport fishing Terrain, on the eastern edge of Phelps Bank, it really is SSE. 80 miles. Its width from Southeast Rips to the western edge of New South Shoal is 40 miles. The location includes a number of "angling spots" and shoals, among which the following are the most important: Pollock Rip Crown, Rose and Ground Shoal, Fantastic Rip, Davis Bank, Minn Kota Maxxum Rip, New and Old South Shoal, and Phelps Bank.

The Cod Ridge (formerly Outer Harris Terrain). This lies NE. from your Northeast Peak of New Ledge, distant 7 miles. It extends within an ENE. and WSW. direction, the ground thinning and the water deepening on the eastward, the shoal terrain having 45 fathoms with a bottom of small pebbles and okay black sand and gravel, depths increasing in all other instructions to 100 fathoms around the mud and sloping off somewhat steeply, especially about the southeast area, where the drop is very distinct. The length of the floor is about 5 miles, the width 1 mile. This is an all-the-year cod ground, the season of greatest large quantity being from May 1 to October. The haddock are usually With their greatest numbers here from January 1 to Apr. Apparently no large number of cusk or hake are considered here on the ridge, perhaps because the water is not deep enough for your former, aside from the small minn kota maxxum, that are of small value towards the fishermen; as well as the ground will not be muddy ample for the second option species. Both kinds, however, are located about the ends in the deep water, the cusk on the sharpest, hardest part of the bottom part (perhaps most frequent in Feb . and Mar), the hake, as usual, on the muddy components about it.

Morris Ledge. This lies eastward of Chatham which is a favorite floor for certain cod fishermen throughout spring and early summer season. Schooners and small craft operate on this page.

East side of Cape Cod. The sea bottom away from the east aspect of Cape Cod is primarily sandy and slopes away gradually in the beach, getting to depths of 30 to 40 fathoms at 5 to 7 miles from land. Beneath Chatham the slope is even more slow. Within these limits excellent catches of cod are taken sometimes, and to a less degree the same is true of haddock. Far away from the shoreline, in from 40 to 80 fathoms and from a point 8 or 10 miles away from the Highlands of Cape Cod to another point lying 20 miles or even more SSE. from Chatham Lamps, is a ongoing stretch of excellent haddock grounds for winter fishing. The deep h2o off Chatham furnishes excellent hake minn kota maxxum in drop and summertime.

Clay-based Ridge. At various details about the corners of Jeffreys Ledge are small separate ridges, which in their season are good minn kota maxxum reasons. The present component of ground is situated 26 mls S. by W. from your lightship at Portland, which course and distance deliver us to the northern advantage. There is a 50-fathom shoal of small dimensions upon it, but somewhere else soundings regular from 65 to 70 fathoms over a bottom of hard clay-based. The length of the ground is about 4 miles NNE. and SSW., and the breadth about 1 mile. This furnishes good haddocking in January, February. and Mar. the latter 30 days showing the ideal fishing.

Off Newburyport and N. and SW. of the Isle of Shoals are gill-netting grounds that are very much used. Trawling and netting are carried on, beginning in 40 fathoms in February and March and working off to 70 fathoms off Salisbury Bench in May. Cod are on this ground about two weeks in October as well as in March and Feb are found in abundance away Boars Head. Hake are present here all the fall and are found all along the southeast side of such grounds in depths of 45 to 60 fathoms. A certain amount of halibut may be taken in most several years at various points with a bottom of hard pea gravel in springtime and early summer in 35 to 65 fathoms. In most several years a large amount of mackerel is taken on Jeffreys, notably so in 1925. Herring, also, tend to be abundant in "herring years".

Apparently the abundance of cod on this soil is due to the fantastic quantity of shrimps and gentle-shelled crabs found on the muddy bottom part and on the rocks that compose this ground. There seem to be a number of these deep-water reasons about and between the shoaler reasons, as around Cashes, Fippenies, and Jeffreys, which evidently serve as fairways over that the schools of hake, cod, and cusk, move from Georges Financial institution into the Gulf of Maine in the spring of the year.

Eastern Shoal Water of Cape Ann. This is generally considered an integral part of Jeffreys and is also often talked minn kota maxxum of as West Jeffreys by the anglers. It extends In an ENE. direction from Cape Ann for a range of from 15 to 18 mls. It is, the truth is, a south west continuation of Jeffreys Ledge, the two creating a nearly continuous ridge running NE. from Cape Ann a distance of approximately 42 mls. Depths in the so-called Eastern Shoal Normal water vary from 20 to 45 fathoms, the bottom being of rocks, pebbles, and coarse gravel more than most of its extent. Yellow sand and dirt happen on the corners. The eastern part of the soil is resorted to through the haddock fleet during the fall and earlier winter, as well as other parts are visited basically during the whole year forhaddock and cod, and pollock by boats and vessels from Cape Ann and by craft of various types from Boston and Portland-line trawlers, gill-netters, and a few of the new type of little otter trawlers, this second option fleet of create constantly growing in number.

About three-Dory Ridge. Beyond New Ledge and about midway between it and Harvey Blacks Ridge is a modest ridge about 3 kilometers long, operating NE. and SW., contributing to ? mile broad. This is situated SE. by S. in the Portland Lightship. 38 a long way to the shoal of 55 fathoms, which is near its center. Out of this the ground slopes away on all sides to 65 and 63 fathom depths over which area the base is made up of beach sand, mud and gravel and rocks. At these reduce depths are normally found "plumbing" (clay cylinders), the location where the fishing ends abruptly. All about the ridge are depths of 80 to 100 fathoms with a bottom of mud. This can be almost entirely a cod ground, excellent from Might to August.

Big Ridge (near Cashes Bank). It is a broken and rocky bit of bottom operating from the suggestion of the southeastern part of the ground, at about 10 mls S. from the buoy on Ammens Rock and roll and about 82 miles SE. ? S. through the lightship at Portland, to a degree about 20 miles S. by E. from the buoy named. Its length is not really to be reported definitely, in fact it is probably more than here proven. The breadth averages about 1? to 2 a long way. Depths come from 65 to 80 fathoms and more, raising gradually as it goes outside the main banking institution. The varieties and their periods of plethora here are as on Cashes Bank. Possibly this is a greater portion of a cod and cusk ground than is the main part of Cashes Bank, the cusk getting particularly ample during March and April. Halibut are found in June and May in from 50 to 60 fathoms of water. A considerable amount of the fish shown inside the table of your catch in the area contained in Cashes Financial institution may adequately have come with this piece of terrain.

Around the inner aspects of this terrain, particularly, the gill-net fleet operates widely, mainly within the full and spring, on northwest Jeffreys 8 to 12 miles E. and SE. from Thacher Island, where the bottom is beach sand and rocks. Other gill-netting grounds are 8 to 15 miles NE. by E. from Thacher Island in 22 fathoms on the hard bottom of soil and blended material of sand and gravel. The Cove of Jeffreys, NE. by E. 12 to 15 miles from Thacher Island, is a favorite haddock ground in the spring (Apr 20 to May 15) in 45 to 70 or even 80 fathoms, though gill nets are not usually fished in than 50 fathoms due to, weight from the nets from the deeper normal water. In the spring (in April and could), the haddock are available in on Scantum, 10 miles NNE. from Thacher Island between Jeffreys Ledge along with the Isle of Shoals, on the broken base of stones and blue clay in 55 to 70 fathoms.

Howard Nunans Ridge. Of similar nature to the last, this goes up 4 a long way inside of and parallel to it, lying 14 miles from Cape Porpoise on the same bearings (SE. by S. ? S.). This is apparently made up of two shoals, the northern rising to 50 fathoms of water over a rocky, broken base about 3 miles long by 1 mile broad, deepening southwesterly to a slim, muddy gully, where are 80 fathoms, and soaring again to 60 fathoms over rocks and shattered ground. The full ground is all about 8 mls long with average widths of from 1 to 1? a long way. This floor furnishes very good cod fishing and haddocking in the fall and early winter months and once again in the spring a few months.

Fifty-five Fathom Bunch. Western side of Cashes Bank is a rocky ridge extending ENE. and WSW. about 4 miles and getting a width of about 1 mile. This really is mainly a cod terrain, the periods for the kinds being as on Cashes Bank.

A small cove makes for a quick distance in the western area of Jeffreys Ledge at about 20 miles from Boon Tropical isle in a SE. by S. ? S. path. The bottom from the cove is broken and muddy, with depths of about 60 fathoms. Thence, the earth slopes away to the mouth area, where the corners about the front door are rocky and have 70 and 75 fathom depths. These rocky regions are cusk grounds inJanuary and February, and March, during which months the cove itself generally furnishes great haddock minn kota maxxum. Outside these depths the water deepens westward over a muddy bottom, where are from 80 to 90 and in many cases 100 fathoms of water. Minn Kota Maxxum is mainly by trawl and gill nets.

Jeffreys Ledge bears S. ? W. from the lightship off Portland, 19 kilometers to the north edge and 22 mls S. through the buoy around the Cry and Tone to the edge of the shoal.

Southeast Jeffreys. Off the southeast edge of Jeffreys, about 24 miles SE. from Benefit Island, is placed a piece of minn kota maxxum terrain having a challenging bottom ofsand and gravel, and stones, where depths slope out gradually through the 50-fathom soundings near the primary body from the bank to the 90-fathom symbol farther out. This area is a good ground for haddock and cod in the spring and winter and a hake terrain in March. This minn kota maxxum place is about 3 or 4 miles square and is bounded on all but the american side by muddy underside, which is of little value as a minn kota maxxum floor. Usually there exists good haddocking in Mar on the outside of Jeffreys, on its southeastern edge as well as in the cove between it and Tillies in 60 and 70 fathom depths over a broken and muddy underside. This location lies SE ? from the Isle of Shoals, 27 a long way to the middle.

[Dinner table 3--Outside Fishing Grounds, showing the principle varieties taken on them.]

John Dyers Ridge. This is 14 mls S. by E. from Toothakers Ridge, 40 miles S. by E. from Monhegan Tropical isle, and 7 miles NE. from Cashes Bank. It really is about 5 miles very long by 2 miles vast, lying inside an ENE. and WSW. path. The water is shoalest in the western benefit, where are from 45 to 50 fathoms over a distinct, pebbly base; thence the soil slopes to the NE. into 75 and 80 fathoms over a hard, gravelly, and muddy bottom, in every other instructions falling off sharply to 90 and 100 fathom soundings over a muddy bottom.

This really is essentially a cod ground for the entire calendar year, the types being most abundant from May 1 to December. It is a cusk ground all of the year in the hard base of the greater April, parts and March showing the most important schools. Hake also are numerous in 70 fathoms and deeper about the mud in summer and fall.

On the ledgecod and haddock, and cusk are consumed in the full winter months and early springwinter months, perhaps and spring decorating the best minn kota maxxum. In addition there are more or less pollock, and hake constitute a significant part of the get. In all those seasons when herring make their appearance in these waters the seiners make good grabs here, generally of foods fish, as the huge herring are termed with the trade. The mackerel, also, appear on these grounds as well as on the smaller reasons nearer to shore to westward and northward in good-sized schools, usually from July 1 through Sept. For many years the haddock get from this bank has been of considerable significance, and this document remains true for the past several years as well.

Harvey Blacks Ridge. This is SE. ? S. from the lightship off Portland, distant 42 miles, and SE. from New Ledge, distant 8 miles. From Glovers Rock, off Small Point, Me. this ridge lies SE. by S. ? S. 41 miles. It extends in a ENE. and WSW. path about 4 miles very long by I mile large. Depths typical 70 to 100 fathoms over a bottom part of yellow gravel and clay-based. Cod are taken here all the season. Haddock are found in the serious water early in the year: cusk all of the year in deep drinking water, together with hake in summer, also about the muddy bottom part in deeply water. Pollock and other area-education and learning minn kota maxxum are found within their suitable season.

A comparatively hidden and evidently as nevertheless unnamed ridge lies E. by S. 15 kilometers from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, that is reported to be excellent minn kota maxxum ground, specifically for cod and cusk. With both types present here the year all around, the cod is said to be most abundant in April and May: as well as the cusk, as is the rule on these outlying ridges, appears in largest amounts in April and March. Haddock seem to be considerably rare here.

On and about each one of these shoals the sail fleet makes very good catches, mainly consisting of cod but with a reasonable proportion of pollock, also, and in the deeper water close to them, in summer and spring, a considerable amount of haddock. An occasional huge halibut is taken, and even good catches have been noted. There were observed in the daily report of the Boston Minn Kota Maxxum Bureau between May 15 and August15 and 1920, 10 trips made by the smaller vessels of the halibut fleet that landed fares of from 2,000 to ten thousand pounds on this species using this area. Possibly more will be taken in case the halibut fishery were to be followed in this article as in other places. "Rip minn kota maxxum," as performed here, is performed "with a drift," moving over the shoals and, as they shift off from their website, sailing to repeat the process. The minn kota maxxum are considered by hand-lining with "cockle" lure or by "jigging" the fish with a gleaming piece of metal representing a herring or similar minn kota maxxum, under which are set up twin hooks, the fish getting struck when it is felt investigating the appeal. This fishery generally is carried on in the course of May, July and June and August. In the herring and mackerel conditions these grounds usually supply good minn kota maxxum for these particular species, the minn kota maxxum usually stunning here from May 15 to July 15.

Another big ridge, paralleling the 100-fathom curve of Georges Banking institution at about 20 mls N. than it, lies SE by S from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, forty miles to the center; SE by S 110 mls from Portland Lightship; ESE 92 a long way from Cape Ann to the western finish, and E. by S. ? S. through the ship at Boston 100 miles. This ridge also is of relatively indefinite place, being perhaps 20 miles long in an ESE by WNW path by 1? to three miles wide. Obviously depths are fairly standard from 85 to 95 fathoms, the bottom of the ridge being of coarse black sand and getting blue soil in the deeper area around it. This is reported to be a good cod and cusk ground the entire year round.

A ridge lying NW. of Cashes Lender and almost parallel with the main lender, only separated by a thin deep station, is about 7 miles long by 1? miles broad. The varieties and the seasons are the same on this page as on Cashes Bank.

Platt's Financial institution or New Ledge. This bears E. by N. ? N. from Thacher Island, from which the shoal portion of the ledge is distant 53 miles. From Portland Lightship it is 30 miles SSE. to the centre of the ground. The lender is about 12 miles lengthy, NE. and SW.. and approximately 8 a long way wide. The western shoal, which is of small level and difficult and which includes a considerable amount of deceased shells upon it, is situated near the center, its range being 29 fathoms. Using this shoal towards the Southwest Maximum is about 11 miles SW. by S. Another shoal lies E. 3 miles, having about 30 fathoms over beach sand and pea gravel, which is a great fall soil for haddock. East-northeast from the western shoal 3 kilometers brings us to a difficult ridge, with spots of hard dirt and pebbles between, in 65-fathom degree, which is a fine winter cusk ground, these minn kota maxxum remaining here until April. Over a lot of the bank the depths range from 30 to 35 fathoms with a underside of gravel and rocks. From your edge of the shoaler region the bottom slopes gradually to 50 or 60 fathoms, beyond which it declines suddenly to 80 or 90 fathoms over a dirty bottom.

Stellwagen Banking institution also called Middle Bank. This separates Massachusetts Bay from the open water of the Gulf of Maine and runs from around Cape Ann nearly to Cape Cod. The center of this ground bears S by E ? E from Thacher N and Tropical island by W ? W from Highland Light, Cape Cod. The Southern Part of the Banking institution is faraway 5? kilometers from Competition Point Cape Cod, as well as its northwest prong reaches to within 12 or 15 miles of Eastern Position Cape Cod. The shoaler portion, with depths from 9? to 19 fathoms, is 17? miles lengthy in a N by W and S by E path and has a width of 4 mls. This part is sandy but the eastern slope, in depths of from 25 to 55 fathoms, is made up of coarse yellow sand gravel and pebbles. On this gravelly slope haddock and cod have been taken plentifully over a long term of several years, the cod in the tumble and early spring and the haddock in the winter months. On the southern stop of the lender and involving this and Race Position cod are plentiful in slip and wintertime. The entire bank is another mackerel soil when the seafood have been in these oceans, the best inside the season averaging to be from July 15 through Sept ..

Fippenies Bank. This consists of two shoals averaging 80 fathoms in depth having a channel of 90 fathoms between them. These run NE. and SW., the eastern shoal about 8 kilometers long by 1 mile wide, the western about half as sizeable. Fippenies bears E. 1/4 S. from Thacher Isle, distant 61 miles; from Portland Lightship, SE. by S. ? S, 57 miles to the western point of the northern shoal in 35 fathoms. The bank is nearly 10 miles long NE. and SW. and averages 4? miles broad. The bottom is ofgravel and pebbles, and clay, having depths over much of the shoal of about 30 fathoms but also from 36 to 60 fathoms. It is fished by the shoreline fleet in the spring and very early summer. The fish and months are as on Cashes Bank. Previously twice as numerous haddock were actually taken on this page as on Cashes or on Platts Bank, but this has modified in recent years. Halibut are used here in fair numbers in 45 to 55 fathom depths inJune and July, and August on the "black gravel" from the southern and western edge. The "white colored gravel" on the northern shoal is of tiny account like a minn kota maxxum ground, as it is composed mainly of the seashells of deceased scallops.

GEORGES Region

Maurice Lubee's Soil. This is situated outside of New Ledge (Platts Bank) 47 miles SSE. from the lightship at Portland. Extending in an ENE. and WSW. course, its boundaries are somewhat indefinite. It really is perhaps 8 miles extended by 3 miles broad and has depths from 95 to 110 fathoms across a bottom consisting mostly of mud.

Jerry Yorks Ridge. This lies just inside and paralleling Jeffreys Ledge WNW. from its shoal water and about 5 mls distant from the ledge and about 18 miles SE. by S. ? S. from Cape Porpoise. This ground has from 45 to 48 fathoms water on a difficult broken underside. It is about 5 miles long, NNE. and SSW., and averages 1? kilometers wide. This is a good haddock and cod ground Within the fall or higher to January, these sea food returning here in the spring months.
