The incisive foramina are long and narrow surpassing posteriorly the
Parent and alkyl PAH concentrations in both sediments and clams on Hospital beach decrease from north to south (along tidal isopleths) with distance from the pitch and coke unloading area and from west to east (across the tidal isopleths) with decreasing tide height, while the vascular plant terpenes and PAHs exhibit less change with tide height and little or no relation with location on the beach (Fig. 2c, d; Table A1). The parent PAH concentration decrease with tide height on Hospital beach (Fig. 2c, Table A1) is consistent with pitch as the major source, since pitch dust has been generated during unloading and handling of solid pitch, and that PD184352 winds and tidal activity promote the resuspension of fine, low density particles, causing preferential deposition in the high intertidal zone (Maruya et al., 1996 and Young et al., 1985). The smaller decrease in 1999 parent PAH concentrations from the north to middle transects (KAI to KAII) than from the middle to south transects (KAII to KAIII; average 21% and 46%, respectively) also is consistent with the major component of the parent PAHs being in a form that is influenced by tidal sorting (Table A1). However, the transect order is reversed for the alkyl PAHs (56% and 28%; Fig. 2c; Table A1), consistent with multiple PAH sources with different compositions and, very likely, matrix associations (Alexander, 2000, Breedveld et al., 2007 and Cornelissen et al., 2006), where at least a portion of the alkyl PAHs must be largely independent of tidal influences. The 1999 and 2000 concentrations for the three transects also decrease markedly in order of the 2.0, 1.8 and 1.7 m tide heights, with parent PAHs exhibiting both a larger decrease than alkyl PAHs and more of a decrease with tide height than with distance from the loading area (Fig. 2c, d; Table A1). The parent PAH concentration decrease is smaller between the 2.0 and 1.8 m tide heights than between the 1.8 and 1.7 m heights (average 51% and 74%, respectively), while alkyl PAHs show a smaller concentration decrease overall with less difference between tide height segments (33% and 31%).
