Based on the LC50 values, three sub-lethal concentrations of lindane (0.001 mg/L, 0.002 mg/L, and 0.005 mg/L) were added to each experimental tank. One tank was maintained as Beta-Sheet Breaker control and one was a solvent control. Replicates were run for each concentration. The medium was renewed every 24 h.
Five fishes of both sexes were released into 5 L of water in each tank to study unusual behaviors during exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of lindane. The altered behavior of the fish was monitored at regular intervals. All of the fishes were monitored for mortality and changes in behavior, as described by Henry and Atchinson (1986).
The fishes were caught and blood was collected in small vials by puncturing the caudal peduncle for hematological studies. Blood was treated with EDTA to prevent coagulation. The different hematological analyses were performed using standard techniques. RBC counts were performed with a genome Neubauer Chamber as described by Davidsohn and Henry (1969). WBCs were counted according to the method described by Donald Hunter and Bomford (196 cool . Hemoglobin was determined using Sahli’s hemoglobinometer. The hematocrit was determined using Wintrobe’s method (1977) (Wintrobe, 1977). Erythrocyte indices were calculated using the formula provided by Dacie and Lewis (1975).
