Uruguay Soccer Team
The Uruguay soccer team is the representative of Uruguay in international competitions like the FIFA World Cup, the Olympics, and the Copa America. They are governed by the Uruguayan Football Association. The team is also known as La Celeste or The Sky Blue. They were ranked Number Two in FIFA’s world ranking of football teams in June of 2012, but is currently at Number 17 today.

Their head coach is Oscar Tabaras and the team is captained by Diego Lugano. Their home stadium is the Estadio Centenaro in Montevideo. They are considered to be one of the national teams with the most titles and is the smallest country to have won a FIFA World Cup.

Uruguay was colonized by European countries and one of the things that the colonizers brought to the small country was football. On May 16, 1901, the very first international game outside the United Kingdom was played in Uruguay, in a victorious match against Argentina. In 1916, the first South American Championships was competed by Uruguay, in which they won the title, beating Chile in a 4-0 win. By 1924, Uruguay had established itself as a dominant global force in football when they won that year’s gold during the Summer Olympics. In 1928, they defended their Olympic gold by bagging the same honor. It was an easy decision for FIFA to hold the first ever World Cup in 1930 in the country–which the national team also won.

Although much of Uruguay’s greatest international football achievements happened from 1924-1950, they are still considered to be a contender in international matches. They have won a total of 15 Copa America titles.

Uruguayan football playing style is a unique kind of football due to the different styles brought by their colonizers paired with local playing styles. Their high level of play revolves around short passes and attacking play.

Famous Uruguayan football players include Jose Leandro Andrade, who is believed to be the first every real international football star, Diego Forlan, and Uruguay’s best footballer today, Edinson Cavani.
