Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 08
Big Ridge (near Cashes Bank). This really is a broken and rocky component of bottom working from the tip of the southeastern part of the floor, at about 10 mls S. from the buoy on Ammens Rock and roll and about 82 miles SE. ? S. from your lightship at Portland, to a degree about 20 miles S. by E. from the buoy named. Its length is not really to be mentioned definitely, in fact it is probably in excess of here displayed. The size averages about 1? to 2 miles. Depths are from 65 to 80 fathoms and more, increasing gradually mainly because it goes outside the main banking institution. The varieties and their seasons of large quantity here are as on Cashes Bank. Probably this is a greater portion of a cod and cusk ground than is the major part of Cashes Bank, the cusk being particularly abundant during March and Apr. Halibut are found in June and May in from 50 to 60 fathoms of water. A considerable amount of the fish shown in the table of the catch through the area included in Cashes Banking institution may well have come using this piece of floor.

On the ledgecod and haddock, and cusk are consumed in the full spring and winterperhaps, spring and winter furnishing the best sportfishing. There are more or less pollock, and hake constitute a significant part of the find. In all those seasons when herring make their appearance in these waters the seiners make good catches here, largely of food fish, as the huge herring are termed by the trade. The mackerel, also, appear on these grounds and on the smaller reasons nearer to shore to northward and westward in good-sized colleges, usually from July 1 through Sept. For many years the haddock get from this bank has been of considerable significance, and this document remains true for the past several years as well.

Off N and Newburyport. and SW. of the Isle of Shoals are gill-netting reasons that are significantly used. Trawling and netting are maintained, beginning in 40 fathoms in February and March and working away and off to 70 fathoms off Salisbury Bench in May. Cod are on this ground about two weeks in October and then in March and Feb are found in abundance off Boars Mind. Hake exist here each of the fall and are found all along the southeast side of these grounds in depths of 45 to 60 fathoms. A certain amount of halibut may be consumed in most many years at different points over a bottom of hard pea gravel in springtime and early summer in 35 to 65 fathoms. In most years a large amount of mackerel is taken on Jeffreys, notably so in 1925. Herring, also, are generally abundant in "herring years".

Tobins. A name provided to a piece of soil about 20 miles rectangular lying S. by E. from the Highland Light. It runs from about 40 miles to about 60 miles offshore, the depths progressively increasing since the bottom ski slopes away uniformly from the shore from 75 to 95 fathoms over a bottom of clay, fine sand, and pebbles. Cod are taken in thespring and summer, and fall, and haddock inFebruary and March, and Apr. As compared with the reasons off Chatham, this is not that need considering a hake ground, though a few hake are undertaken here in summer time.

Outer Crab Ledge. The center lies about 14 miles ESE from Chatham Lights. It extends about 5 or 6 a long way in a N. and S. direction and is about 1 mile wide. Depths run from 19 to 23 fathoms; the base is rocky. The minn kota maxxum is principally for cod in the spring, drop and winter season. Vessel minn kota maxxum is principally early in the year.

The Cod Ridge (formerly External Harris Floor). This is situated NE. from your Northeast Peak of New Ledge, distant 7 miles. It extends inside an ENE. and WSW. course, the ground narrowing and the water deepening towards the eastward, the shoal terrain having 45 fathoms over a bottom of small pebbles and okay black sand and gravel, depths increasing in all other recommendations to 100 fathoms in the mud and sloping off of somewhat steeply, especially on the southeast aspect, where the decline is very distinct. The length of the ground is about 5 miles, the width 1 mile. It is really an all-the-year cod ground, the season of greatest abundance being from May 1 to November. The haddock are usually Within their greatest figures here from January 1 to April. Maybe because the h2o is not strong enough for your former, apart from the small minn kota maxxum, that happen to be of small value to the fishermen; along with the ground will not be muddy adequate for the latter species, evidently no great number of cusk or hake are taken here on the ridge. Both types, however, can be found about the corners in the serious water, the cusk about the sharpest, toughest part of the bottom part (perhaps most popular in Feb . and Mar), the hake, as usual, on the muddy elements about it.

A comparatively little known and evidently as but unnamed ridge lies E. by S. 15 miles from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, which happens to be reported to be excellent fishing ground, specifically for cod and cusk. With both varieties present here the year close to, the cod is reported to be most numerous in Apr and May: and the cusk, as is the guideline on these outlying ridges, appears in largest phone numbers in April and March. Haddock seem to be relatively rare here.

Lying about SE. by S. ? 5. from the Isle of Shoals 20 miles, 13 mls S. by W. from your whistling buoy on Jeffreys, and 43 miles S. by W. from Cape Elizabeth is a broken part of bottom getting from 75 to 85 fathoms of water over it, which is a haddock ground from January to April plus a cusk and hake ground all the year.

Platt's Bank or New Ledge. This bears E. by N. ? N. from Thacher Tropical isle, from which the shoal portion of the ledge is distant 53 miles. From Portland Lightship it is 30 miles SSE. to the center of the ground. The lender is about 12 miles lengthy, NE. and SW.. and about 8 kilometers wide. The western shoal, which is of small degree and rocky and which includes a considerable amount of old shells upon it, is located near the center, its depth being 29 fathoms. Using this shoal for the Southwest Peak is about 11 miles SW. by S. Another shoal lies E. 3 mls, having about 30 fathoms over yellow sand and gravel, which is a good fall ground for haddock. East-northeast through the western shoal 3 miles brings us to a difficult ridge, with spots of hard soil and pebbles between, in 65-fathom degree, which is a good winter cusk ground, these minn kota maxxum remaining in this article until Apr. Over a great deal of the bank the depths range between 30 to 35 fathoms with a bottom of rocks and pea gravel. Through the edge of the shoaler place the bottom slopes gradually to 50 or 60 fathoms, beyond which it falls suddenly to 80 or 90 fathoms over a muddy bottom.

On and about all these shoals the sail fleet makes great catches, generally consisting of cod but with a decent proportion of pollock, also, and in the deeper h2o close to them, in spring and summer, a considerable amount of haddock. An occasional sizeable halibut is taken, and in many cases good attracts have been noted. There were noted in the every day report of the Boston Minn Kota Maxxum Bureau between May 15 and August15 and 1920, 10 trips made by the smaller vessels of the halibut fleet that landed fares of from 2,000 to 10,000 pounds of this species with this area. Maybe more can be taken if the halibut fishery were to be followed here as in other locations. "Rip minn kota maxxum," as carried out here, is done "with a drift," moving over the shoals and, as they move off from them, sailing returning to repeat the process. The fish are undertaken by hand-lining with "cockle" bait or by "jigging" the minn kota maxxum with a gleaming piece of metallic representing a herring or similar minn kota maxxum, below which are set twin hooks, the seafood being struck after it is felt looking into the appeal. This fishery generally is carried on during May, June and July and August. In the mackerel and herring seasons these reasons usually supply good angling for these particular species, the fish usually hitting here from May 15 to July 15.

Fifty-five Fathom Bunch. To the west of Cashes Bank is really a rocky ridge extending ENE. and WSW. about 4 miles and having a breadth of about 1 mile. This is mainly a cod soil, the conditions for the kinds being as on Cashes Bank.

A little shoal inside the western portion of the Cove of Jeffreys, having 50 fathoms over a base of glowing blue clay and rocks and rising from the 70 and 60 fathom soundings about it, is all about 1? kilometers long by about 3/4 mile large. This shoal is SSE. from Benefit Island 15 miles. It is a winter terrain for cod and haddock.

Eastern Shoal Water of Cape Ann. This is normally considered an element of Jeffreys and is often spoken of as West Jeffreys by the anglers. It stretches In an ENE. direction from Cape Ann for a distance of from 15 to 18 mls. It is, actually, a southwest continuation of Jeffreys Ledge, the two forming a nearly continuous ridge running NE. from Cape Ann a distance of about 42 kilometers. Depths around the so-called Eastern Shoal H2o vary from 20 to 45 fathoms, the bottom being of rocks, pebbles, and coarse gravel around most of its extent. mud and Sand happen on the sides. The eastern part of the terrain is resorted to through the haddock fleet during the slip and early on winter, along with other parts are visited essentially during the entire year forhaddock and cod, and pollock by boats and vessels from Cape Ann and by create of various sorts from Portland and Boston-line trawlers, gill-netters, and a few of the new type of modest otter trawlers, this latter fleet of craft constantly expanding in number.

A small cove makes for a short distance in to the western side of Jeffreys Ledge at about 20 miles from Boon Isle in a SE. by S. ? S. direction. The bottom in the cove is broken and muddy, with depths around 60 fathoms. Thence, the ground slopes away to the oral cavity, where the corners about the entry are difficult and have 75 and 70 fathom depths. These rocky regions are cusk grounds inJanuary and February, and Mar, during which several weeks the cove itself usually furnishes excellent haddock minn kota maxxum. Outside these depths the water deepens westward more than minn kota maxxum 55 a muddy bottom part, where come from 80 to 90 and also 100 fathoms of water. Minn Kota Maxxum this is mainly by trawl and gill nets.

Jeffreys Ledge bears S. ? W. from the lightship off Portland, 19 mls to the north edge and 22 mls S. through the buoy about the Hue and Cry to the fringe of the shoal.

Wild Feline Ridge. Quite heavy tides sweep around this terrain, making it challenging to haul gear in minn kota maxxum with it, whence, it is said, comes the name. It is placed NNE from Highland Gentle, Cape Cod, 18 a long way to its the southern part of edge; SE ? S from Thacher Isle 31 mls; and is about 7? kilometers long inside a north and south direction by about 3? miles broad. The bottom is difficult, of shattered shells and sand, and depths are from 45 to 60 fathoms. There are 100 fathom depths inside of the floor and from 100 to 110 fathoms outside of it. Apparently, this is an all the year ground for cod, cusk, and haddock, although but little fished at any time besides the winter conditions.

John Dyers Ridge. This is 14 kilometers S. by E. from Toothakers Ridge, 40 miles S. by E. from Monhegan Tropical island, and 7 miles NE. from Cashes Bank. It is actually about 5 miles lengthy by 2 miles wide, lying inside an ENE. and WSW. route. The water is shoalest about the western benefit, where come from 45 to 50 fathoms over a distinct, pebbly underside; thence the ground slopes on the NE. into 75 and 80 fathoms across a hard, gravelly, and dirty bottom, in all other instructions falling off sharply to 90 and 100 fathom soundings over a muddy bottom.

GEORGES Region

Fippenies Bank. This consists of two shoals averaging 80 fathoms in depth by using a channel of 90 fathoms between them. These run NE. and SW., the eastern shoal about 8 kilometers long by 1 mile wide, the western about 50 % as big. Fippenies bears E. 1/4 S. from Thacher Island, distant 61 miles; from Portland Lightship, SE. by S. ? S, 57 miles to the european point of the northern shoal in 35 fathoms. The lender is nearly 10 miles extended NE. and SW. and averages 4? miles broad. The bottom is ofpebbles and gravel, and clay, having depths above much of the shoal around 30 fathoms but also from 36 to 60 fathoms. It is fished by the shoreline fleet in the spring and very early summer. The minn kota maxxum and seasons are as on Cashes Bank. Earlier twice as a lot of haddock were taken on this page as on Cashes or on Platts Bank, but this has changed in recent years. Halibut are used here in reasonable numbers in 45 to 55 fathom depths inJuly and June, and August on the "black gravel" from the southern and western edge. The "white gravel" on the to the north shoal is of very little account as a fishing ground, as it is composed largely of the seashells of deceased scallops.

Southeast Jeffreys. Off the southeast edge of Jeffreys, about 24 miles SE. from Benefit Island, is a piece of angling soil having a tough bottom ofsand and gravel, and rocks, where depths slope aside gradually from your 50-fathom soundings near the main body in the bank on the 90-fathom label farther out. This area is a good ground for haddock and cod in the winter months and spring season plus a hake soil in Mar. This fishing place is about 3 or 4 miles sq and is bounded on all but the european side by muddy base, which is of little worth as a minn kota maxxum terrain. Usually there exists good haddocking in March on the outside of Jeffreys, on its southeastern edge as well as in the cove between it and Tillies in 60 and 70 fathom depths over a broken and muddy underside. This location lies SE ? from the Isle of Shoals, 27 kilometers to the middle.

Howard Nunans Ridge. Of similar character to the previous, this rises 4 mls inside of and parallel on it, lying 14 miles from Cape Porpoise on the same bearings (SE. by S. ? S.). This looks to be made up of two shoals, the northern increasing to 50 fathoms of water over a difficult, broken bottom part about 3 miles very long by 1 mile broad, deepening southwesterly to a slim, muddy gully, where are 80 fathoms, and increasing again to 60 fathoms over rocks and broken ground. The complete ground is all about 8 miles long with average widths of from 1 to 1? a long way. This ground furnishes great cod minn kota maxxum and haddocking within the fall and early winter months and yet again in the spring a few months.

Cusk are plentiful in this article in the spring, with just a few in the tumble. Cod are taken all the year close to, the Spring season school getting the largest. Hake are most numerous Inside the tumble and early spring months, and haddock usually are not common however are most numerous in winter.

[Footnote 13: We have seen some supposition as to the source of the somewhat unusual brand of this lender. The writer would note that there seemed to be an Edward Tillie within the Company of Captain John Smith when he explored this region in 1614 along with a Tilly (possibly the same individual) who controlled a minn kota maxxum station at Cape Ann in the years 1625 and 1624.]

This is certainly essentially a cod terrain for the entire calendar year, the kinds being most abundant from May 1 to December. It is a cusk ground all of the year in the hard base of the deeper April, elements and March showing the most important schools. Hake also are abundant in 70 fathoms and deeper around the mud in slip and summertime.

This bank is now primarily an Italian boat soil and is used by small create from Gloucester and Boston. Gill-netting here is particularly extensive in Dec and Nov, mostly for pollock. Netters operate about 22 miles SSE. from Eastern Point in 22 to 25 fathoms on a difficult bottom. Excellent pollock attracts are made in 25 to 40 fathoms on the eastern and southeastern slopes from the latter a part of November and early Dec. Haddock are here from November 1 to Mar 1 and from Apr 20 to May 15. Cod can be found all the calendar year, the largest institution occurring in the course of August, October and September. It really is a cusk soil from December to Mar in the deeper water. What seems a somewhat unusual occurrence in these later several years was the look of a considerable college of halibut on the upper slope of Stellwagen during the last half of April 1926, numerous small craft getting from 2,000 to 3,000 weight in their fares.

3-Dory Ridge. Away from New Ledge and about midway between it and Harvey Blacks Ridge is a tiny ridge about 3 mls long, jogging NE. and SW., and approximately ? mile vast. This is SE. by S. from the Portland Lightship. 38 kilometers to the shoal of 55 fathoms, which happens to be near its center. From this the ground ski slopes away on all sides to 63 and 65 fathom depths over which area the bottom is made up of dirt, gravel and sand and rocks. At these decrease depths are normally found "piping" (clay-based cylinders), where the minn kota maxxum ends abruptly. All about the ridge are depths of 80 to 100 fathoms on the bottom of mud. This is almost completely a cod ground, good from Could to August.

Seemingly the great quantity of cod on this ground is due to the truly amazing quantity of shrimps and delicate-shelled crabs located on the muddy bottom part and on the rocks that compose this ground. There seem to be most of these deep-water grounds about and between the shoaler grounds, as near Cashes, Fippenies, and Jeffreys, which apparently serve as fairways over that the schools of hake, cod, and cusk, move from Georges Bank into the Gulf of Maine in the spring of the season.

Harvey Blacks Ridge. This is certainly SE. ? S. from the lightship off Portland, distant 42 miles, and SE. from New Ledge, distant 8 miles. From Glovers Rock and roll, off Small Point, Me. this ridge lies SE. by S. ? S. 41 miles. It extends in an ENE. and WSW. direction about 4 miles extended by I mile large. Depths common 70 to 100 fathoms over a base of yellow-colored clay and gravel. Cod are taken in this article all the calendar year. Haddock are found in the serious water early in the year: cusk all the year in deep drinking water, together with hake in summer season, also about the muddy bottom in deeply water. Pollock and other surface-schools fish are found within their suitable season.

Tillies Bank. [13] This bears E And S from Eastern Level Light just dropping Thacher Island Gentle, then 3 miles further for best sport fishing: and E. by S. ? S. from Thacher Island, Cape Ann, that the shoal on the centre of the ground is distant 18 miles. It is a small difficult spot with depths of from 25 to 28 fathoms, beyond which the water deepens to 40 fathoms over a considerable area. The duration of the entire floor is about 10 miles inside an E. and W. route and the size about 5 miles. Prior to reaching the mud at still higher depths but an area of shoal normal water connects this ground with West Jeffreys, at the side it drops off rapidly to depths of 50 to 60 fathoms. The base is rocky and hard across the greater portion of the bank. Tillies was formerly regarded as among the best sport fishing grounds off Cape Ann and is also still resorted to for haddock and cod in the early spring and tumble; for hake in thesummer and early spring, and slip, and for pollock in the springtime and drop. The minn kota maxxum is mainly by trawling, with the gillnetters operating on the shoal grounds in under 50 fathoms.

This shoreline furnishes superb mackerel minn kota maxxum while in most of the time of year when these fish are in upper waters. Almost no gill-netters operate here, the distance to market becoming great and the chance of hard weather and the lack of safe harbor so that it is dangerous for small art. From this extend of shoreline (mostly from off Chatham) there were landed at Boston in the year 1923, 66 fares with a full of 1,797,826 pounds valued at $76,875.

This ridge lies in a SE. and NW. course, extending fairly indefinitely but for at least 10 miles by about 3 miles in width. About the ridge the bottom is cracked--a hard bottom of black colored gravel, which normally means a great fishing. spot--the depths here being from 85 to 90 fathoms. There are numerous muddy spots between these more challenging pieces of floor where soundings run to 100 fathoms or slightly more. The nearby bottom is mostly of dirt, and the depths average from 100 to 125 fathoms. There are a number of pieces of gravelly hard soil in the location, each of which probably would furnish similarly good sportfishing for cod and cusk in the same seasons as about the ridge.

Another major ridge, paralleling the 100-fathom curve of Georges Bank at about 20 kilometers N. than it, lies SE by S from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, forty miles to its center; SE by S 110 mls from Portland Lightship; ESE 92 a long way from Cape Ann to the western stop, and E. by S. ? S. from your ship at Boston 100 miles. This ridge is also of considerably indefinite area, being possibly 20 a long way long in an ESE by WNW course by 1? to three mls wide. Obviously depths are fairly consistent from 85 to 95 fathoms, the foot of the ridge being of coarse black sand and achieving blue mud in the further area around it. This is reported to be a good cod and cusk ground the season round.

Expected E. through the buoy on Ammens Rock and roll about 12 miles is a ridge that goes up from the 100 to 120 fathom depths about it to some depth of approximately 80 fathoms over a base of shatteredmud and soil, and seashells. This shoaler piece is a few 3 miles long. N. by E. and S. by NW., by 1 mile vast. It furnishes good fishing for cod, hake, and cusk in the spring, Apr being the very best season.

Morris Ledge. This is placed eastward of Chatham and is a favorite soil for certain cod fishermen during spring and early summer time. Schooners and small art operate on this page.

Stellwagen Financial institution also called Center Bank. This separates Massachusetts Bay from the open water of the Gulf of Maine and expands from near Cape Ann nearly to Cape Cod. The center of this ground bears S by E ? E from Thacher Island and N by W ? W from Highland Light-weight, Cape Cod. The The southern area of Part of the Lender is remote 5? mls from Race Point Cape Cod, and its particular northwest prong reaches to within 12 or 15 miles of Eastern Level Cape Cod. The shoaler portion, with depths from 9? to 19 fathoms, is 17? miles very long in a N by W and S by E route and has a width of 4 miles. This portion is soft sandy but the eastern slope, in depths of from 25 to 55 fathoms, is made up of coarse beach sand gravel and pebbles. On this gravelly slope cod and haddock happen to be taken plentifully over a long term of years, the cod in the fall and spring season and the haddock in the winter months. Around the southern end of the lender and involving this and Race Stage cod abound in fall and winter. The whole bank is yet another mackerel ground when the fish happen to be in these waters, the best from the season averaging to be from July 15 through Sept ..

East area of Cape Cod. The sea bottom off the east side of Cape Cod is mainly sandy and slopes off gradually from the beach, reaching depths of 30 to 40 fathoms at 5 to 7 miles from land. Beneath Chatham the slope is even more gradual. Within these limits very good catches of cod are taken at times, and to a less extent the same is true of haddock. Farther away from the shore, in from 40 to 80 fathoms and from the point 8 or 10 miles away from the Highlands of Cape Cod to another stage lying 20 miles or even more SSE. from Chatham Lamps, is a ongoing stretch of excellent haddock grounds for winter minn kota maxxum. The deep normal water off Chatham furnishes excellent hake minn kota maxxum in summer and fall.

Nantucket Shoals. This extend of cafes and deeper waters in between, roughly triangular in form with its apex at the to the north, lies over the western edge of the South Channel, increasing S. and SE. through the southern finish of Cape Cod and Nantucket Island. From Monomoy Denote Rogers Minn Kota Maxxum Soil, on the eastern edge of Phelps Bank, it is SSE. 80 miles. Its width from Southeast Rips to the european edge of New South Shoal is 40 miles. The spot includes numerous "angling spots" and shoals, among which the following are the main: Pollock Rip Rose, Crown and Terrain Shoal, Fantastic Rip, Davis Bank, Angling Rip, Old and New South Shoal, and Phelps Bank.

A ridge lying NW. of Cashes Lender and virtually parallel together with the main banking institution, only divided by a slim deep funnel, is about 7 miles extended by 1? miles large. The varieties and the seasons are the same here as on Cashes Bank.

Clay-based Ridge. At various factors about the corners of Jeffreys Ledge are small detached ridges, which in their year are good sportfishing grounds. The present piece of ground is 26 miles S. by W. from your lightship at Portland, which course and distance take us on the northern advantage. Elsewhere soundings average from 65 to 70 fathoms over a base of difficult clay, while there is a 50-fathom shoal of small size upon it. The length of the soil is about 4 miles NNE. and SSW., and the breadth about 1 mile. This furnishes excellent haddocking in January, Feb .. and Mar. the latter 30 days showing the most effective minn kota maxxum.

The Shoal Ground, stretches easterly from Thacher Tropical island, has depths from twenty to thirty fathoms spanning a bottom of gravel and fine sand. This area is around 15 kilometers long by 5 kilometers wide and is an important pollock ground with their spawning time as well as a great fall cod-fishing ground. It is about 12 miles E. by N. from Thacher Island to the center and 21 a long way SE. by S. in the Isle of Shoals. Flounder draggers also operate here on the shoal ground and all around Thacher Island but mostly to eastward & southeastward.

The gill-net fishery on these grounds is of great and steadily growing value, though earlier this fishery was almost entirely maintained by trawlers and hand-liners. Of late the greater part of the haddock catch continues to be taken from the "otter-trawl" strategy, this items being operated by steamers of considerable size and upon the greater number of distant reasons, such as Georges Bank, the South Route, and the American Bank. The identical change to fishing reasons farther offshore has to an incredible extent happened in the fleet of larger sailing vessels, as a result leaving Jeffreys and other inshore banks for the smaller create; except that, together with the high prices of haddock and cod in the wintertime, it is often profitable for these larger sized vessels to perform off to around-by banks first set and return to slot the same day.

[Dinner table 3--Exterior Fishing Grounds, demonstrating the principle kinds taken with them.]

Jeffreys Ledge. Of fairly small dimension, even though jeffreys Ledge could be considered one of the better minn kota maxxum grounds inside the Gulf of Maine. It appears to be an extension of the shoal terrain that makes away in an easterly direction from Cape Ann, it is about 20 a long way long in the NE. and SW. course and about 4 miles large. Its the southern part of limits is 42? 54' and its north limit 43? north latitude; its eastern and traditional western limitations may be placed at 69? 58' and 70? 18' to the west longitude. The bottom is rocky on the shoaler parts, with gravel and pebbles in the edges. Depths on the financial institution are from 27 to 35 fathoms, falling off to 40 or 50 on the edges. The shoalest water is from 4 to 5 miles N. by E. from the buoy, where there is 22 fathoms. Ordinarily there is very little or no tide, with an occasional current SW. There are actually, however, robust westerly currents with the large easterly wind, and often right after a period of minor weather without having strong tides there will all of a sudden develop a heavy SW. circulation, indicating the approach of the strong northwester. This would seem a general principle in the Gulf of Maine and is, perhaps, prevalent over much of our North Atlantic coast.

The haddock catch here has dropped off just recently, although this was considered one of the top fishing grounds for haddock and cod in the Gulf of Maine. Hake are very abundant during the summertime and often throughout October in the muddy bottom near the advantage. Inside 100 fathoms, on the "punkin" bottom of stones and gravel, near the dirt, haddock are normally found from December to Mar. Cod, pollock, and cusk occur from May to October, the first kind on the rocky and gravelly portions, the latter on the strong soundings, using the Northeast Peak the best summer season ground. This really is an specifically good slip and winter season ground for haddock. Halibut tend to be found in 35 fathoms (modest fish) from September through October; also In spring and early summer season. No gill netting of importance as yet, even though this ground is fished by vessels from Cape Cod, Mass., to Cutler, Me., mainly by trawling, some hand-lining.

Maurice Lubee's Soil. This is outside of New Ledge (Platts Bank) 47 miles SSE. from the lightship at Portland. Extending inside an ENE. and WSW. path, its boundaries are considerably indefinite. It is perhaps 8 miles long by 3 miles vast and has depths from 95 to 110 fathoms spanning a bottom consisting mostly of mud.

About the inner parts of this terrain, particularly, the gill-net fleet operates substantially, mainly from the full and spring, on northwest Jeffreys 8 to 12 miles E. and SE. from Thacher Tropical isle, where the bottom part is beach sand and stones. Other gill-netting grounds are 8 to 15 miles NE. by E. from Thacher Tropical island in 22 fathoms with a hard bottom part of mud and mixed material of sand and gravel. The Cove of Jeffreys, NE. by E. 12 to 15 miles from Thacher Tropical isle, is a favored haddock terrain in the spring (Apr 20 to May 15) in 45 to 70 or even 80 fathoms, despite the fact that gill nets are not usually fished in than 50 fathoms due to the, weight of the nets from the deeper water. In the spring (in May and April), the haddock are available in on Scantum, 10 mls NNE. from Thacher Tropical island between Jeffreys Ledge and the Isle of Shoals, with a broken bottom of stones and azure clay in 55 to 70 fathoms.

Jerry Yorks Ridge. This lies just inside and paralleling Jeffreys Ledge WNW. from its shoal water contributing to 5 mls distant in the ledge and approximately 18 miles SE. by S. ? S. from Cape Porpoise. This ground has from 45 to 48 fathoms of water on a rocky broken bottom. It is about 5 a long way long, NNE. and SSW., and averages 1? miles wide. This is an excellent cod and haddock ground In the fall and up to January, these seafood coming back here early in the year months.

Pollock Rip Grounds. These lay between Pollock Rip Lightship and Shovelful Lightship and expand northward to Pollock Rip Shoal. These grounds are 3 kilometers long, E. and W., by 2 miles N. and S. The depths range from 4 to 12 fathoms. These are generally fished from Monomoy and in stormy weather from Chatham instead of visiting the Crab Ledge. Late in the spring and at the start of the slip the cod move inshore. In winter the cod depart Pollock Rip for the much deeper water.

The Ridge (in the southern element of Fippenies). This really is SSE. from your light-ship at Portland 75 miles and possesses a base of yellowish mud and pebblespebbles and depths of 75 to 95 fathoms. Cod are present in December and January; cusk the season around, but most numerous in February and March; haddock in January and December; hake in Sept . and October. The length of this bank is from 4 to 5 miles and the width somewhat under 2 kilometers. It is in an ENE. and WSW. direction.
