I put my headphones on and started listening to my favorite song. Finn finally got into the car and we drove off. When we got to school, Harley let us out and drove off to go park the car. Finn and Toru went inside while I waited on the front steps for Harley. We always walk together because we have the same homeroom, Mrs. Tilley. While we walked, Harley looked at me. When I looked back at him, he looked away. “Why’d you do it? Why kiss Mark when you had me? I just don’t get it.” He said angrily.
I observed his face. He was hurting. He was taking this breakup harder than I was and I realized that I couldn’t fix it. We were over. I began to cry. “Look, I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you. I was just wrapped up in the moment and I forgot everything. It was like a fairytale. After it happened, everything became real. And if it’s any constellation, I turned him down when he asked me out. Every time he asked me out, I said no. Even though, we weren’t dating. I’m really sorry Harley. I didn’t mean to hurt you like that. I knew he was your enemy. I just don’t know what came over me.” I sobbed. I wiped my eyes quickly because my makeup was running and I didn’t want anyone to see that I’d been crying.
We finally got to the door and I said, “I truly am really sorry, Harley.” His perfect green eyes stared into mine as if they were saying, it’s ok. We walked in and chose our seats. Harley sat between me and a girl named Denise. She was known around school as “Danny”. Mrs. Tilley sat at her desk patiently waiting for everyone to get settled. When everyone was quiet, she stood up and walked over to me. My heart felt like it was going to explode. When she got to where I was sitting, she bent over and whispered into my ear, “I hope you’ve learned your lesson. See me after class.” I could feel every eye in the room staring at me. She stood up straight and slowly went back to her desk. She told everyone to read a library book until the bell.
Twenty minutes after that, the bell rang. Everyone rushed to their locker to gossip about what happened. I stayed behind. Mrs. Tilley was standing in front of her desk waiting for me. “So, you want to go to college at Julliard? Well, I know of a competition that has a scholarship as grand prize for the first place winner. I thought you might be interested in it because it’s a dance competition. You have to have at least five people in your group and a name to enter.” She said. I was actually fairly surprised. I thought she was going to tell me that my consequences for vandalizing the cafeteria last Thursday weren’t over. I told her I’d think about it and let her write me a pass to my next class. “Good luck.” She said as I left.
