Back Story:
Bernadette Collins, for starters, is not her real name. She had no recollection of who her real parents were, or even her name. The island had some inhabitants, but all looked down upon her. The village locals claim that she might have been the sole daughter who survived the blazing destruction of the Wingates Manor, but none know for sure. The Wingates family had a history of greed that often led to feuds within the household. On a Sunday afternoon, smoke had filled the air in the town; the Wingates manor had gone up in smokes. However, because of their infamous reputation amongst the people, no one stood up to put out the flames. No one knows the cause of this flare or rather, no one cared how it happened.
One day, the renowned pirate Captain Bartholemew Collins makes his rounds at the island and finds her being bullied by the town pranksters as he's walking out of a bar. He breaks up the fight and tends to her wounds; they had been throwing rocks at her and left cuts on bruises on her arms and back. He takes the child in as his own and gives her the name, Bernadette. A name he had always wanted for a daughter if he were to have one. Little did this young seven year old know is that this man was the most wanted pirate and the Navy would be on their trail constantly. She definitely was in for the ride of her life.
Bartholemew began teaching Bernadette about the sea life. How to read maps, makes coordinates, manage food supply, whatever possible. She became the ship's favorite in less than a month for the crew always enjoyed her company. She was a joyful, innocent presence to be around. As she continues to grow, Captain Bartholemew would teach her how to defend herself; especially since she prepubescent. Bernadette was eleven when he had given Bernadette her first real weapon. It was a small dagger he had bought a few years back but never got around to using; it was perfect for the girl's age. As the days lingered on, Bartholemew would grow attached to Bernadette, loving her as if she were his real flesh and blood. He would grow older, his body sometimes failing him. There were times he would lay in bed all day with Bernadette at his side.
When Bernadette was sixteen, Captain Bartholemew had an outfit sewn for her in the hope that one day, she would assume his position as Captain. She refuses such a title; implying that she could never be as great as a leader as he. Of course, the Navy had other things to say about that. After all the raids and salvages, his bounty would climb and his face became extremely recognizable everywhere they went. He started sending Bernadette off on her own with the crew to get supplies for the ship whenever to let down the anchor at a port.
Life for changed dramatically when Bernadette was eighteen...
During a drinking pit stop on an island off the British mainland, Bartholemew takes a break at a local bar with Bernadette and some of his closest crew members. During this leisure time, he is provoked by other pirates who immediately identify him as the "most wanted pirate who ever lived." As an attempt to do so, one of them urges sexual intentions with Bernadette; offering her a good time in his quarters. This angers Bartholemew and a brawl ensues until it is broken up by other drinkers at the bar. These very men who had egged him on then make a proposal. If he were to defeat the kraken who lives North of the island and return alive, they would forever deem Captain Collins as invincible. His pride consumes him and he takes on the challenge taking not much obligation to Bernadette's concern. She pleads to her father how dangerous this mission would be yet he still wishes to persist.
During the battle with the kraken, Bernadette is taken captive by the sea monster. Bartholemew saves her by jamming his weapon into its tentacle, forcing it to let go. After two hours had gone by since the quarrel's start, he begins to realize they cannot win and must retreat. In desperation, he urges Bernadette that she must swim herself to safety and return onto the boat. Unfortunately, while she and the crew prompt the Captain to return on board, be warns them to turn back. Bartholemew had now, at this moment, passed on the title of Captain to Bernadette for she now wore his trademark feathered hat. She never wanted to leave her father behind, but they both knew someone had to stay behind as tribute to the monster. As they escape, Bernadette [as well as other crew members] watch in horror as the monster devours their late Captain Bartholemew.
Captain Bernadette, becomes fueled by anger. She grew a hatred for those men who had provoked her late father into a death trap. After the retreat, she returned to that same bar and murders the men as well as the witnesses. This causes a stir on the island and catches the attention of Navy men who were patrolling there. She grew obsessed with the memory of her father. It was then she forever vowed to take the life of anyone who spoke trash about Bartholemew Collins. The countless killings, followed by raids would make the price on her head skyrocket. She soon, was worth more than her own father when he was alive. Not only were the Navy tracking her, but assassins and bounty hunters as well. Anyone hungry for a quick way to earn large sums of cash was after her.
Ever since that day, no one on the ship dares mention the name, Bartholemew Collins. Not as a disservice, but as a way to avoid a trigger of disturbing images.
Soon she makes a fateful encounter with a man who went by the name as Rusty, a bounty hunter who had been sent to kill her. During his attempt to capture her, he falls unconscious. Bernadette grew worried for this man and decided to bring her on his ship; completely forgetting the fact he was sent to kill her. This man, soon becomes her trusted right-hand mate whom she would slowly grow feelings for but refuse to admit.
