A retelling of the Crunny incident
013 sighed as she slid into her chair and placed her clipboard back down onto her desk. One more glance over at the caged specimen on the examination table would have caused her more grief than necessary, so she forwent it and began leafing through her findings.
"It hasn't mutated in my presence yet, no matter what I did to it," she muttered to herself. "Still, I trust Miss Kuro's word. If she said it reproduced on its own, then I can't just discount that information."
The tech had been working on examining "Hazelnut," one of J-CORP's resident Crunnies, for some four-odd hours now after having spent all day conducting other research and overseeing the work of some of the newer techs. She'd found its DNA to be highly unstable, and so injected it with Chemical 1919, which slowed down its metabolism, stabilized some of its mutant genes, and caused the candy-coloured rabbit to become lethargic. Hopefully, "Hazelnut" would just fall asleep and cause her no more trouble.
Before she knew it, the exhausted 013 nodded off in her chair, and was awoken about an hour later by the sound of twisting metal. Jolting up in her seat, 013 gasped. The metal cage containing one Crunny, Hazelnut, had broken open--and at least forty more Crunnies surrounded her desk with their sharp yellow teeth bared. The damn rabbit had multiplied while she slept, and its many offspring looked wild...rabid, even.
"Damn it."
As quietly as possible, without making any sudden movements, she reached inside her desk for her pistol. Of course, she was going to draw attention to herself with the sound of gunshots--gunshots! The door needed to be barricaded. Unfortunately, 013's attempt at stealth was all for naught, as the Crunnies began their attack. The tech raced for the door and bolted it shut as the monstrous rabbits clawed and bit her, raking the flesh from her thin frame.
Gritting her teeth through the pain, 013 fired round after round, destroying as many of the abominations as she could, but their numbers kept on multiplying. There was no way she could afford to call for help; if the invasion kept up on this large scale, then the whole lab would have been attacked with the rest of the personnel inside, ready to become the Crunnies' lunch. She would rather be the one casualty of this incident than to be responsible for more than fifty others; sacrificing her own life for the good of J-CORP was good enough for her.
The largest Crunny offspring launched itself at her and sank its teeth into her side, creating a huge, gaping wound that leaked with blood. Staggering, 013 dropped her gun and fell into a barrel of water, which fell to the floor with a loud clang. Water flooded from the now-open barrel and covered the floor, and much to her surprise, the still-living Crunnies retreated. Any who were touched by the water disintegrated with an awful cry, leaving behind its remains: an orange puddle.
"That...would have made things so much easier..." the young scientist remarked to herself. She could start to feel her consciousness slipping, but she had another task at hand: destroying the others with water. Blood, Crunny remains, and water covered the floor of the lab when she was finished; to her knowledge, none of the rabbits survived. It was better off that way, she supposed. Now was her chance to find some help. She'd lost a lot of blood, and time was running out.
As a final precaution, she locked the examination room for the last time as she stumbled out into the main corridor, where she collapsed in a bloody heap...
