In Gotham City, 8 years after the manhunt for Batman, the city is at peace. Organized Crime has disappeared, and Bruce Wayne has retired from his job as Batman, and has become a recluse. In a party at Manor Manor celebrating the Dent Act and the clean city, he watches from his roof. Later, he meets a maid, Selina Kyle whom steals his mother's pearls, steals his fingerprints, and kidnaps a Congressmen. She later gives them to Phillip Stryver, an assistant to Bruce's business rival John Daggett.
Bruce searches for Selina on his supercomputer in the Batcave, which had been rebuilt and discuses with Alfred about his current condition and the way he's been living. John Blake, an orphan cop stops by and tells Bruce he knows who he was, and Tells him that some " details " might need help. He gets his leg checked, goes to a party where Selina is, and takes the pearls back, only to lose his car. At the same time, Miranda Tate urges him to restart the nuclear reactor project, which he shut down because he learned it could become a weapon. Later, Bane attacks the Gotham Stock Exchange and bankrupts Wayne Enterprises and Wayne. In response to this, Bruce puts back on the cape and cowl, and Batman returns to Gotham City, although being chased by the entire police force and barely escaping with Lucius Fox's new invention, a winged vehicle he calls " The Bat " .
At this point, Alfred, concerned for Bruce reveals he burned the letter Rachel gave him , which said that she would marry Harvey Dent, and not be with him. The result is Alfred resigning, doing so dissuade him. Bruce, concerned that Daggett would take over Wayne Enterprises, and thus the reactor, asks Miranda Tate to take over. Bruce promises the software Kyle needs to erase her criminal record, and later, Batman agrees to give it to her if she takes him to Bane, only to be betrayed. Bane and Batman fight, only for Bane to break Batman's back, and puts him in a foreign and ancient prison, where Bane reveals his intentions to destroy Gotham with the League of Shadows.
As Gotham burns, the inmates reveal the story of how Ra's al Ghul's child, whom was born in the prison escaped. Bruce assumes the child is Bane. A few months later, he recovers and trains, before escaping and returning to Gotham. He gets help from all his allies (except Alfred) to stop the bomb from detonating. As Batman, he frees the cops, before they clash with Bane's forces. Batman and Bane duel once more, but Tate stabs him in an act of betrayal. She reveals herself to be Talia al Ghul, and thus the child who escaped the Pit. She reveals her plans to finish her father's work and attempts to destroy Gotham, but Gordon blocks the signal and Talia goes to find the bomb. Kyle kills Bane, and the two of them track Talia. They knock her truck down, and make it crash, but she remotely destroys the reactor. With both villains dead, Batman takes the Bomb over the bay, where it explodes.
Batman is then presumed dead on the account of Bruce Wayne who in the first months of it all hadn't shown his face. Instead he moved on and vacationed with Selina eventually telling her he had to go back. She didn't like his decision and from there in Florence were the last they had saw of each other. Now Bruce has returned to Gotham only to be the recluse he had been before. Alfred shockingly returned as well to look over the Wayne's son as they had asked him too. The only promise was that Bruce would never be Batman again. However in the underlayerings of the city were men who were dressing up as the Batman but had guns. News reports had shown a lot and it prompted Batman to make one more cameo appearance with Alfred's approval.
Although, Alfred knew he could never keep the Batman at bay he hoped that Bruce at least tried to move on and not make this his life again. So when he went into the tunnels under Gotham he was surprised to see the men but still told them all to stop what they're doing in disgracing the name of Batman; so they did. But one in particular at the time was a former circus performer by the name of 'd**k Grayson'. Bruce had learned and heard of his story and it felt all too the same for the first years he had taken him in and trained him. Then he let him in on the secret of Bruce and so when he grew older, the boy left and went to attend College.
His second meeting of a child was when a youth by the name of Jason Todd had been trying to break into Wayne Manor, instead of calling the authorities Alfred suggested he should take the young man in before he was into crime and so did. However when The Joker returned, he brought more than blowing up hospitals when he captured Jason, whom had taken the mantle of Robin and went out as a hero on his own until Bruce found out about him taking d**k's former alias. He scolded him but then saw the irony. He knew Batman couldn't stay dead and told this to Alfred who sadly understood and didn't threaten to leave. He said he would stick it out and what ever happened he would have known that he followed what Bruce's parents wanted.
But when the Joker beat Jason to death it all became too blurred. The lines were being broken and that's when he himself questioned Batman until he met Tim Drake who like John Blake had figured out Bruce/Batman. The two were more different than Jason and d**k, they were like father and son and Bruce adopted Drake allowing him to even have the name of Tim Wayne if he desired it. Thus he had become the third Robin and for a while the Dynamic Duo had gone out and fought alongside each other until Alfred was put in danger and Tim. Bruce vowed that the city no longer needed Batman and was in the good hands of Tim; which strained their relationship. He allowed Drake to carry his parents' company and Bruce became a recluse once more.
Now, at thirty-eight the billionaire resurfaces onto the city of Gotham to attend a charity ball hosted by Wayne Enterprises. He also sees Tim and while they have a awkward conversation he still has it in his mind like others the Batman is dead.
