Once there was a boy.
He wanted to get himself a heart.
Now by that, I don't mean he was heartless. See, he wanted to get himself a heart companion, a heart-mate, a lover. However, this boy, he had gotten himself a lover before. The lover was immature, inexperienced, and unattached, so naturally this boy wanted to get himself a more loyal partner in love. As he entered the heart store, he told the clerk his preferences. She immediately led him to the section marked 'LOYAL', towards the back. There was an obvious difference between the loyal and casual sections: the loyal hearts were battered and worn. As the boy walked past, he noticed a small heart, bruised with dark purple, at the end of the isle which had started beating more rapidly, almost butterfly-esque, upon his approach. This bruised butterfly peaked the boy's interest, and he found himself drifting towards it. The butterfly heart's speed increased as the boy got closer. The boy noticed that the bruised heart had stitches and staples in it, as well as hot glued areas and what looked like duct tape holding broken pieces of it together. Out of the cracks there were what appeared to be the edges of tags sticking out. The boy asked the clerk: 'How about this one?' The clerk immediately paled and responded: 'Oh, that one. Its... hurt. You don't want to be responsible for such a damaged heart, do you?' The boy leaned down to look at the heart more closely. He picked it up, and, holding it close to his face, examined it, stroking it softly. As he stroked the heart, some of the tags emerged out of the cracks. One read: Gender. Another: Trust. A third read: Second Choice. 'Stop!', the clerk exclaimed. 'The more you love and care for it, the more attached it will get to you!' The bruised heart beat faster as the boy held it. 'But... what if i want it to get attached to me?' The boy asked, still stroking the heart. The clerk snapped back immediately: 'You don't know whats on the other tags. NOBODY wants a broken heart. If you read the other tags, and really see the deeper secrets that only come out with true love, you'll see that its not worth it.' 'But... it's so pretty...' The boy responded, gazing at the heart as he continued to stroke and love it. New tags stuck out, reading 'Cut' and 'Anxiety'. The clerk groaned and muttered: 'It's only pretty on the outside.' Suddenly, the heart stopped producing tags. 'What's happened?' The boy asked. 'It wont tell you any more unless you are with it, and love it, for a very long, long time. It's proof of how broken it is that there are still so many unrevealed tags. The last boy who had this heart brought it back within the month, exclaiming that its too much to handle. He wanted a boy heart instead, because they don't tend to have so many secrets'. The clerk explained. 'Oh.' said the boy 'Well, i don't care. Ill give this heart everything it wants and needs, and everything it could ever want or need.' 'You say that now, but what about later?' The clerk asked. The boy shrugged and looked back at the bruised butterfly, before he kissed it softly. The clerk sighed. 'Fine. Whatever you want. Anyway, that one's free of charge. Its too worn out for it to be sold to anyone who isn't half insane anyway. Good luck.' said the clerk, and walked away. The boy looked back at the heart, stroking it and kissing it; 'Heller, little angel. Don't worry, I'll love you.' whispered the boy. The heart beat faster and faster and faster. The bruised butterfly was in love.
