In a poorly lit room sat a boy at his desk. The boy's hands moved quickly, leaving sloppy words in a moleskin journal. The boy was named Emere Hawkins. He'd been writing furiously for almost half an hour when a small girl who looked about his won age burst into the room. "Mere! Mere! Come over here!" The little girl sang and then laughed at her own rhyme. The boy didn't take his eyes off the paper. "My name is Emere not Mere. And I most certainly will not-" He began to mimick her singing-"Come over there."As soon as he finished speaking, a silence grew between them. After a moment, the girl left the room and the boy resumed writing. Emere hadn't meant to be mean, it wasn't in his nature. He simply loathed the idea of another's company. His friends were his books and he had conversations in his writings, what more could I possibly need? He often thought to himself, and he had never been able to come up with an answer.

As soon as she had begun walking away from Emere's door, the girl broke into tears. What am I doing wrong?She wondered. The girl ached for companionship. They'd been living in the same house for almost two months and he'd never said more than a few sentences to her.
