▪ First-off, I'd like to present a lesson in self-conditioning (classical conditioning). Reading through my textbook (Basic Personal Counselling, 7th Edition, Geldard & Geldard), I often find myself getting bored, and my attention (both auditory and visual) starts to wonder to my surroundings, instead of remaining focused on my text. I started thinking, how do I add a positive conditioned stimuli to this situation to improve my focus? Too easy. After each page I read, I put a blue tick on the page by the page number, I also underline interesting things I want to research further in green, and things I don't really understand (and need to research further) in red, (using a BIC four-colour pen). As I'm reading I keep the pen in my writing hand, with the blue ink clicked down ready to use (the one that only gets used when I finish a page). Holding the pen like this relays the satisfaction of finishing a page (ultimate progress toward course completion) every time I shift my eyes off the page and see it, or even when my attention shifts to the fact that I can feel the pen in my hand. Using the other colours to mark various things on the pages I read just further adds to the amount of active thoughts related to the pen, in turn related to success, in turn prompting me to read further. This pretty-well holds my focus. The addition of calm music helps, be it hip-hop, electronica, pop, rock, whatever, as long as it's not abrasive, you can listen to the song (or an album of good consistency) on repeat, and effectively not listen to the music at all, it just gives your brain that little auditory input to catch onto and not seek any other signals, effectively dampening that sense and allowing solid study.
▪ Tomorrow evening I get on the bus to go to Melbourne (the capitol city of my state, in Australia), it's roughly a 9-10hr trip from my hometown (current town) to the city, taking into account the several stops the bus makes, and the speed it travels at, which always seems to be 10kms under the limit. Upon arrival at around 5-6am Saturday I will go chill at Maccas for a couple hours, maybe have a coffee, and get some study done. My best gaian Leasfy may even join me at this time, or some time over the weekend, marking the first time I have met someone IRL that I met on gaia first (one off the bucket list). The weekend trip is due to a compulsory weekend workshop at my school, which will tie me up from 9am-4:30/5pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
▪ I do however plan to pay clever attention to the streets while I'm down there. As I will be shifting there to live at the end of the year. Compulsory for two years (to complete the 2nd and 3rd years of my degree on-campus), but maybe I'll stay longer if I like it there, especially if I make some good friends, or meet a girl, both of which are unlikely to happen in my hometown.
