This is something that has come up a bit lately. Many people who want "reasonable" gun control only want to ban "assault weapons". I use parenthesis because both terms are a matter of opinion. What they consider reasonable I don't necessarily consider reasonable and same goes for what constitutes an assault weapon. One of the big arguments against banning these supposed assault weapons is the belief that the bans won't end there. Today an AR-15 is called an assault weapon while a mosin nagant is simply a hunting rifle. Tomorrow the mosin is branded a sniper rifle and banned. Many assault weapon ban supporters dismiss that thought as ridiculous as they only want specific guns and not the rest.

One main reason I bring this up is because recently a friend had a gun debate in his class and he was basically branded paranoid for believing that possibility.

So here's the thought. You give up your assault weapons and they promise not to take anything else right?

1934 the National Firearms Act is implemented. They want to make full autos regulated by the ATF, but they won't take anything else away.

1968 Gun Control Act further restricted gun ownership, but we're being reasonable here. We won't come for the rest of your guns.

1986 Gun Ban. We want all full autos. The NFA claimed full autos were regulated, but still legal. Now we want to ban full autos so only military and law enforcement can have it.

1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban. We want to ban scary looking guns. Almost all the criteria are about what a gun looks like rather than what makes a gun more dangerous. We just want to be reasonable. We don't want all your guns. Just the ones that fit the list.

2004 Federal AWB expires and results are inconclusive of having any actual impact on crime reduction.

2012-13 The ban's effectiveness was never proven but we want to implement it again and make it tougher. If we make it tougher it will definitely work this time. We promise we don't want all your guns, just the assault weapons. We said that back in 34, 68, 86, and 94 but this time we really mean it. We won't come back for more.

The slippery sloap might be a "fallacy" to some, but our own history proves it keeps happening so I'm not just taking a wild guess on this happening. I am looking at our history.
