little flowers (unf.)
iiiiiiiiii“I want to show you something.”
iiiiiiiiiiJust as she motions for her pants, she looks up at me and says, “It’s not what you think.” She unbuttons and unzips her jeans and slightly pulls down the hem of her blue underwear.
iiiiiiiiiiSitting right over her womb is a little blue flower with a bright yellow center. Dainty, innocent looking. But, a flower couldn’t sit on her body at that angle without falling off. She’s sitting up, not lying down. The little flower quickly becomes a disturbing [blemish] attached to my friend’s body.

iiiiiiiiiiIt’s been a month since then, since I was shown that damn thing growing on her. The doctor were about to do a CT scan(?) of every inch of Jane’s body until they looked back at a picture of her chest and found a tiny white mark over her heart. Upon closer examination, they traced even tinier lines like spider web [expanding] from the mark. Branching lines, like a tree. A root system.
iiiiiiiiiiIt’s a spore. They don’t know what it is, but it’s a spore. [Adhered] to Jane’s heart. And it’s spreading.

iiiiiiiiiiJane’s been wearing shirts with longer sleeves now, to hide the flowers. The cursed things won’t die from the lack of sunlight though. We tried. As the flowers started spreading, we thought to have Jane sleep in multiple layers of clothes, cover her skin, sleep under her comforter and in complete darkness. Jane sweat a lot that night, but the flowers were still there in the morning, not a single petal wilted. I even found a new one on the edge of her right shoulder. That was five days after she showed me the first flower. That was when the flowers started spreading to her arms. They traveled up from her stomach, and now they’re starting to spread down her arms. If they’ve started traveling below her hips, I haven’t seen them yet. Maybe they’re still a bit too close to… But regardless of any [innuendos] or implications, I wouldn’t care if she showed me anything right now. I just want to know how she’s doing, how Jane’s doing, how my friend is doing. I want to watch this thing progress with her. She doesn’t have to be alone—she showed me that first flower. She also has her family, but she also has me.

iiiiiiiiiiShe’s hiding the flowers at school, and in public, and even in my house. But she doesn’t have to hide them from me. Sometimes we’ll absent-mindedly just pick at the flowers on her skin, but they won’t come off. We stroke the soft petals, but they don’t shrivel in our fingers, and when we pull Jane says, “Ow!” They’re rooted underneath her skin, spreading from Jane’s sweet heart. Why did this happen to Jane? How did this even…we don’t know anything, except that it’s there.

iiiiiiiiiiJane’s doomed. This is the first day of month two, and the doctors can’t do anything for Jane. They thought they could extract the spore through surgery, but that could kill her. Anything that could kill or remove that spore could kill her. The chances of killing her in the process are greater than saving her. Her parents are too worried, and I’m worried too. And, as it is, it’s going to kill her anyway…

iiiiiiiiiiI’ve seen the ones on her legs now. She showed me them once they reached mid-thigh, before she decided she’d start wearing longer shorts in public.
iiiiiiiiii“Jane, I know they’re going down your legs now. Too much time has passed; they’ve got to be on your legs now. Please show them to me,” I said a few days earlier.
iiiiiiiiii“No! I’m not going to show them to you, it’s too embarrassing—”
iiiiiiiiii“Jane, I don’t care, I want to see them—”
iiiiiiiiii“What about me? I care! They’re too high up, I’m not showing them to you.”
iiiiiiiiii“Come on…” I moved my hand to reassure her, as a friend, as support for her, but she slapped it away thinking I was reaching for her leg.
iiiiiiiiii“Don’t touch me there!” she yelled and pulled at the end of her shorts, retreating her legs closer to her. My heart was down in the dumps.
iiiiiiiiii“Jane… I want to go through this with you… I just want to know how my friend is doing.” She looked up at me and then back down. “Will you please show me those flowers?”
iiiiiiiiiiI could see her brow furrow—sad, angry, sad, angry, squinting, sad—“It’s too embarrassing….” She pulled at her shorts more, then flopped onto her side and looked like she was about to cry. I left it alone.

iiiiiiiiiiHow do I know about the flowers on Jane’s abdomen? I slept over at her house for two nights, starting the day she showed me that first flower, for comfort. The second night, I woke up in the middle of the night feeling hot. I looked over to Jane, sleeping on her bed, and noticed that she pushed her sheets down to her waist in her sleep. Her shirt was riding up her torso, and I couldn’t help but look, check, look? Check? Then I saw the flowers, more than just that one Jane showed me. They were bigger than the first one. I worried that the first one had gotten bigger. Alarmed, I abruptly turned the light on to see the flowers. A green one, a turquoise one, and a tiny purple one on her far side that I hadn’t noticed. I woke Jane up, and after some fuss about watching her sleep and checking her out, we discussed her flowers, how they’re spreading, how they’re growing, how they vary, how they feel.
iiiiiiiiiiAt least Jane doesn’t feel any pain when the flowers come. She just wakes up, inspects, and finds more on her body. And she frequently shows them to me, the new ones. The new afflicted areas. It’s spreading. Jane’s doomed.
