The Purpose of a Wall
Can you tell me
the purpose of a wall, m'dear?
Is it to keep you in,
or keep others out?
Is it to protect from the elements,
or scheming eyes?
Is it a mounted defense
or merely decoration?
What, m'dear is
the purpose of this wall, here?
And what would change
if it were gone?
Would you dare venture out?
Would you be under constant visitation?
Would the winds ruin your garden,
or your windows line with jostling faces?
Would you be robbed at night,
or your well-kept home lose beauty?
M'dear, would you allow me to say;
the purpose of your wall,
is to hide your fear?
Poem I wrote over dinner. It is a first draft, and could certainly stand some editing, but I like it well enough.
