She begged for more than her solitude and the bright faces of all the people lured her in. Rumour of a magic well came to mind and Fox searched day and night to find tribute to offer. As Sun whispered at the horizon of a new day, Fox brought the only tribute she could find: A single gold coin, though matted over with dirt and clay. Fox, so anxious in heart, stepped over the lip to drop the coin inside; only to tumble down after."

The old man had been watching the fox all night. The curious works of gathering items of this and that which was, in truth, very unfox-like. If there was ever such a thing. Regardless, he felt amused by this creature as it hopped this way and that. Which, when the fox finally did creep past the wall of the well and tumbled down, great heartache came to him. Gathering his cane to stand, he hobbled towards the inky black pit. Though to dark to see, he heard the splashing of panic. The fox had lived the fall! Though as the sun, slow as it might be, gave light over the valley, the splashing had stopped. Tears welled up in his eyes as he peered down the well. He did not care to see a lifeless animal but knew even if it were, it could not stay down in the well the village used to drink. Focus came to his eyes and upon a few rocks on the edge of the well, laid a small girl, only a coin wrapped about her neck.

As the old man shouted this and that in the village square, no one gave heart. That, until he spoke of a girl at the bottom of the well. Men stopped dead in track and women gasped. Rope was gathered and volunteers picked straws to see who was to be lowered down to gather the small bundle. After a few hours later, the tiny female was whisked out of the well, unconscious but alive. Wrapped in a warm towel, she was brought to a spare room of the old man's, for he was the one to find the child, he was the one to care for it, for no one else knew of who she was.
