I never thought I would be one of those “nerdy band kids” in high school. Guess I thought so deeply wrong. It all started out in Middle School. Whenever I was told about band, I thought, well, nahh. I’m not going to be engrossed enough into it, but as the teacher further described what it would be like I thought, “Ehh, I’ll go to the tryout date just for the hell of it.” I was extremely shy, nobody really payed attention to the girl who read all the books. So, I got my Grandmother to drive me up to the school yada, yada. We got there and there was a mass of instruments all laid out upon the floor and a handful of kids spread out gazing at them. Now everyone always drifts towards the Saxophone, Trumpet, and Flute. Even my Grandmother tried to push me towards the Saxophone. I even tried holding it, and I was like, “Hell naw! I ain’t gonna be able to hold this thing!” I knew from the start I did NOT want to play the flute or the Clarinet because that would be like, stereotyping in my eyes. I tried out the Trumpet and figured nahh I won’t be able to try with all these valves. Then my eyes landed upon the Trombone. I knew, from then on, no matter the jibes, the taunts, and whatever else I would get, I wanted to play it. I’m pretty damn good at it too.
