Narumi's Adventures
The Adventures of Narumi Misuhara
10th Year!
Once again well past time for an update!!! Since this is my first journal of the year, I'll start off with some of the projects of yesteryear and where they currently stand.

Games
One of the projects that was supposed to have started rolling out last year was an update to most of the games. This update was to unify the grants of all the games and fix bugs where we could. We also planned to make Puzzles far easier to update. This project was delayed due to other projects (like Towns 2) falling behind. We'll continue once these projects are back on track.

Site Ads
As we said we would we've put ads in daily chance. For those of you out there without adblock or who have funded, thanks you! Allowing the ads to show around the site is a huge help especially since we no longer bring in the sponsorships that we used to. Many people have the assumption that we are just raking in to dough, but this isn't the case and without the sponsors that we used to have that's lost revenue that we are trying to make up with advertising. Your guys' continued support is greatly appreciated!

Alchemy
Details are still being worked out. Originally I wanted to have this out by this month but it's had to be re-prioritized for other important projects on our 2013 list. I will do what I can however to try to get this out for you guys as soon as possible!

zOMG!
Bug fixes have been released since last I posted, we hope to have more in the future as well. People still seem confused on "who" is working on this, so I'll clarify that here. There are no full time developers on zOMG! at this time. They have either moved on from Gaia, or are working on games for Gaia Interactive's social teams. What we do have is a former zOMG! dev who we periodically contract to help us out with bug fixes and the like. We are trying to see how feasible it would be to train someone on the Gaia Online team how to program things for zOMG!. If it is not to crazy, we'll have one of the devs learn what they can so that at the very least we can hopefully activate the events in the game.

Towns 2
codemonkey37179 is still slaving away on this. The next phase is housing and it's looking pretty dang awesome! We are hearing those of you unhappy about the changes, but in the long run it's a needed change. The code for Towns was so old it simply was not maintainable. In addition, having many different flash spaces made it difficult to do unified updates. With Rally, VH and Towns all together, one thing done in one area will work in all areas which is the ideal situation. Plus it allows us to start fleshing out the Gaia world as a world and not a bunch of different parts. We know the biggest complaint seems to be the inability to create rooms. I'm not sure we'll bring it back the way it was but I'm considering options to do things like create private chat areas within Towns 2. The Towns 2 project will be going on well into 2014 (Yes, I actually planned it out that far ahead), but it should see some pretty awesome updates along the way. smilies/icon_smile.gif

Events
Events still going strong thanks to the development work of Uncle Kenney If you've been dying for the Easter Bunny to get back into the action of events, then you'll want to stay tuned. smilies/icon_wink.gif

..Phew, well, I think that covers last year. Hard to believe this year is our ten year anniversary! We've had our planning meetings for 2013 and I think projects are very fitting considering.

2013 Projects
Alright, now for the part you've been waiting for ...what you can expect for 2013! Well here's a few of the projects on the list, note that these are things we intend to get done this year, whether we are actually able to is a different story. smilies/icon_razz.gif
Inventory Arranger update, Guilds update, forums display update, Towns 2 updates, new games and plenty more! Should be an exciting year smilies/icon_smile.gif

...Until Next Time,
Narumi Misuhara
Manager, Engineering

Thanks for the info!
Question: Where can one find the bugs that have been fixed in zOMG?
and as a suggestion:
Is it possible to make the preview image in jigsaw bigger? sometimes is hard to tell the details because of the size of the little pieces (insane level)

Alchemy: Sorry, but I've lost hope in this feature. It was a**-backwards from the start. Gonna have to do some amazing changes to the feature to make me want to try it.

zOMG!: Get a dev on it ASAP. Also, can games finally be added to Buccaneer Boardwalk? I picture the games paying out in tickets instead of gold. This will probably get more people into playing. Keep up the work on the glitch fixes.

Towns 2: So far, good stuff. Can't wait for it to be released.

So, wait... Nothing till... Easter? cat_smilies/icon_gonk.gif

I mean, Apocalypmas was really, really anti-climatic and I'm happy with the pace of the manga, but... Uncle Kenny's latest journal entry only mentions a (supposedly) great summer event... Nothing on Easter... And... What about everything else inbetween?? cat_smilies/icon_sad.gif

I mean, the Civil New Year was ignored (really hoping the star on the tree for Apocalypmas was going to do something then), we have Lunar New Year next (unless MLK Jr is getting some Gaia recognition, then his day would be, technically, next), Mardi Gras, V-Day, Gaia's 10th Anniversary, and St. Patrick's Day... All of which occur before... Easter cat_smilies/icon_stare.gif

Not saying we need really elaborate events for every Holiday (like we get with Hallowe'en and, normally, Xmas), but something a bit more than a forum event would be nice (sure, chasing Waffles to get quoted and SPAM-ing pirate nonsense is amusing, but... I think those are better suited for lesser, non-holiday days like Talk-like-a-Pirate day or, for an up-coming example, this year's π day cat_smilies/icon_wink.gif ).

I guess I'm just saying there is a lot between now and Easter that, while I appreciate everything being done by Code Monkey (more non-housing items in our houses please!) and the attention zOMG is getting (would like more, but I truly appreciate what is being done), I just really was hoping 2013 would be different in this regard... cat_smilies/icon_neutral.gif

I don't like that alchemy got bumped for a lot of backend updates. The features work, but need revamped to increase functionality, no argument there. I have to admit I'm even kind of scared of the organizer update. It was so glitchy when it first came out, I remember losing an item or two to thin air, and the random jumbling if you moved things too soon, etcetc. @_@ If I may make a minor suggestion for it? I think a huge cause of many glitches was the constant loading requirements of saving after EVERY move. It'd be nice to organize my items how I want and THEN save the changes all at once. That way you don't have to worry about code jumbling because the page reloaded but the thumbnails didn't, moving things too soon, etcetc. It could even make movement smoother if made just right. I just hope it doesn't end up like the wishlist organizer, that thing is a pain to use if you've got a lot on it. x-x Plus seeing those updates on the list.... Those are some pretty damn huge coding tasks, I fear how long they will take to get through!!

But uhh.. back to alchemy XD;;;
Don't you guys think it's more important to get the alchemy update out before changing features that have lasted for 5+ years as they are? I know they need updates, but people have gotten used to it not happening (myself included, I used to be organizer update obsessed haha)The Alchemy feature, on the other hand, impacts users DAILY because it requires consumption of users' hard earned gold and items, and also waterfalls into the marketplace/exchange when alchemized items are sold/resold/bought/etc and ingredients/items become more and more difficult to find (even for people who want the items for personal wear, rather than ingredients).

Plus... bumping projects is how those original features got so out of hand in the first place. I am terrified the same will happen to alchemy the way it keeps getting pushed further and further back. I have been dying to get further along with it for a year now, but I know with the revamp(s) coming investing in it at this point would cause me some amount of unnecessary or pointless losses.

Also, can you please consider something whenever the alchemy update does finally get on the table? In 2004 at a convention panel users were promised that wings would be released through some sort of quest method, because Gaia staff knew they would be highly sought after and wanted it to be something EVERYONE could earn if they committed the TIME, and wouldn't rely on/or favor those who are gold rich. NOT to be as a monthly collectible, because they wanted it to be permanently available to stave off supply and manipulation issues.
That explanation stuck with me this whole time, both because of how anticipated wings have been, but also because of how considerate they were being of the community. It was the entire reason for making users wait SO LONG to see the wings, in order to release them in a way that would be to users' benefit. However, as you may have noticed, the current way wings are obtained has drastically strayed from this idea. I hope the promises made to us in 04 will be re-considered during the revamp... Gold and monopolization has become a crutch in alchemy that bars a large percent of the population from making any progress within it, let alone ever seeing the wings..

Darniiiiiiiiit. I typed up this awesome suggestion last week but I think it didn't submit cause of capcha and now it's forever lost to interwebs purgatory.

Well, summary of what I can remember... Grant wing recipes/wings for certain milestones.

Example:

Person logs on every day for 6 months = Granted a wing recipe (either of their choice, or randomly selected by system).
After the 1 year milestone, they can choose to progress to the next step of the recipe (ie, claiming the small wings)
So basically, if the person logs on for 2 years straight, they would be able to progress all the way to the finale large backwings.

To prevent abuse:
1) Account must be at least 1 years old before starting.
2) Claiming each step requires sacred keys. 1 key for the recipe, 2 keys to claim the small backwings, 3 keys for medium, and 4 keys for large.

Other milestones this could be implemented on: Post counts (10k, 20k, 40k, and 60k), Cumulative Gaia Cash charges (prizes soulbound for 1 week to prevent fraud), etc.

Also, I just now thought of this, but you might consider granting them to an account when it hits its 10 years old birthday. The trick, though, is that the wings can ONLY be claimed on the accounts birthday, not at any time. Since this year will be Gaia's 10 year anniversary, it's kind of perfect. Plus, people who've been waiting 10 years for gaia to finally release these wings are kinda the ones who deserve them the most. :3

Edit: Forgot to mention these would all be in addition to the crafting method of getting wings, buuuuut, I came up with some minor changes to the suggestion since it still might be mass craftable the way I currently suggested it.

The formulas are still granted at the first milestone, but are soulbound. They will either be Type a, type b, type c, etcetc depending which milestone they have been granted for achieving.
Now, at the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th milestones, instead of automatically granting the wings, it grants a special gem - type a, b, c, etc depending on the type of milestone, that can be used as the SOLE ingredient needed to complete the next step of the wing formula. These gems would also be soulbound. Crafted wings would not be soulbound.

IF you want to mix and match achievements, instead of segregating gems by type, you could just require 1 gem for 1st recipe step, 2 gems for the next, and 3 gens for the final large backwings. That way people can complete 1 set of wings without necessarily finishing every step of a single achievement, but by mixing up achievements instead, if you prefer it that way.

It prevents mass farming because everything would be soulbound (gems ingredient + free grant recipe), and the wings wouldn't be completely free - you'd still have to pay the crafting fees and deal with success rates/level requirements [which is the main thing that would prevent botters and whatnot], but get to avoid the hassle of collecting hundreds of millions worth of ingredients as a reward for the user's dedication to Gaiaonline.

Oh man! Thank goodness for a guild update! I'm expecting it to happen this summer after the Easter event has cooled off a bit! Am I right? Any clues in what we can expect from it? Too much to ask for an entire overhaul to conform with the forums? Will it be included in the apps for iPhone and android once the update is complete? Sooo many questions!

*totally staying tuned*

It all sounds brilliant and exciting. Thank you for all your hard work.

Also OH NOES! What happened to our sponsors? I may have been one of the only people to really like getting the odd sponsor item here and there.
