Childhood dangers.

The night is deep and dark. It's the same no matter where you are. Gigantic flying beasts buzz a war like call around the lighting fixtures on your ceiling. Their drone is familiar, but frightening at the same time. They spin like time; around and around until they smack into the bulb and fall to the ground. But the [beasts] do not stop there, their quest for the unknown is too great to give up at such a small hindrance.

They are not defeated until the eastern horizon lights up in a golden array. Worn and scarred they lay still on the wooden floor. Perhaps they are sleeping, or perhaps they have perished. We cannot tell for the sleep in which they sleep is so deep -- so wondrous -- that nothing can stimulate their life-like senses. Which is why they are often mistaken for lifeless.

All of a sudden a roar erupts from the next room. The air tightens as you hear the monster approach. The ground around you shakes as it slides backwards and forwards across the ground. You can feel the air around you being swallowed in great gulps. You can hear the whining... It screams your name loudly.

Whoosh! It passes past your door. You're stuck in your own room. It is circling your safe-haven. You can't get away. The menacing scream is overwhelmingly loud. You can't concentrate. You want it to stop, but it never does.

It passes in front of your door once again. This time you can hear bits of dust being sucked up by the long snout. They crackle as they enter and flow into the belly. The noise gets louder still. You have to back away from the door. You are too frightened to try and protect yourself. The longer you traverse from the door, however, the louder the noise seems to get.

The screaming isn't stopping! You can feel it now: the beast wants to eat you. It wants to engulf your entire body and take it into the depths of its own stomach. It is screaming now. Dying would be an easy option at this point, you don't see much hope for yourself.

You cry out as you realise there is no way this could end. Warm tears paint your face in a flowing river. They fall down your cheeks; they want to escape your horrible despair. But your sobbing seems to muffle the sound of the beast. It is almost as though it is comforting to cry. You don't feel any safer, but you feel a lot closer to home. The path down your face that the tears have left is drying. It turns into breaking mud and creates a path to your heart.

Suddenly, as fast and as dramatic as the beast came, it left. In a flourish of dust and powder, the noise stops. You can hear something familiar... FOOTSTEPS!

They joy overwhelms you and you collapse into a ball. You aren't crying out of fear now. You are crying because you have never felt so safe; never so alive and so lucky! Warm flowing happiness tickles your up-standing hairs as you hear the words, "Are you okay?"
