So I guess this is just my take on the Christmas event. First off, I like the advent calender lamp post. It was a cute idea and the items that came from it were pretty nice.
The caroling items weren't bad. The style, along with the red and gold color suggested a classic look, which was a breath of fresh air when compared to the white/light blue outfit that was distributed the previous year. Although, the style of last year's items far exceed that of this year's items.
The actual event had a cute story, but it didn't really grab me. I felt no real connection to 'The Carol of Old Pete' and therefore didn't feel inspired to get involved. The mechanics of the event was similar to the Christmas event from a few years ago where we have to donate items in order to receive things in exchange. There was a daily grant, which unfortunately, half of which consisted of Christmas themed alchemy components.
I was confused by the donation rewards. Most of which being alchemy components, and I still have no desire at all to get involved in that feature. I've come to expect that alchemy junk is going to be a constant in every event from now on. That's fine, because I'll likely sell it all off. The other items were things recently released in the shops. Baos and day coats in a range of colors, and two colors of Christmas trees. Why put these items in the stores if they are to be awarded in the event? Why put event items in the store? With as many Christmas trees that are being given out, they may not sell another one of those two colors from the shop for the next five years. I've personally gotten nearly fifty of each that I plan to try to sell over the course of the next several Decembers.
The day coats are cute. Nothing fancy or extravagant. I doubt I'll ever attempt to work them into my avi, considering that I have jackets that I like a lot better. The bao I'm having trouble collecting, but I've tried them out on my avi and they don't really work with my hair. I'm sure some girls will really like them, but they don't do a thing for me. Again, more stuff to sell.
Overall, I didn't care about this event nearly as much as I have for Christmas events in years past. I loved the 2010-2011 Christmas event. The interactive NPCs alone were amazing.and captivated my interest throughout the whole event. I don't expect every event will hit it out of the park, but I would expect a little more effort would be put into Christmas, and that they would try to outdo themselves each year. I didn't get that feeling at all with this event. I've seen a lot of people complaining about this event, saying it wasn't as enjoyable as the event from last Christmas, so perhaps someone at Gaia HQ will take note of this and release an event for the 2012-2013 season that will blow our socks off. I'll be waiting to find out.
