--Uttering another curse, Daniel quickly gathered up his drawings and began to stuff them into the leather binder, failing to notice when a figure dropped silently out of the trees a few feet behind him. Just as he had most of his drawings somewhat inside the binder, a loud snap suddenly broke the silence of the forest, startling him so badly he jumped and whipped around. He had no time to react before a black and white blur raced toward him and slammed into his chest.
The next thing he knew he was laying on the ground, winded, with a thick tree branch pushing against his throat. His sheaf went flying, spilling the papers all over the ground, but he was too focused on something else to care. Straddling his torso was a tan-skinned woman with wild black hair and large, fierce eyes. Daniel gasped for air and tried to push back, bucking his hips and thrashing his legs in an attempt to get her off. She held on, however, and grit her teeth, pressing the branch harder into his windpipe, making breathing even more difficult.
When his movements slowed a bit from lack of oxygen, she leaned down slightly. “What are you doing in my forest?” the woman snarled, not even phased by his wild struggles.
He tried to respond, but only managed another gasp. As his vision grew spotty, he desperately groped at the ground and was able to get a fistful of dirt. In a last-ditch attempt to get free, he threw the dirt into her face.
Miraculously, the tactic worked. She let out a small yelp and one hand went to her eyes out of reflex, in turn relieving some of the pressure on his throat. Daniel quickly gulped in some much-needed air and took advantage of her momentary distraction by grabbing the branch and shoving with all his might, twisting his body at the same time.
Caught by surprise, the woman slipped sideways and landed on her hip. Daniel immediately disentangled himself from her legs and scrambled to his feet, coughing as he rubbed his neck. Within moments, his attacker was back on her feet as well, jabbing the jagged end of the tree branch at him.
He held up his hands, backing away
