We lived in a small village, my sister and I. It’s all we’ve known since our births. Our home was surrounded by water and miles of sky. It was beautiful and welcoming, but there was something that lurked underneath. A creature folk in our village called the Lock fish. Many had been attacked and only one so far has survived. I, myself, have seen this beast attack, but at a far distance, safe from its massive jaws.
It was a fish, from what we could see, but it was ten times the size of a great white and had twice as many long, jagged teeth. I wanted to ride my home of this nightmare, but what can a five year old girl do.
“Izzy, stay away from the dock front with that load of fish.” Mr. Shay called out to me from his store front.
I smiled widely at him and jumped my way over to him with the large bag of fish I had been carrying. The man drafted the bag as much as I made it a giant. Mr. Shay owned the only fish and bait shop in our village because most everyone else was afraid. The Lock fish attacked when one was holding, or just near, certain fish found locally in these waters. Well at least that’s what many believed. But of course that didn’t stop people from fishing. We lived off of whatever we caught on land or in the sea and if there was no game on land you had to turn to sea.
“Come now, Izzy, we must get these fish cleaned up and ready to sell.” Mrs. Shay, the woman who has watched over me and my sister since our parents left, always had an up-beat tone in her voice, but of recently she’s sound a little down.
I gladly took my place at the counter outside the shop and got ready to help clean the fish. But something caught the corner of my eyes and I whipped my head around to see my best friend, Jacob. He wore ripped, cotton bottoms and worn shoes.
