Japan Entry #2
1st Full Day in Japan - July 8, 2009

I woke up an hour before the time to actually wake up which was 6:30 a.m. I woke up covered in sweat, wanting a shower. But I stayed laying until Yuki woke up and showed me how to work the shower. The bathroom was a little room with a tub and a movable, mini shower head where I either stood in the middle of the floor or sat on an upside down bucket. The water drained into the cracks between the floor tiles. At first I stood in the bath tub because I wasn't sure if I just stood there on the floor... but then I tested out the floor to make sure the water drained. It was hard getting use to changing the temperature but I finally got the hang of it after a little experimenting... plus the hot water takes forever to warm up. To check the time and temperature in the morning you have to press a button that is surround by other buttons. At one point I pressed one that made a weird dinging noise (and I could hear Yuki's mom speaking in Japanese to Yuki and then laughing) so I felt pretty stupid.

After I got done with the shower I put on a brown flowy skirt with a brown tank top and a white over shirt. I wore my flip flops that have the checkered design with them. Then I had breakfast which consisted of a hash brown and bread. Which is more than I ever eat for breakfast. It was hard cutting a hash brown with chopsticks so her mom gave me a fork. I thought we'd be riding bikes to school in the morning (because that's what the host family information told me) but instead her mom drove us since the weather was rainy. <--Yes, it's raining AND it's hot and muggy. But by now I'm already use to being sweaty and hot (I've just returned from a long day at school and have been writing since the end of the Korean trip).
Well, I followed Yuki to her class on the 6th floor! Yeah... the school has 7 floors in total! <--which is probably why they have 3 elevators. Anyway, we entered the classroom and I was greeted with very loud, Japanese teenagers! It was quite weird. And then they played a joke on one of their classmates by setting me in his seat. So he sat in another persons seat who came in and went "eh...?" lol, it was really funny but slightly awkward. After that the teacher came in and they had to do an announcement plus sing a religious, Christian song, almost like we pledge to the flag. After that they started stripping and changing into their athletic clothes right in the classroom. I mean, the girls just slipped shorts on under their skirts and wrestled their shirts on w/out fully exposing their upper halves. But the boys were stripping down to their boxers!

After they left to do their athletic competition thing, I went to the 7th floor where the rest of the Americans were (since this was a school trip and people from around America and Canada were on it as well). We talked over our schedule for the day and then headed out to the Seirei church where we met the priest who talked about the church and how much the Japanese owe us for coming over 200 or so years ago and introducing our religion: Christianity. After the church we went to the Seirei University where they showed us their specialty: medical and historical. WE went into one room where they droned on about a historical time line, but truthfully, I was too hot to care. After that we saw some other rooms where some Japanese girls were practicing nursing. We also visited the university's library which was huge! After all that we went to the Seirei Hospital where they just showed us how many people were working their as doctors (a lot).

Then we walked all the way back to the high school and ate lunch which was made by Yuki's mom in a bento that had a Hello Kitty design. It contained 2 sandwiches as big or a little smaller than my fist which were delicious except for the lettuce in which I picked off. It also had 2 mini hot dogs with ketchup and these 2 miniature egg role things. In this cute little butter cup holder was a weird green spongie thing that tasted really good! And next to that were some pieces of what tasted like beef. I ate everything but the lettuce on my sandwiches. Before I ate my bento (which I forgot to take a picture of >.<+) I filled up my water bottle in the cafeteria and since I was the last person to fill mine I got stuck walking back alone. On the way I bowed to a group of girls who bowed back and as soon as I walked fully past them they started squealing, "Ooh! Kawaii yo!" (Meaning: I'm cute)... lol, it was really funny.

After lunch we visited a little bit, went fully over our schedule and got handed T-shirts with a Seirei logo. And then we headed to the gym where we were introduced to the whole school. After the awkward introduction it was pretty much time to go home, but Yuki had to study a little later so me, Matt, and Morgan wandered around Hamamatsu looking for a convenient store but didn't have any luck so we went into the schools cafeteria and found a store in there where we bought drinks. Around that time I found Yuki and her mom picked us up and took us home. As soon as I got home I started writing in here about my first fully day in Japan! I ended up falling asleep after the third page or so. I slept till they woke me up for dinner which was of a giant egg thing with rice and some over sort of substance (I think) in the middle... I took one bite and almost gagged. I glanced at the bowl beside my plate and saw green stuff (miso soup) and decided not to eat it. So I tried the chicken instead which was really good but my stomach was really upset after that egg, rice, and other substance. So I watched TV the rest of the time and explained to Yuki and her mom that my stomach was upset. Yuki told me I didn't have to force myself to stay up so I headed to bed and slept all the way till morning (6:30 a.m.).
