| Honestly, I watched this site grow up since late 03'. Yeah, Gaia was about anime, video games, and all the sorts of fantasy. You could indulge yourself in rp and play your character in a fantasy setting. True there were "lol narutoz" threads and such, but most people usually just shoveled on past and ignored them. Gaia back in the day was a small community forum site, not this large dot on the internet map. Gaia started to change... oh around late 06'- early 07' when they first started doing movie sponsors and sending out little questionnaires. The big question on the survey was 'Do you think Gaia should become a pay site?' This caused a s**t storm of drama with gaians suspecting their beloved admins of maybe going to the dark side. The admins reassured us the only thing we would pay for is Donation Letters. (Now Monthly Collectibles) Well around late 07'' Gaia really got hot and heavy with cooperation sponsors, even giving us a new play toy thanks to Scion. Racing cars was the first real blow to the Gaian community, when Coorperation sponsors really popped its head. We took it with a grain of salt and understood that Gaia now shovels out quite a bit of money for it's bandwidth, so we let it pass. A bunch more movie sponsors, MTV plugs, and ripping from other sites (i.e. 4chan fiasco) we came upon the first Gaian p2p game. Now unlike the cash shop where you would buy items with real money, something the Gaians back in the old days sworn against, a new toy showed up. Faunzy's flute. This was pretty much the last nail in the former Gaia coffin. The Gaians broke the single most important promise they made to the Gaian community. Maybe it was a 5 to 4 vote, maybe everyone approved, we don't know. But that day in the office made Gaia what it is today, Gaia is no longer the safe anime hideaway it used to be. Yes, it has grown up and started making friends with people that we all might not like. Kinda like Gaia growing up from her awkward anime obsession tween days, to her now blossoming teen life, she's become very popular, going to the mall with her friend Scion and MTV to go see the new movie she's been telling everyone about. Not saying her grown up version is for the best. But we can't tell her what to do. We're not her parents, only the admins can choose what to make her do. ~Romi |
