I figured out why my character wears his mask.
It's not to do anything other than hide his facial expressions, thus he can't telegraph his blows with that. His mouth is also covered, and he can subvocalize incantations for his Kido stuff without giving away that he is actually speaking a long and complex incantation.
Everything I have seen shows that the Bankai, incantations, shikai and so on are vocalized, but that they don't have to be loud, just audible, meaning that you can whisper them outside the threshold of hearing.
So for me, having a full face mask on will definitely work to hide the speaking until it's time to actually "fire" it which should take the opponents by surprise.
