Death, Superstitions and Maybe a few Wise Words
I firmly believe that February brings no good and it is said that things always come in threes.

I finished off my Spring Break this year by attending the funeral of one of my friends' mother. Upon returning home, my father found he had received an email from a co-worker saying that a co-worker's wife had died from complications with the flu. Earlier this February a friend of mine's uncle had died - not an uncle by blood, that is, but one of his mother's close close friends. These are all people my parents' age. They aren't old, not by today's standards. My mum is probably only half way through her life. Then again, maybe I'm being hopeful thinking she'll reach 110 without a problem. Mrs. D- was only diagnosed with cancer 4, 5 months ago. She turned 55 less than two weeks ago, celebrating her last birthday on her deathbed.

I'm in college. People my age shouldn't have to bury a parent. One doesn't bury parents, one buries grandparents. Maybe it is because this seems so unfair. Her daughters were some of the nicest, kindest people I know. Her entire family.

Maybe it is that I'm just realizing how fragile life is. My boyfriend ran his truck into a ditch last weekend, right off the freeway. He's fine. Still, how easy is it for things to have been just a little bit worse? There was a semi there. And then this has been a hard, hard winter. The three deaths in February. My dad's cousin died in December. Velcro, who very much was a member of my family died in January, in my mother's arms. Two different friends' grandparents this winter. And then there were the celeberty deaths, what with Benazir Bhutto and Heath Ledger. Both very shocking to say the least. And that's just touching on the current world events. . .

Then, maybe there is some hope, solace at least, in the idea that we all do have a purpose in life, and that when we fulfill that purpose we die. Death being very much a reward as anything. Or, there is always Dumbledore's wise words, "Do not pity the dead. . . Pity the living, and, above all, those who live without love."

Anyways, here's to hoping that with change of seasons comes a change in fortunes, and much love.
