You think you can undermine a senseless act by making it even more senseless?! World War II was caused by evil people! Evil people like Hitler, and evil people who stood and watched and let this happen! The inhumanity! They sat and watched as Jews were degraded! Millions died! You think this is a joke, punks?!
No, we don't believe World War II is an event to be reckoned with. If more than anything, we're trying to create awareness of it; we're trying to show how complex the Holocaust was. It wasn't about "Nazis vs. Jews"; no, there was more. It wasn't so simple-cut; the Holocaust showed the two sides of people. The ability for doubts to destroy and assumptions to kill. The way it turned man against his brother until at the brink of the nonexistance of man is what intrigues us. The way one man was able to wipe out so many Jewish people because of his efforts to "make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, eventually they will believe it". It shows the inhumanity and faults of us people. And it questions the limits on forgiveness. When can one forgive and forget? Is there a limit? A right? Is retribution required? Is there no justice like that of revenge? The ability of the Nazis to degrade the Jews that in term the Jews assumed they knew the Nazis. I mean, Arreter is created out of the fabric of the idea that not everything is white and black, and you can't judge someone by who/what they choose to be.
More importantly, though; World War II is a controversial topic. Moreso than 9/11, because the Nazis and such had no reasons to assassinate the Jews. But it's controversial and uncomfortable topics like these that need to be explored in order to further push the human race. It's easy to say, "Yes, the Nazis killed the Jews because they're horrible people." But by easing ourselves with such "clean-cut" ideas of simplicity, we're slowing down the human race and development. We need to question why(?!) and find out.
And there is no right like that of the Bill of Rights that assures everyone freedom of speech. By pushing the limits to society on something like the Holocaust, we're initially celebrating the rights this very country stands for.
And throwing such ideas in the air helps make America a marketplace of ideas, where we're allowed to be free. It's about being free and getting free-er.
Moreover, the whole meaning of the Holocaust was to learn how to forgive and how to forget. If Hitler had learned, maybe the Jews wouldn't have happened.
And there is no country like Germany - a country able to leave the horrible concentration camps up to reveal to the world its shame. There is no country more humble than one that is able to erect a memorial to immortalize its shame. Suu is done ranting. Her fingers hurt. Dx
