I don't think it's 'bad' per say. To each their own, mostly!
The main issue isn't really that I don't like it; it's not my thing, true! But so what? I also don't like Funions but I don't think people who do are monsters.
The issue is that I fight against Human Trafficking which is modern day slavery. I work for ALERT here in Arizona, I even wrote Predator Turned Prey for them to use and with their help on the facts! I am used to seeing real slavery... children being kidnapped, being found dead, being rapped, being shipped out of the country or into the country... adults being forced into the same thing as well as labor and other jobs... I'm too used to seeing the boys and girls sitting at the police station crying and afraid because they can't go home or their parents sold them or it's just been so long they can't remember where they used to be before the abuse. Too used to dealing with the fact that there are harsher penalties for drug dealers than there are for slave traffickers. Having to see their faces as they are informed that they will be deported or sent to foster care... that they may never see their families again; that their captors are getting maybe four years in prison and then only if they testify.
Then I see a group of people who think pretending to be slaves is kinky and fun. "What are you complaining about? It's hot!"
No it's not. You have safety words; you chose that life. More often than not you chose the person who is your 'master' and it's all pleasurable to you.
The idea of people wanting to be 'slaves' makes me angry because I lived as a real one. It's not sexy or fun it's forced. My father was an... interesting individual... I'm against the idea that S&M is slavery in ANY sense.
If S&M is your thing... fine! I know a lot of people are into it, but real slavery means no choice. I am against the fact that there was an S&M group who held a fund raiser saying "Help our slaves" "free the slaves" "donate to stop the abuse" they even used ALERT flyers then filmed themselves buying sex toys with the 'donations' they'd gotten while laughing at our organization and efforts.
One person from that group was over talking to us and asked "Where's the proof?" a common question and the answer is "Me."
I told my story like I've had to plenty of times before and it's still hard.
She laughed. That's where the quote above came in. "It's kinky!" She told me I was a baby, "some people just can't take it"... I wanted to kill her. One of the police officers there for our organization dragged her away from the table and gave her a looong talk. Before I left one of her friends came and appologized on her behalf.
"I heard your story and I'm so sorry... I mean, I really like being controlled... but I can't imagine a life like that." She said she always thought the idea of rape was fun, till someone actually did try to rape her. It was a tragic story... she'd been walking to her car and got jumped. She said she was scared from the start because she didn't know if he wanted her dead or what. "I thought that was what I wanted! It was different when it was actually happening, though." She managed to get away by stabbing the guy with her key in his shoulder or throat, I can't fully remember.
People like that give me hope. I'm not against people like that. And yes, she was still there with that other girl, she was still into the S&M stuff, but so what? She's still an OK person. She had a story like everyone else.
I know not everyone who is into that sort of stuff thinks REAL slavery is a joke; they're not trying to go against ALERT and our efforts! I know that's just their thing it's what turns them on, it's something they need or simply something they enjoy... it's just not my thing. I don't like it being called Slavery.
ALSO! In all my art contests I forbid S&M art. That rule was added because we received 'artwork' from a person who kept putting Hunter into S&M situations... multiple times. He asked if it was appropriate, I said NO Hunter was 13 and at that age putting them into ANY sexual position was wrong! Well, this person kept it up. Not only that, the pictures kept getting worse till enough people complained they got them banned from Gaia.
I wanted to make it clear that my novels that involve slavery was NOT S&M slavery. It was true slavery, Human Trafficking, and that I don't want pictures of Hunter enjoying being in chains or any of them happy about bondage.
So, yeah, that's it. If you're into S&M that's your deal. I FULLY believe "Harm Ye None Do What Ye Will"
My only problem is REAL slavery. True slavery does hurt people. It hurt me and I have the scars to prove it.
