Day 41.

( continued story from day 33)

It was a light tune, soft and beautifully sad. It made Autumn smile, until she remembered that there shouldn't be anybody singing in her apartment. She lived alone (well, save for her currently-missing hallucinations). And so, grabbing the nearest thing that could be used to keep an intruder at bay, she made her way towards the sweet song...and froze at the sight that reached her as she entered the kitchen.

There, sitting upon her counter in the pale and weak sunlight, sat a sort of person...sort of, because, well...they appeared to be see-through, and rainbow. But what a sight, nonetheless! The boy sat there, eyes closed, feet swinging childishly over the side. Now, Autumn thought wryly, all he needed was furry woodland creatures gathered around him, and she'd think she stepped into a disney movie. She waited until the boy had finished his stanza, and then called out softly.

"Excuse me."

The see-through child's eyes shot open, and he squeaked, sinking into the counter.

Wait, what? Into?

Day 130

Autumn woke with a start as her bed dipped at a new weight. Panic. Panic. PANIC! She scrambled, and whimpered, and tangled her legs in her blankets. Oh-my-god-oh-my-god what had finally come to get her in the night? She knew that something eventually would, or someone, but she hadn't expected it so soon! Ohhh, who would look after Ati? Giving a terrified little squeak, she cringed and closed her eyes as the thing lunged at her..

...and found herself enveloped in a rather pleasant embrace. What? Cautiously, she opened her eyes...to find herself looking at shaggy brown hair, lilac-skin...she gasped. "Ati..?" A hug. Her little Ativan was hugging her. Suddenly, Autumn felt close to tears. She hugged him back, clinging desperately to him. "Autumn.." the boy murmured, smiling happily and leaning against her, "I can touch stuff now n_n. Can I have a glass of water?"

His only answer was a sob of relief from Autumn, who finally had somebody real to cling to in a world full of people who wanted her dead.

Day xxx

Autumn didn't so much "awaken," per se. It was more like she just wasn't asleep anymore. There was no groggy stretching, no sleepy blinking, just...she wasn't asleep anymore.

She could hear the muted sound of the television, still on in the other room--some cartoon, but she couldn't really distinguish which one. The floor was cold, and she barely resisted the urge to flinch back under the covers. A quick glance at her radio-clock told her that it was a little after 1pm--time to get up. How could it seem so quiet in there, when she clearly could hear the tv? Perhaps it was just that everything was so still, almost seeming to hold its breath. Had it been waiting for her to wake up?

Quietly, she shuffled off into the community kitchen. The sound of dirty plates shifting in the sink was jarring, but her mouth was too dry not to clean a glass for herself. Somebody should do the rest of those dishes, but it wasn't going to be her. Besides, she was busy--it was meds time.

A sudden insight--she missed Ati. He had been gone for awhile now, hadn't he? Her brow furrowed in concentration, Autumn tried to remember when he had left--was it last night? The night before? A week ago? She couldn't remember. She vaguely thought that he had said something about "going home," but that didn't really make any sense. Wasn't she home now? Wasn't his home with her? No, he couldn't have said that.

He couldn't have said anything, really. He couldn't have been there. A hallucination made real and tangible was still a hallucination, after all. Just...one of multiple senses, or something. Yeah, it had seemed real, but how could it have been? Perhaps she had just been lonely. Perhaps she had just been crazy.

That, at least, made her lips twitch into what might have been a smile but that it didn't reach her eyes. She was crazy. That was why she was here, wasn't it? She wasn't better. But she seemed to not be hallucinating her lovely friend anymore...a pity, really. At least then she would have some company. Anything was better than this solitary limbo that she was living in.

"Come back."

Maybe it was foolish, talking to the silence, but for some reason she strained to hear a response. When none came, all Autumn could do was shrug and sigh. Had she really expected more?
