[ Division Meeting ] Death Standing (ASSESSMENT p.2!)

No big deal. Just another creepy stroll on the beach with some adult dude he didn't know.

Wash heard a noise, and at first dismissed it as the tide. But as the roaring sound of the ocean grew louder, he became increasingly alarmed, until -

A massive, wet tentacle slapped the beach ahead of him. It glistened wetly, and generally looked sinister.

"What."

Samuel at this point paused, crossing his arms and indicating with a nod of his head that this was going to be someone else's problem.

Yeah, Wash thought, because little teeny baby buckler shields are so great at hacking through seafood. "We can't just like, walk around - AHH!" At this point, bored of the conversation, the tentacle wrapped itself around his ankles and yanked him off his feet.

Spitting sand, he wailed on the thing with Sally until after a few squelchy blows it let go of it's hold on his legs.

"A little help here, superior officer? I wasn't really lookin' to take a dip!" The water was COLD, and Wash's teeth were already chattering.

Samuel uncrossed his arms. "Cool, my favourite things, calamari and a long walk on the beach." With that sassy remark, he kicked the rest of the tentacle off Wash before returning to his observational post. He made a little arm motion indicating wash should continue. "Please tell me you can do better than that."

Wash let out an unenthusiastic groan, but returned to the task of hacking away at the gross, rubbery limb, doing his best to dodge it's wild and mostly blind lunges.

After a while, it stopped moving. At this point Wash was covered in slimy goop.

Sam gave him a critical once over. "By the way, this isn't a date."

"Dude, just shut up already."

Immersed in trying to decipher the information packets handed out, Reine had tuned out of most of the ongoing chatter until a flurry of movement caught her attention. For some reason or other, people were starting to leave, some a little more quickly than others, but they were all headed in the same direction. Stuffing the documents away in the pocket of her oversized sweater, she followed the crowd at a comfortable jog.

It wasn't until they reached the beach that the mini-hunter started to consider that this might not.. be.. well, safe. Mark's words did nothing to assuage the sinking feeling in her stomach, either. Venturing out into the fog, Reine gripped the lightflares and bandaid tightly, determined not to lose them. It seemed logical enough to keep walking in a straight line, but logic lost out to creeping doubt the further she moved away from the glowing blue marker.

By the twentieth step it was out of sight, and the small hunter forced herself to think that that meant she was going in the Right direction, wherever that was.

A loud CRACK cut through the eerie silence, far too close for comfort, followed by a shrill squeak she realised was her own. Had Mark not been kidding about landmines? Did landmines even sound like that? Crouched on the ground, quaking in fear, Reine felt something brush past her. Not a landmine. Every instinct screamed at her to run.

Sprinting across sand was tough, especially if you couldn't see where you were going until it was a bit too late. Reine collided headfirst into something else, with a solid thump, falling over again into the sand.

"Wanna look where you're going MAYBE," the thing grumbled, and Reine blinked.

It was wearing a sign that, quite helpfully, said PERSON.

"Uh," she grimaced - "..sorry?"

PERSON made a non-committal grunt, eyeing her somewhat scornfully as she picked herself up off the ground.

"I don't suppose you know where the target is?"

"Secrets don't come free, OKAY." PERSON uncrossed his arms, and gestured at her supplies. "Gimme one of those."

One - two - s**t, she'd somehow lost one of her lightflares in the kerfuffle from before. Reine bit her lip, considering. Two out of three didn't seem like such a bad thing, but having only one left.. well.. she supposed they were intended to be used anyway.

"Okay..." Tentatively she held out the lightflare, and PERSON grabbed it, then handed her a key. He jabbed a finger somewhere out into the fog.

"There."

"Wow, thanks. Can I get my money back?"

"No."

Pulling a face at PERSON, Reine stalked off into the fog, fingers curled tightly around the key. At least a key seemed like a potentially important thing to have..

Roll 4: Your character runs into a Oz (one of the Death Hunters). He's wearing a sign around his neck that says "PERSON". You can try asking him questions.

It was entirely possible that PERSON had actually been trying to help, because it didn't take her all that long after all to find the target marker .. and apparently also a target Mark.

"Um, okay, sure.." Taking the "laptop", Reine turned around obediently and walked back out of the cave, wondering if it was too much to hope that the return trip would be reasonably peaceful.

Roll 4: Your character finds a very large cave. Inside it is a blue marker. Mark somehow has managed to find his way to this cave, holding a "laptop" made of styrofoam. "Cool, so I got the super secret data stuff," Mark said in an exaggerated voice. "It's really secret and would be a shame if oh, I dunno it broke or something. Anyway, you're going to hold it and I'm going to follow you. God, it's so freaking cold, let's just finish this already." (Continue to step 3)

It did turn out to be wishful thinking after all. If anything, the return trip was even more painful, with Mark blabbering away about something and Reine nodding politely in return whenever he paused.

He didn't even stop talking when a giant shadowy thing crashed down on the beach in front of them, knocking Reine off her feet and wiggling threateningly.

"Um, Mark?"

The tentacle-shaped monster reared up ahead of them, and Reine, still dutifully clutching the styrofoam "laptop", crawled across the sand to crouch behind the senior hunter. What was she even supposed to do?!

'Tear it to pieces,' the small voice in her head whispered.

"Yeah, like how?!" Hands shaky, she rummaged around for the last remaining lightflare, and threw it at the monster with as much strength as she could summon. It exploded, and the creature recoiled.

'Like this!'

A sword materialised in her hand, heavy but oddly comfortable, inspiring a sudden rush of reckless courage. Without thinking too much, Reine dashed forwards and slashed at the creature.

Caught up in the excitement, Reine completely forgot to defend herself, and the tentacle thwacked her solidly on the head. With a dramatic sigh, Mark stepped forwards to attack the monster, defeating it in one hit.

wow. Despite all his senseless ranting, maybe Mark was kind of cool after all.

"Okay can we just get back now, it's freezing out here, seriously."

"Yes, sir!"

Rolling a 4: Mark will finally decide that he should probably help you and attack because he's freezing. He does -10 damage.
