In which a young boy is helped by a travelling knight

(tw: a child gets hurt badly, for anyone reading who has a hard time with imagery)

A troll his age shouldn't have blubbered as loud or as hard as he did. By now, a kid in his situation should be swearing, or rationally thinking of a plan. Yet here he was, four and a half sweeps old, sobbing like he was a big, blubbery wriggler again.

"Ommy! Ommy help! Ommy!"

Fat brown tears rolled down his face as he shivvered, staring at the trap clamped tight around-- or maybe it was through, the palm of his hand. There was just too much blood to be able to tell.

Thats what Mahmud got for crawling around in a junkyard; one moment he had been digging through the piles for more parts. Next thing he knew was blinding pain, as a very large trap clamped down. Oh god. Was he going to have to cut off the limb? It was just like the stories, wasn't it. He was going to lose his hand. Or he was going to die out here in the middle of a junk yard, with Harpommy cooing desperately as she pulled at the trap with two feet to no avail.

This is why he didn't like coming to the city: somehow, someway, a troll is going to hurt you.

For some time, they were there trying fruitlessly to get rid of the trap. Then suddenly, his Ommy perked her head up and began to coo, hopping away. "O-Ommy! Ommy no!" Urk, he really wasn't feeling well now. Yet instead of comforting him, the large harpy instead hopped away and around the corner, continuing to coo. Was she looking for help? Did she find someone? Mahmud simultaneously did and didn't care anymore, felt nauseous and tired, scared and woozy.

Keionx crept around the junkyard, glancing occasionally at the hustle and bustle of space ladder-fuelled Chittentown. Occasionally, she ducked behind a piece of junk and quietly waited for an onlooker to pass by the imposing fence, or for the caretaker to growl and grumble out of spongeclot and sightstalk-shot. Occasionally, too, she dodged traps, or disabled them for scrap and components.

She wasn't a part of the Initiative's... initiative... here, but she knew that others were. That made it more important - heroic even - in her mind to keep up the usual activities of the Initiative that she had taken on for herself: clearing routes, gathering supplies, scouting, guarding... they were all still very important.

Still, she'd wanted to see a little of what was going on, which was why she was stuffing junkyard junk into a sack and ogling the chaos at it's edge. It was interesting to see, but it reinforced her opinion that it really wasn't her thing.

She had just decided to look over her haul and contemplate leaving the junkyard when an odd, frantic cooing sound drew her attention, and a white, birdy, troll-torsoed beast came out from behind a mountain of stacked trash and metal. She drew her sword, wary as it hopped nearer. "Back off." She said, uncertain of it's motives. One never knew with beasts.

But there was a light of desperation in it's eyes. Though it shied from her raised blade, it (she, it had a female torso, after all) hopped from talon to talon, fluttering it's wings in distress. "What is it?" she asked, relaxing her stance. Her sword remained out - there was a chance it might be needed, still.

She was met with cooing that could have been relieved, and the creature began to hop off, fluttering over the junk piles. "Wait!" she called to it. She could keep up, fit as she was, but it was best to go slowly here, lest she be trapped by the junkyard custodian. That was not a troll to cross, and if she was forced to encounter him, she wanted all limbs and her blade handy. The creature only cooed more insistently, and Keionx had to settle for a careful jog and climb through the rubble.

Whimpering and soft gasps caught her attention in the otherwise echoing silence of the junkyard. Her nerves jittered on high alert as she climbed - someone was in distress, but who? From what?

It was a brownblood she didn't know, but that didn't matter to her. She sheathed her sword and walked towards him with her hands outstretched, placting, assessing. He appeared to have gotten himself in trouble... in a lot of trouble. Those damn traps... she thought to herself, cursing the curmudgeonly custodean.

"Calm, calm..." she said soothingly, experience with many 'damsels in distress' and trapped animals had taught her calm and caution. The trapped often fought back. "I'm here to help thee..."

Someone's voice was calling out to him, someone not his mother, and it scared Mahmud. After having his hand bore through by someone's spikes? The little boy was reasonably afraid of strangers. Yet at the same time... he was not as stupid as he felt at that moment. Trolls had thumbs, Harpommy did not. If he was going to get help... it'd have to be from someone else.

So when the woman came closer, sword put away, saying she was here to help him... what choice did Mahmud really have? Either he died because she was lying, died because of blood loss, or lived by taking a chance. Given that he had been lucky with the past few trolls that came his way...

With very little control over the level of shaking he was doing, Mahmud slid his hand closer to the other troll and gave a big whimper. Ouch ouch ouch ouch.

Silently, he hoped to whatever higher powers were out there that this person wasn't here to hurt him because the pain was starting to become unbearable.

"P-please..."

"Coo!" As if on queue, the large bird-woman gave a gentle nudge of her head to Keionx and then started towards her son. After cooing a couple more times, Harpommy then nestled beside her child and shielded him with a wing, looking up to the knight. "Coo? Coo coo."

Well, he wasn't outright trying to defend himself against her, and he had said please. He seemed distraught, his lusus seemed distraught, and that horrible caretaker would probably come this way eventually. There was only one course of action for Keionx, and she took it willingly. Without a moments more thought, she kneeled beside the child, inspecting the injured hand. Yes - she knew this trap. He was lucky that it hadn't hit somewhere else.

Luck, of course, being relative, after all - it was a painful looking injury and, had it been anywhere but his hand, he would have been able to get it off with some effort. Had it been anywhere else, though, the trap would have closed on more flesh, and caused more bleeding.

"Hold still..." she said, fingers staining a few shades darker than her own blood color as she fiddled with the trap's latch. Click. "All right, thou art almost out..." she said, as she positioned her hands properly on the trap. Her generous muscles bulged as she pulled at it, forcing it's jaws open. Finally, with a click, it reset, opening and releasing it's former prize. Immediately as it fell, Keionx jammed a piece of trash in it to trigger it and keep it closed and harmless.

"There." she said, pleased at how the rescue was going so far. But that caretaker might well make his rounds again soon, and he was a danger... another danger to protect this child from, if need be. "Canst thou move? Or walk?"

Mahmud yanked his hand back as soon as he could and watched as the trap was shut off to the side, scrambling backwards to his mother. Helpful or not, she was still a stranger and he wasn't willing to be too risky with her. Sort of. He wasn't willing, but he may have to. His head was feeling woozy, and Harpommy wasn't going anywhere for some reason. "Mm.... mmmfine." Shakily he stood to show his rescuer that he was indeed able to stand. I can walk... I think."

"Coo!" He didn't have to say anything to his mother; the troll-bird hybrid lusus nuzzled her son onto her back and hopped over to Keionx.

"W-we'll... mom do we have to?"
"COO."
"Ugh... fine um... do you know the way out, lady? Ommy's got me..."

With a rather ungraceful shift, Harpommy jossled her son around until he finally gave in. "F-FINE FINE... Th-thank you... for helping me..." He couldn't bring himself to stare at his savior in the eye. Instead he looked away towards the ground, head bowed, trying to gaze any direction but at her. Harpommy seemed really quick to trust, but Mahmud still wasn't sure about Keionx. Her appearance was far too convenient.

"I don't feel so good though..." Yeah no, his wound hurt like crazy and his head was starting to pound. Most of all, whenever he'd try and get a look at it he'd start to feel awfully woozy. After another stare the boy turned his head off his mother and dry heaved, shivvering. Was he going to lose his hand? Was he really down to having to trust this stranger to save him? It sucked, plain and simple, for Mahmud.

Keionx watched him stagger upright, rising from her crouch as his lusus took charge. Her hands, she realized belatedly, were now stained with a blood several shades off of her own, slick with the wetness of it. She wiped them against her tunic and hoped that the black would absorb the pigments.

"Twas my honor and duty to aid thee." she said, bowing. Maybe she was overdoing it, but it felt right to her. Gratitude was one of the many things that separated a hero from an honorless theif. For a hero, such gratitude was not always forthcoming. So, when it manifested, it deserved to be rewarded.

She straightened, appraising the wound, the lusus, the child she had just saved. She turned, beckoning. "We need to get thee out of here, and tend to thy wounds." she said, her tone brisk as she scanned the junkyard for movement. The caretaker and his traps were threats, and now that she had rescued this troll, she was obligated to see him to safety.

"Coo! Coo coo!" Harpommy needed no further word; the moment the other troll suggested moving outwards, the lusus began to hop a different direction, pausing once in a while to let Keionx catch up. They weaved in and out of different piles of junk, sometimes stopping to catch their bearings. Finally, the bird woman and her charge came to a hole in the fence. "Coo!" Without further word Mahmud crawled off his mommy's back and pulled back on the broken metal with his good hand. Since Harpommy lacked hands, he had been the one to let them in this way before. However well... it took far more strength to do it with one hand than both.

Once all three had left the junkyard, the little boy sauntered back to his mother and stared at Keionx. "F-first aid?"

The words had barely left his lips before angry shouting could be heard in the distance. "Is that him?! The Junkyard guy?" A rhetorical question; who else would be shouting from the direction they just came from, be angry enough to shout, and most of all... would shout when there's a crazy junkyard owner nearby somewhere?! Only the owner himself.

Harpommy nudged at her child, and then cooed at the knight with great urgency. They needed to go, and fast.

WOW DRAC WOW *bonks self*

"Yes, I..." she had a rudimentary first aid kit with her that would do the trick (though it was rough and mainly for herself, but what better use was there than to help another? Frankly, Keionx could think of nothing better.) She tensed, nearly drawing her sword at the sound.

"I do believest it to be so..." she said, gritting her teeth. She was ready for a fight, if it came to that. However... she glanced at the bird-ish lusus out of the corner of her eye... would it not reduce the overall amount of suffering? Would it not be more heroic to take the young troll out of danger and take care of him?

She resheathed her sword. "Yes - let us hurry." she said, "Safety is near - do not fret." she said, taking a winding route to a sand-touched alleyway she remembered from the Drought, away from prying eyes and fearsome foes. There, she brought out her first aid kit. "Allow me to take a look, and escort thee home?"
