User ImageVikings, Eli had found, were not usually all that exciting. Most of the time it was a matter of moving at a steady pace with the band until they caught up with scouts. Sometimes the band remained in one place while multiple scouts were sent out to determine the best direction to go next, or while some hunting was done.

Eli got sent hunting a lot, and not because she was good at it. In fact, she was mediocre at best, given she had been raised in a pride where thralls did the hunting and freeborn selected their meals from whatever the thralls returned with. No. The reason Eli was sent hunting so much was because she hated to be sent hunting while on a viking, as she firmly believed the task fell to her due to her sex, rather than any sensible reason, like the creative swearing she did when she got the assignment.

At any rate, Eli was hunting on her own and expected to bring down something of a size to feed herself and six other lions. She'd be expected to drag it back to them, too. Life was, she reflected with a long-suffering sigh, deeply unfair.

She really is a reaver, just waiting on her cert.

The single, rogue lion didn't consider his existence a lonely one, had never fancied himself as the kind of fellow who would join a pride. He had no one else to provide for but himself. That probably contributed also to why he had never settled down with a mate. He loved females, but never could pretend to be something he wasn't and take advantage of them. So it was good that he didn't have a hard time disappointing others.

It was the most difficult to disappoint himself. Geschenk felt no shame as he munched happily on a water buffalo that had just been taken down by a couple of hyenas. He had charged in just after the beast took its last breaths and scared the hunters off. They cursed him, but by the fact that they backed off, he knew it was only the two of them, and that he could easily manage them if threatened.

He licked his chops contentedly. Oh yes, single life was the life for him. Though he never hated some pleasant company.

Eli huffed. This was ridiculous. She knew she'd been sent out to hunt just because her captain thought it was funny to see her get mad about it, but she still couldn't return without anything to show for it, no matter how absurd the expectations laid on her. So she had to keep hunting, futile though she knew it to be.

In fact, the only scent she had picked up was the scent of several hyenas. But they also smelled like blood. Maybe they'd recently made a kill. Something she could scavenge and bring back to the band, claiming it as her own. That would be expedient, assuming there was anything left for her to make use of. Only one way to find out!

The splotch-patterned lioness set off, following the hyenas' path in reverse, in the direction she hoped to find the remains of their kill. Her hopes sank as she drew close enough to smell a lion nearby. No doubt, he'd found the kill first. She'd have to scare him off. Wouldn't that be fun.

Eli leapt forward, her gait confident and her teeth bared. "Time for you to leave."

Eli is probably not very intimidating, but she tries.

Geschenk's ears turned over in the direction of the voice.

"Hmm?"

He turned the rest of his head to greet the voice. Oh, it was a female. And she was coming at him with a lot of attitude. She wasn't an especially large lioness, and self-assured fella that he was, he wasn't threatened. He rose into a sitting position, and from the other side of the kill, he gave her a thorough up-and-down. She was pretty cute, but that wasn't enough to chase him off of a great meal like this. He took a big paw and wiped the blood off of his mouth.

"I don't think so, but you could join me, if you wish."

He pondered why she was trying to make him leave. There was plenty for the two of them to share. Did she have cubs she needed to feed? Or was she part of a pride and she was supposed to bring something back to them? She would have an awful lot of trouble with a carcass as big as this, if that was the case. If so, then he was only doing her a favor by making it lighter.

She'd tried to scare him off. It hadn't worked. Oh well.

At least, that was what Eli intended to say if anyone in the band asked. And then she'd point out that one inexperienced female was hardly going to intimidate anyone on her own, even a Stormborn, and insist that next time she be sent hunting with a partner. She was also going to say that instead of just one lion, there had been three, because that would make her point a lot better.

Her mind made up, Eli gave a mental shrug. She saw no reason she shouldn't eat, just because she'd made the decision not to return to the band with a kill. And since he was offering to share...why shouldn't she take him up on it?

"No right-minded lion turns down food," she remarked, coming closer. Her manner had relaxed significantly in the past few moments, since determining that this would not be a violent encounter.

"Who should I be thanking?" she asked.

He grinned and nodded.

"Exactly, smart gal." He purred it out while he was chomping down on some meat. He roared and stretched out, making himself comfortable.

"I'm Geschenk." Honestly he should have told her that was the hyenas he chased off who she should be thanking, but that was unflattering and not what he might hoping to achieve.

"And who might I thank for the company?" He raised his eyebrows and thumped his tail on the ground. He decided he quite liked her. Her braid, her eyes, how they both had similar striping. He had more, but that didn't mean he was any better, though. The more he thought of it, the better this buffalo tasted with some company.

"Geschenk," Eli repeated. It had a somewhat familiar sound to it. Not quite the same as the names used in the Stormborn, those based in the pride's language, but close. She wondered if there was a connection somewhere, or if it was just coincidence, but wasn't curious enough to follow up on the thought.

She had grinned quickly at Geschenk's purred reply, though the grin became somewhat forced when he roared. She was perfectly accustomed to lions roaring, but generally they were Stormborn, and just being loud. With this strange lion, she couldn't be certain what he was thinking. It stood to reason, though, that he wasn't going to attack her while his mouth was full of food and he was lying down.

"I'm Elisef Halvarsdottir," she introduced herself, using the full form of her name that included the bare minimum of her lineage by habit more than anything else. "Eli is fine though."

She moved closer, trying not to look obviously wary as she approached the kill, but aware that all this could still be a trap. It was something a lion from her pride might do, actually, if he was looking to capture a thrall easily. Might even be a tactic she, herself, could try, assuming she ever managed to kill something on her own. When he didn't spring to his feet and attack, she mimicked his ease and settled down to join him in eating.

"Your mate won't be irritated that you took time to eat and shared your kill, will they?" she asked, glancing slantwise at Geschenk to check him out in a manner that was probably less subtle than she'd hoped. "I wouldn't want you to get in trouble for your generosity."

I am so sorry. I lost this RP's link. Much sorry. Very guilt.
