[METAPLOT] Quelling the Fire (Squires' Finale - Part 2)

Katya nodded to Eligor at his thankful words, and was rewarded with the sight of one of his spells striking home with painful-looking results. She swayed to one side to avoid another attempt by the tainted rodent that had initially tried to launch itself at Eligor and threw another counterpunch at it, this time feeling something snap within its otherwise squishy body. For some reason, this made Katya wince. She had been practicing hand to hand combat with Lailah for some time now, and had never landed a hit quite like that. It both thrilled and shocked her to have had some measure of success with it.

As the creature slid across the floor, Katya eyed it keenly, ready to follow through. When it didn't move further, she returned her attention to the larger creatures at the centre of the battle. She gasped and launched herself into the air when she saw movement out of the corner of her vision, just in time to see the smaller of the two insectile beasts launch a savage claw attack on Alethea. Katya's response was immediate; from above she had a clear shot at the thing's unarmoured back and planted an arrow just behind its shoulder blades. It withdrew so quickly however that the little demon was left to wonder whether or not it had done much damage.

When the squires adjusted to the unusual combat style required against the beasts, they began landing hits on them. Genesis rushed the larger of the two and instructed the others to concentrate on wiping out the child first- a tactic that Katya could agree with. They were already threatened with encirclement from the small, rodent-like critters; they had to thin the enemy's number any way they could. Katya flew a tight circle in the enclosed space, looking for a ledge or a rafter, anything to cling to and fire down on the action below, as her usual swoop-and-fire tactics were denied to her in the somewhat tight space.

Everything had happened so fast. This was nothing like their training exercises. He'd tucked his staff into his arm for the merest of seconds to sign to Katya--"I can hold, but lost my sword"--when hell had broken loose. Dante scrambled back into his defensive position and took a quick survey of what was happening. A large Tainted creature was attacking them! Most of the others' attacks clanged right off of it. He looked at his staff with a wary eye. Best to just hold the flank, then, like Katya said.

Katya!

Where was she? Was she safe? He looked around for her wildly. There--unharmed, and rather a thing of beauty as she battled this evil. That's when the monster's paw (?) caught him. Reflexively he smacked it away with his staff before it could do too much damage, but he did get a nice couple of slices, not too deep, right in his side. Dammit.

Dante gripped his staff and prepared to wade into the fray, but behind the beast appeared...a bigger beast. Oh no. There always had to be a bigger beast. The pain and frustration fueled him to step forward, next to Lailah, who had just finished surveying the beast for any weak spots, it appeared. And her weapon clanged off its armor. He took a mighty swing at the weak spot of all creatures--its nose--and landed his staff straight on its softer-looking snoot.

The force of the attack from the nasty creature sent Althea forward, knocking Anguish from her hands. Her ranseur slid across the floor, just out of range. The hit stung her back, hitting where her left wing would have been. The flood of memories that hit made flashed in her mind, stirring up an already bubbling anger. The anger consumed her so bad, she didn't even stop to swoon at Eligor as he gave her attention.

She rose to her feet and stretched back, feeling every bit of that slice with every tiny twinge of muscle. With a glint in her eye, she lunged to the smaller beast, crying out "KALIMEL" and plunged her light sword into the vulnerable spot where Eligor's magic blast hit. The brilliant light and power bestowed upon the young angel by the Guardians burned through the carapace of the tainted beast.

Alethea whispered, "Galadmore" and her aegis formed on her left arm. She quickly moved back out of reach (she hoped) of the beast, holding her shield for protection.

Hissing and spitting, the smaller armored insectoid scrabbled away from attacks, while unleashing its own. It scored a couple of easy hits on Clarux and Dante, then missed Harveer as it was caught by Eligor's and Alethea's combination attack. A pain-filled screech of fury rent the air, sending the 'mamma' beast into a rage.

With a roar, she lashed out at the closest target, which was the Squires' standing tank, Genesis. Chitinous talons raked the air, fearing neither wood nor metal, and the great beast was on the move. It took a swipe at one of the ones attacking its baby, but missed the nimble red angel, Lailah. The multi-faceted eyes fixed on the mage that had started the combination attack that so hurt her baby, and with a roar, she lashed out and caught the demon mage with a heavy, sidelong blow.

Attacking Mama Beast

For a moment, Genesis stumbled as the swipe from the larger tainted beast gave a small cut on her arm. She stumbled more from surprise than anything else, but this was why she had tried to draw the beasts attention, to distract it from the others. Since the beast had attacked her, that meant she had succeeded at least for the most part. It hasn't been enough to fully draw its attention though, the creature had left her to protect the smaller one in the end. Genesis followed closely behind the larger beast.

As she pursued the larger beast, she took quick measure of the group. It seemed like they had finally found their footing, from what she could tell with a brief glance at the smaller creature. She took a deep breath, one filled with renewed hope, and swung her sword at the larger creature from behind, aiming for the more vulnerable spot, beneath its shell.

MISS!

The attack of the mother beast was terrifying, even from above and behind the front lines where Katya was fluttering. Genesis was the best suited of all the squires to take the punishment, but Katya winced sympathetically nonetheless.

When Katya could see that there was nothing along the walls or ceiling for her to grip to, from where she could continue her attack, she loosed another arrow at the smaller monster on the fly, despite the relatively narrow space (for flying anyway) making it difficult to actually do so.

The end result reflected this fact. Her arrow soared well wide of its mark, striking the cold flagstones and bouncing harmlessly into the shadows. Katya cursed loudly- again- and resigned herself to taking more stable shots from solid ground.

Encouraged by the successful combination attack with Alethea, Eligor felt a surge of hope. It'd started off a little rough, but the team was really coming together now and finding their stride! Just a bit of teamwork and they'd show these--

He'd let his attention lapse for just a second too long. The angry roar of the parent beast was quickly followed by a heavy blow that sent him reeling. His vision swam for a second and he thought he saw stars. That hurt, but he was also furious...at himself for not paying attention, at the others for letting the beast through the front lines, at the beast for existing...

She didn't like her baby being attacked? Too bad. In his fury, he looked up from his stagger and sent another magical burst in the baby beast's direction, but his attack swung wide and he realized he'd have to take a moment to aim as soon as his vision stopped swimming.

Well, her own efforts hadn't been very successful, but if she was keeping the thing distracted so that the others could hit it, then Lailah would take that as a success. As the angry parent beast's roar filled the air again, she was on alert. She dodged the thing's wild attack, but apparently she wasn't the primary target for the beast. It took only a passing swipe at her and rushed off, landing a staggering blow on Eligor instead.

Growling to herself, Lailah internally shifted targets. The smaller one was taking damage, but this large one was going to be a problem if Genesis couldn't keep it occupied by herself. After the mage went stumbling, Lailah launched herself at the creature while it was distracted, blades flashing as she found a gap in the beast's plating to strike a blow.

Dante let out a roar of pain and frustration as he was hit, again, by this foul creature. He didn't like fighting, he certainly didn't like being hurt, and he was tired of this whole encounter. The only thing he could do was to do his part to end it. The beast didn't seem to like being hit on the face, so he did it again. He swung his staff horizontally and caught the chittering bug right in its jaw, if that's what it even was. Wretched beast.

He took another glance around at his teammates. He was the best healer, after all. Everyone seemed a little beat up, like him, but nobody looked in need of immediate attention for the moment. Better yet, nobody looked like they needed cleansing. He turned his attention back to the smaller insect and took a defensive position next to Lailah again.

Attempting attack on Baby? Beast! Enemy Dodged!

Harveer was having a hell of a time trying to land a hit. Between dropping his weapon first and then having his shot miss again, a realization that he needed to have paid better attention in class was hitting him pretty hard in the face. Thankfully the other squires were there picking up the slack. The very thought of that made him so mad it wasn't funny.

The pale blue angel advanced on the smaller beast as it was moving towards Eligor. He took a swipe with one of his blades, and over extended his arm. No damage was done to Harveer himself, but he did manage to loose his balance and fall flat on his face. Pissed, he pushed himself off the ground in an attempt to go after the beast again.
