Lutrin always seemed to make the most amazing discoveries while hopping from rooftop to rooftop.
Stooping down where she had spotted a faint outline under the moonlight, Lutrin brushed aside some of the gravel that covered the hive's rooftop. There was not much of and and soon a metal plate with a handle appeared. Getting down on her hands and knees, she pressed a sponge clot against the metal. Very gently, she knocked. Hollow.
Sitting up, Lutrin grinned. Her intuition had not failed her. She had the sharpest lookstubs in all of Alternia. She glanced around to see if SugarDad had come back for her yet. There was no sign of him. She had time. With a little victory wiggle, Lutrin offered a prayer to the mirthful messiahs, and popped open the hatch. Silent, she slipped inside.
She landed on the floor in a crouch. It was dark inside, but not so dark that she could not see, even if it did take a moment for her eyes to adjust. Again, sharpest lookstubs in all of Alternia. Or maybe the glowiest in this case. As they did, Lutrin let out a whistle. She had found the motherload. If treasure troves could have mothers.
For a moment, she pondered the strangeness of the phrase. A moment later though, the thought went forgotten as she tossed herself into the pile of crinkly, sparkly, and shiny goodness.

Treasure troves could have mothers, as it turned out. Or, at the very least, this one very much did. As Lutrin threw herself onto a shining pile, there was a metallic scatter of sound as various items fell from their proper places. Across the room, a pair of pure white eyes opened. Etsali often came home through the roof entrance, so the thud of an entrance was hardly a new event, even if in retrospect it was a lighter sound than it had been in some time. But Etsali had also learned very quickly not to make a mess of the treasures that belonged solely to her lusus.
Keeper stood from where she had been dozing among her hoard and advanced on the pile where the disturbance had started, wings fluttering in agitation. It was a quick and easy process, confirming that this wasn't her troll, and once it had been done, the raccoon-dragon lowered her head and began to growl, teeth bared in pure threat. It had been a long time she'd last needed to fight something off of what was hers, but she'd had more than enough time since then to recover completely.
This little troll didn't stand a chance.

Perched at the top of the pile, Lutrin had been about to throw herself down the mountain when she heard a sound that made her hesitate. It sounded almost like... a growl. Hunkering down, she peered through the gloom. Her pupils dilated. “Hello?” she asked, probing the darkness. Her pump biscuit beat fast.
Suddenly she saw it: an enormous lusus, stalking towards her with its teeth bared. Lutrin quailed. SugarDad would still be looking for her outside. Even if he could have been with her, there would have been nothing he could have done. He would have told her to run. So, run Lutrin did.
She stumbled down the mountain of treasure, triggering a small avalanche under her feet. Wrappers, tiny trinkets, and chips of metal went everywhere. She threw her arms out for balance. It was only thanks to sweeps of practise that she managed to keep herself upright. As soon as she reached the floor, Lutrin tore across the room to scamper up one of the shelves. At the very top, she huddled down and pressed herself flat against the wall. A few pieces of treasure still clenched in her fists, she readied them for throwing.

If Lutrin's retreat had caused only a small avalanche, Keeper's immediate pursuit was an eruption of sound and motion. The lusus slammed through with no thought of anything but capturing the intruder. Another time she might have worried for the placement of her treasures, but that had already been compromised. Now her collection crashed and clattered across the floor, and there was a loud thud as she slammed into the shelf the little thief had taken refuge on. But no matter how she snapped and snarled at the troll, she couldn't seem to get her fangs into her.
The moonlight shining through the trap door, the only real source of light in the room save for the glimmer of hanging treasures that had half caught it, suddenly went dark. "Keeper?" There was a soft thud as her boots hit the floor, but otherwise Etsali was silent for the next moment, crouched where she'd landed. She'd known something was off the moment she'd seen the door opened, and now that she was inside she immediately knew that something was very wrong. Keeper would never have allowed this mess.
The lusus swiped at Lutrin again, her snarl trailing off into a chattering that had Etsali's lips spreading to bare teeth to match. "Hey, do you know," the orangeblood started conversationally as she pulled herself to her feet and began to approach the shelves herself with careful steps. "There's really only one kind of thief me and Keeper here don't like." Her eyes were still adjusting, so she couldn't make out entirely who she was talking to, but it was clear where they were. They'd have to be small to fit up there, and fast to get there before Keeper got to them. Interesting.
"You wanna take a guess what kind?"

Etsali blinked, her head tilting, and then she laughed. With that voice and the size they'd have to be to stay up there away from Keeper's claws, there was no way that wasn't some kid. One who got themselves into other people's houses and then babbled out answers to stall for time the same way she always had. The thief's grin eased into something more friendly, though in this darkness maybe that wouldn't make a difference, and her hand lifted away from the pouch at her side.
"Nah, good guess though." Keeper made another swipe, gave a frustrated huff that drew Etsali's eyes back to her for a moment. "I was going to give you another shot, but Keeper here wants me to get to the point." She glanced back, spread her hands out to reference the room around them. "It's the kind that steals from us. What do you have to say about that?"

“Oh! Ooooooh!” Lutrin squirmed inside her protective nook. She looked guiltily down at her hands, in which she clenched a fistful of riches from the hive's treasure trove. Without a second thought, she rolled them off the shelf, down towards the one called Keeper. Time to take action.
“Me? Steal from you?” Lutrin asked with pretend indignation. She began to crawl forward towards the edge of the shelf. When at last she wiggled free, she dropped to the floor, landing boldly beside the lusus. “I would never do such a thing,” she proclaimed. “In fact, I came here to pay tribute. One sec.”
Holding up one finger to indicate that the lusus and her charge should wait, Lutrin reached around with her other hand into her back pocket. Her tongue poked up out of her mouth, as she rummaged around. At last she came up with something she hoped was satisfactory.
“BEHOLD! A mysterious and oh-so-powerful dipping handle!” With much showmanship she brandished an ordinary tin spork.

Good move, Etsali caught herself thinking, shoulders shaking with a suppressed laugh. Keeper startled as the first of the stolen trinkets tumbled over her head, but then began to catch as many of them as she could, pawing over them and depositing them on the floor nearby in quick movements. And then the kid wiggled free of her hiding spot and dropped to the floor after them. Etsali's eyebrows lifted. Keeper whirled to face her, teeth bared and growling lowly.
And the kid just kept searching in her pockets, never mind all the fangs waiting just on the other side of that finger. Etsali lifted a hand to her mouth, struggling now not to laugh out loud. It wouldn't do to interrupt the moment. There was another pause after the offering was found and theatrically presented, but gradually the lusus stopped growling. Within the blink of an eye she'd snapped out a paw to take the spork and then moved away, back towards the center of the room where the moonlight still shone brightest. She tested the spork in that light, considering, and then chattered approvingly.
Etsali let out that laugh, moving over to ruffle the kid's hair and then nudge her towards the doorway that led to the stairs down. "I like your style, kid. Let's get you out of here, though. That's not going to work every time."
