User ImageDeep breath in.
Deep breath out.

Golden eyes closed as a dark-colored stallion calmed himself. Around him, the forest seemed to breathe with life, it's dark floor marred by patches of warm, golden sunlight that set fire to the bright markings on his hide. A breeze lifted the hair on his spine and he shivered, goose-flesh rising under his short fur.

Deep breath in.
Deep breath out.

The soil underfoot was damp from recent rain and each small movement his paws made seemed to release the odor of balmy earth and loamy ground. He sniffed and then let out a snort that seemed ear-shattering in the quiet. The stallion sighed, and opened his eyes, wings flaring outward as he did so. The large appendages stretched, feathers spreading like a fan. He bent them this way and that way, wincing as a sore muscle complained at his movement. It was not easy to fly in the rain, wet feathers became bricks, and a heavy body became a boulder to lift. Never again.

...Who was he kidding?

Setareh snorted at his own thought process. One of his favorite pastimes was flying in the rain. Way up high, until the ground look absurdly small beneath him. It was a fool's game to fly in the rain, but he was unafraid. What did he have to live for, after all?

From the very first moment he stepped out of his basket, he was shunned, granted the title "monster" by his very own mother. He was pawed, abnormal, with sharp teeth and claws that were for killing. And so he was kicked - literally - from everything he knew. His family wanted nothing to do with him, a monster, a meat eater. They were old-fashioned and stuck to the "true Angeni ways". Setareh thought it was complete nonsense, even to this day.
Shaking his wings, the stallion grimaced, and more delicately folded them to his side. Breathing in, he noted the scents of others who had passed this area after the rain. Some were fragrant as flowers - obviously a feminine scent. Others held a wretched sort of scent - the smell he associated with walkers and their ilk, a deadly sort. And yet... he was in near the same category as those beings. Those things. He looked down at his paws and dug his golden claws into the dark soil, as if he could hide them from sight. From his own sight. From the world's sight. But the mood passed as quickly as it came, and he let out an exasperated sigh.

In a single motion of graceless energy, the stallion threw his body to the ground, laying among the flowers, grass and churned dirt in one giant heap of dark blue and gold. His wings stretched outward and laid upon the ground, soaking in the rays of sunlight that streamed through the milky white clouds that tried to cover the sun. He lowered his head to his paws and looked up at the sky, watching the weak cloud cover sweep past above, bits of blue peeking through. His mood was edgy, as it was when he thought of what he was, but in time, he knew it would pass as it always did, and he'd show a weak smile, and try to move on.

Perhaps a nap would bolster a better attitude....

User Image They day had been shaping up to be lovely. A mingling of friends and their families, stepping out as a group to enjoy the smell of the fresh earth after rain. Or, with this temperature, prematurely melted snow; but that was really all about semantics. Echo, Selene, Resonance, Ishtar, Yue Shuang, and Shahar, all stepping out for a stroll as free, independent mares who didn't need no stallion. Especially one as overprotective as Khalon, who had been fretting left and right since some off marks had been found on their borders weeks ago. WEEKS ago. So this day should have been nothing less than perfect. And nothing less than perfectly safe, as well.

It wasn't.

The stallion that had come upon them had been as brown as the dirt itself, thin and ragged and surprisingly quick. He had stumbled forward, weary, and mares familiar with hunger but unfamiliar with predators of their own kind offered him a rest and company. He had struck quickly- almost too quickly. Echo had barely dodged his sharp teeth, her shriek of outrage something that none of them had heard from her throat. Resonance and Yue, their warriors, their daughters, had been the quickest to react, pressing an assault and ordering Echo and their daughters away.

Selene had stared, not sure what to do. Useless. Resonance had broken off before Yue, not having wings to escape once the fight was over. When those blazing eyes had turned on Selene at last, still scampering about as a useless distraction, she had done what flutters did best. Shrank. Small and afraid, she had fled. Leaving her daughter behind! What a terrible mother she was. Anxious and full of self-recrimination, she still didn't creep back to where the combat had been. She made her safety known, and then went and hid in melodramatic shame.

That, then, was where the story would begin.

Buried small and secure in flowers and grasses, only a bit larger than a butterfly, the fluttercorn rested, shaking, discombobulated by the unexpected downward turn of her pleasant afternoon. Honestly, it wasn't supposed to have been anything like this and she didn't like it at all. She liked it even less when the shadow fell over her, and then a large, dark body crashed down near to her. Instinct choked her shriek, at least long enough for her to realize it was a blue head, not a brown one, and that this stallion was winged, with markings that blazed like the sun.

“Don't you know it is rude to try and crush a lady?” she asked after a moment, not moving from her hiding place. “Especially on such a pretty day?”

Heart attack was an understatement.
Setareh scrambled up into a sitting position, his heart pounding a staccato beat in his chest that even the worst hearing would likely pick up. Gold eyes swept the area, narrowing at having been spied on.

His paws dug deep into the soil, and he let out a deep-gutted growl.

"Who is there?" He spoke, his voice ragged with confusion and a touch of irritation, his eyes continuing to rove the area for the voice's source.

His wings spread out, casting shadows all around him - perhaps his wings would make him larger-looking than he was.

"I...I would never crush a lady... Beauty is meant to be beheld and enjoyed, not.... crushed?"

He realized this was such a peculiar question. How would he crush someone? He looked toward the ground and took in what was there - as if there could possibly be anything - but all he was was dark grass, small flowers, rocks and dirt.

"Where are you, lovely voice? And why do I feel like I'm being spied on?"

Selene eyed the male creature with a caution born of what she considered a near-death experience. Not normally this cautious, her only excuse for hunkering down in the grass and peering out with silver eyes was fear and, well, caution. Not that that made any sense to her. But she blamed maturity. Or her natural less-mature-ity being impacted by-

Alright, now she was going about in circles that made absolutely no sense, and the way that the plant she was hiding behind was vibrating, she probably had a good guess that it wasn't the wind making it shake!

"You are being spied on," she informed him pertly, trying to reign in her wild emotions. Yue! Echo! Her friends! Had they all made it away safely? Was her daughter still being chased by that... beast?? And that dragged her back to the present, hunkered down and scowling at a stallion far larger than her on a good day. And today had been not good.

Somehow, she didn't think the skinwalker would flirt with her. Didn't the stories all say they only wanted to eat you and kill you, sometimes in that order? But was it flirting if it was only a compliment on her voice? And why was she even thinking about this?! Selene had to focus.

Oh, Tehya had always been the one to handle mature situations. Selene was useless at being scared.

"My name is Selene," she said at last. "I'm hiding."
