The coat, with its hood and gold trim and shining scythes, was really cool. It was well made and the right kind of dramatic for making an entrance. If it'd been before, Creedence would have gotten into character in a matter if seconds just putting it on. Here, on the training grounds during a miserable drizzle that had most hunters off the training fields, she just felt awkward and hoped the few that had stuck around were too into their work to notice her.

She didn't have a character to get into and maybe that was the problem despite Evanessa's insistence that her character was that of lowborn but faithful servant. Creedence couldn't even be mad about it, all the bathroom duty didn't exactly argue against the weapon anyway.

The weight of the dagger with its live blade and innate danger was nothing like the foam and plastic she was used to, but it wasn't like she'd never sparred. She was familiar with this stuff but...

Not with the sort of people and place where it was real and their job.

The trainee aimed her dagger at the dummy's kidney and immediately felt horrifically self conscious.

It wasn't like she needed to be good at this to clean a bathroom or a pet cage.

A little light drizzle might have been enough to chase away some of the hunters on the island, but not the hardcore Suns. Certainly not a certain combat trainer who happened to be patrolling around the edge of the field. She'd made it habit, when not training herself, to make at least one circle of the field, looking for anyone that might need a hand. It was usually hit or miss, whether or not she stuck around, but today seemed promising.

Hood up, Peyton lingered on the edge of the field like some sort of dainty gargoyle. Perched on the bench of a picnic table, elbows on her knees, she had her chin resting on laced fingers as she watched the other girl assault the dummie's poor kidneys.

It wasn't someone she knew, but considering how large the influx of newbies was lately that really wasn't surprising.

After a long moment, and a few more stabs, the small Sun hopped off the bench and started walking over, calling out to the other girl. "Hey, you look like you could use a live opponent."

The comment alone had Creedence on the defensive. What was that supposed to mean? When the small figure came close enough, unhappy recognition seeped in. It was one of those people. The ones who talked like she should be grateful for what she was thrown here. Could be worse, right?

Whatever.

She didn't want people to see her mess up on the fields and look stupid, but it'd be even worse to run away. It'd be so immensely uncool, even Nessa was making disapproving sniffy sounds at the though of it. Adjusting her fingers around the dagger's handle, she casually jerked her chin in agreement.

"Sure, cool."

Peyton was one of those people, because she'd seen hell, lived through it, survived it. She knew what it was like to have nothing, to be at rock bottom, and she knew how to appreciate what she had. It was a lesson she'd learned even before Deus. It was a lesson everyone on the island learned eventually, given time. A few missions, a few nightmarish encounters, and the little things in life took on a whole new level of importance.

Whatever this trainee's opinion of her might be, the Sun smiled as she drew closer, arms unfolded so hands could swing at her sides. A flick of pale eyes took in the dagger. Briefly she considered entering this match unarmed. If gave her opponent a bit of an edge, evened things out a bit, but it was hard to say no to a chance to cross dagger with dagger.

"So." Warrick flashed into life with a flare of red, and small fingers curled tightly around the ringed hilts. "You have a name?"

"I'm Peyton." Though Creedance had probably figured that out already. "Peyton Creedy, Sun hunter. Combat training specialist."

She sank into an familiar, easy crouch, daggers up and ready.

She swung, missed wildly, and then shrugged in irritation. "Yeah, I do," Creedence answered, face flushing in embarrassment.

It would have been easy to bait her, so so easy, but Peyton resisted. She had no reason to pick at this girl, and the irritation she was showing probably had more to do with herself than in Peyton herself.

Probably.

"Gunna share it? Or you gunna make me work for it?"

"Whatever," came the trainee's mumbled warcry. This time she moved without much thought, body going through a half familiar motion toward Peyton's neck, only to be met and blocked thoroughly by the other's weapon.

"It doesn't matter." Or more, it mattered too much. It was embarrassing, to not be any good at something in front of some stranger who'd already dismissed you.

"Of course it matters." It was all very familiar, and maybe that was why Peyton couldn't stop smiling, bright and warm with amusement. "Why wouldn't it?" As of yet her tone was nothing but friendly neutrality, conversational.

"Nice strength on that last one." It would have taken a nice bite from her shield if she hadn't gotten a dagger up to bloke it.

This wasn't a fair fight. Not even close. She wondered if her opponent would take offense if she desummoned Warrick and continued bare handed.

The compliment had the girl rolling her eyes. She wouldn't have even gotten one point off that one, no matter what the strength. Frustration mounting, she stabbed at Peyton's side, and the other girl didn't have to block it, because she'd already moved out of the way, the blade meeting nothing but air.

"This must be," she said, moving back, "so useful to everyone involved. Very karate kid, no wonder I'm cleaning so much." Her tone was caustic and brittle. Creedence knew the value of practice, even sparring like this, but sarcasm was forever the safest retreat from the mounting frustration and honest upset.

"Not everyone the organization finds is going to be combat ready right out the pod. Fewer still with any sort of combat weapons training. We all start somewhere, and work our way up." Peyton could preach patience, and practice, and any number of wonderful tidbits of advice, but she knew how very frustrating it could be.

So instead of trying to placate the other girl she let the smile fade, adopted a more serious stance.

"Breath," she'd advise, damn near ordering. Command riding her tone as she watched the other girl regain her footing. "Regain your focus." Twin daggers came up. "Look for an opening, then take it."

"Gosh," Creedence bit out, "breathe.Amazing."

There was no focus to regain. She'd only summoned her dagger a few times before, only dared looking stupid and out of place with it when the training grounds were nearly empty. She didn't know what she was doing, didn't know what she was doing here or anywhere on the island.

And it showed.

To someone near her own age, who knew what she was doing and was good at it, who wasn't hesitant to put those less assured in their place. To make fun of them.

Creedence went low, for Peyton's thigh, and the blade slipped past into air. She began to consider desummoning, telling the other girl that was good enough for the day and then finding a way to never be the same place in person again. Forever.

God, this was all so very familiar. It was almost funny in it's irony, but laughing would have just made it worst, and as amused as Peyton may have been, she wasn't purposefully trying to piss the other girl off.

Fury could be a powerful weapon. It could be the difference between a mediocre hit and a staggering one, if you knew how to wield it. Creedence didn't know yet, didn't have the training, and it showed. And that was fine, Pey didn't expect people to know what the hell they were doing right out the gate, but she expected them to learn. She expected them to be willing to listen, to absorb lessons, to pick up skills.

"Do you want to stay at this level, or do you want to get better?' It was her turn for impatience, voice leaking out through her teeth as she desummoned and went on the offensive.

She planted her foot, hips turning as she brought her other leg up in a fast kick that sent the tip of her boot whizzing past the taller girl's nose.

"You don't just suddenly know what you're doing, that shits earned. You learn through trial and error. You learn by checking your pride at the door and making mistakes." Fists up, she half turned, beckoning her forward again with a crook of her fingers. "Don't just blindly rush at me. Use your head."

It would be a relief, to know Peyton saw anger under the acerbic facade. Anger was so much more impressive than humiliated misery.

"It's like you think I've never seen a movie before." The other girl's message with that kick, the one that said I could have hurt you, look at my control, see what I've earned, was met with a roll of the eyes.

She managed to swipe Nessa across the smaller girl's forearm and felt no sense of victory. "So when are you going to tell me to find my center?"

"I hate to break it to you," she started, sucking a breath through her teeth as the dagger bit into her shield. "But this is not a movie." The sullen teen routine was getting tiresome. "If you can't fight, you will get yourself or someone else killed." It was harsh, it was blunt, but it was true. If Peyton had any inkling the girl was only attempting to train when she was sure there were no eyes watching she'd have been lecturing worse than she already was.

She pulled an arm back, aimed a punch for the the taller girl, but she wasn't serious, not yet. Her knuckles whistled past her shoulder.

"I dunno, is there anything at your center worth finding?" Head tilted, she leveled a cool gaze on the her. It was a dig, yes, but it wasn't out of malice.
