One fact Scout had been able to pick up on both through orientation was that Mists had to be versatile. They repeated it about twenty times that Mists were the junk drawer of Deus- they did a little bit of everything and specialized in nothing. She could get down with that- mechanics had to know a little bit of every part of the car, and be generally good at diagnosing problems.

One such skill she had to learn was the basics of first aid; apparently they had an incredibly busy "infirmary" here, and Mists were commonly expected to help with minor functions.

While Scout had been picturing a tiny first aid tent, she was instead greeted by a HUGE complex, a fully functioning hospital and a little bit more than that. It was hustling and bustling with activity and Scout found herself a little overwhelmed again. The senior hunters had continued to stress that "it would be scary at first, but you get used to it." Scout was just hoping that getting used to it would kick in soon.

She reported to the tiny room she'd been told to, waiting for one "Abigail Killian."

There was no warning sufficient to give the young woman a heads up as to what her duties in the Infirmary would be for the day. Quick to learn to always expect something new, Abbi had long ago stopped wondering what she would get into and occupied herself with more interesting things, whatever her fancy was at the moment. It did save her a considerable amount of stress, and she prided herself on her good sense.

But when she arrived for the start of her shift and was handed a starched doctor's coat instead of being instructed to change into scrubs, there was just a small moment of concern. It was quickly banished by the Lead who informed her she would be, as a part of her specialization, teaching a new Hunter the basics of first aid.
Abbi could have done a cartwheel if they'd let her.
(They didn't.)

There wasn't much time to prepare a lesson plan as she'd have liked, but she did take a few minutes to scrawl out a hasty list of important points to hit and even gave herself a little bit of a pep talk.
With a chipper "hello" and a bit of clattering in excitement on her part, Abbi entered the small room.
"Hi hi! Nice to meet you! You must be the new Hunter? How's its going? You settling in ok? So you're... Oh you're a Mist, right? That's cool! Mist is a lot of fun, I hope you do well!" So she was only talking a mile a minute, no big.

Scout checked her watch once, twice. She wasn't actually impatient, she was just fascinated and fixated by the new gadgetry on her wrist, it's glowing blue runes being something of a wonder for her. She took as much time as possible investigating it while she could.

The person that entered was overwhelming for Scout. She just babbled on, and on, and on-

< You must speak now! >

Scout stumbled over her words, which came out as a mumble at best. "Y-Yes." That was as much as she'd absorbed.

< Name, dear one! >

"My name is Scout ..." She tapped her watch, a bundle of nerves released in tiny pats while she attempted to hold her head high nonetheless. "I'm okay." That was as much as Abbi was getting.

"Yes" was not a sufficient reply to the multitude of questions that Abbi had posed, but she was of the mind that newbies ought not to be pushed for much chatter. Dawson had been quiet for the majority of the time she had spent with him on his first day, and she could recall how easily she had been shushed by the awe of the place when she was new too. It felt a kindness to not pester someone into talking when they would not always receive such later on in their careers as Hunters.

"Scout? Aw, that's such a cute name! Got a last name?" That much she would prompt for as she shuffled around the small room, trying to find something to sit on.
Finally she rummaged out a spinny stool that had been wedged between a cabinet and the wall, one wheel a bit squeaky until she sat on the cushion.

"ALRIGHT! So. First aid. Yeah." Oh glob, she didn't think of an introduction uhhh uhhh uhhhh....

"Kingsley," she said quietly. The juxtaposition of her regal last name and her humble nature was an incredible joke by the universe, surely.

Abbi introduced the idea of first aid, and Scout nodded. "I ... don't really know anything except how to put on bandaids and clearing shop wounds so ... sorry ..."

"Scout Kingsley? D'aww, that's really nice! Has a nice ring to it." Was better than her own name, there wasn't anything she could do with it like Scout could. Maybe for the next major holiday she'd have to gift the girl something with a cute crown on it...

Anyways! Moving onto first aid!
"Hey! Bandaids are a good start, we can work with simple stuff and move up... But uh... What's a shop wound?" That couldn't at all be something one sustained from too vigorous amounts of shopping, or else Abbi would know about it. Because boy howdy could she shop.
Also, that seemed too silly a response and the girl across from her looked pretty nervous, so Abbi would save the joke until she was sure it would be appreciated.

"Uh ... car shop. Like when your hand gets jammed in a wrench." She wiggled her fingers, imitating the motions. "Probably not useful here," she mumbled.

Then she put her hands back in her lap and stared, waiting for Abbi to do something.

There was a long pause where Abbi marveled at what Scout had said, both because of all the practical applications she could imagine for its use, but also because this young woman had had a very educational life before Deus. Obviously being familiar with the workings of cars was helpful, especially considering Abbi loathed cars to the point of avoiding them at all costs even to the detriment of her already nonexistent social life in high school by avoiding taking any of her driver's tests. But this girl, despite being so hesitant to talk, was definitely something else.

The awe was evident in the ginger's face before she let out a squeaky laugh.
"Man, if you know car shop first aid, you might know more than me." Her weapon, in a moment of superior sentimentality, asserted that her girl knew more, which was all in all true. She had been at it longer, but nonetheless, Abbi was vastly curious.
"Whaddya do when someone's hand gets jammed in a wrench?"

A slight blush came over Scout's face with the compliment; she always blushed too easily.

"Cold water, usually," she said shortly.

This was the cutest cutie ever.
This was moe incarnate.
Abbi was a little mad because she was not crowned as The Moe, but mostly she was just totally going to fawn over this adorable woman forever.

"Really? Just cold water, interesting!" The teen made a face of honest intrigue, filing away the information for later use. "Well, things at Deus work a little bit differently... Uh, what all have they told you about?" That was a loaded question that Abbi half expected to remain unanswered. But she didn't mind being patient if Super Cute Scout wanted to beat around the bush and be adorable some more.
Abbi could do this all day, really.

Scout wasn't really sure that someone's injured hand care was a thing you should find interesting, but she didn't pipe up to say so. She was quickly learning that the folks at Deus often didn't things without pretense or the normal lead up to conversation. Then again, she supposed that people who had traded their whole lives away wouldn't really be the kind to approach things cautiously.

"Nothing, really. I think ... things are powered by runes ... somehow ...?" Scout's eyes were watching a machine in the next room over, that beeped and fizzled and kept her interest more than talking about herself. "Sorry, should I have been more prepared?"

Not at all thinking she had done anything odd, Abbi continued to look as cheery and genial as she had before. She was, after all, thinking of all the cute things about Scout and listing them in categories because that's what you did with moe girls. It was a rock fact.
"Yeah runes!" Abbi laughed, her gaze following the other girl's and leaning out of her chair to figure it out. Before she could lose her balance she snapped back up and nodded encouragingly. "Its ok, I'm not one-thousand percent how they work either, I'm not a rune specialist so I might get it wrong, but its kind of a balance of science and... Not magic, but the stuff that makes the other worlds work. So its kinda weird, but it powers the Island and its cool and stuff!" That was surely the worst explanation ever, but it would have to do because Abbi didn't have anything else to go off on.

As for Scout's question, the teen finally lost her friendly look to turn worriedly reassuring, waving her hands quickly.
"No, no, you're fine! I just wanted to get a basis of what you knew already so I wouldn't tell you something you, yanno, had already heard." Again she smiled, though this time it was tempered with patience. "You already know a lot, you're clearly really sharp so you're gonna do just fine! You already know more than me, I didn't know anything when I got here, so you're doing great!"

Scout barely nodded along, trying to wrap her mind around it all. No more than a few weeks ago, she'd been worried about a particularly difficult wheel to fix, and now she had to wrap her mind around a magical, mythical world of crazy science and make believe.

"I don't really know anything ..." she said slowly and quietly, not in a self-depreciating way, but in a legitimate fact sort of way. She didn't mind the fact that she didn't know anything, because it wasn't a negative.

Abbi was now praising her for next to nothing, which didn't feel right because she hadn't earned it. "I guess that's good ...?"

"Sure ya do!" Abbi chirps back, her smile going a little lopsided in her attempt to be honest and cheer Scout up. "You're a mechanic, so you know a lot about cars and machines. And yeah, the machines here at Deus operate a little differently, but you've already got a good base and only gotta learn the ways they're different from what you know instead of trying to learn the whole thing." The teen squared her shoulders, clearly proud of herself, and gave an encouraging nod to the girl across the way.

"So that means... Oh! I should explain about shields!" Without saying anything further, Abbi reached a hand down the front of her shirt, and after a bit of rifling around, produced a swiss army knife. The knife was held up, a hand waved under it to showcase it Vana White style, before the blade was pulled out. Abbi shuffled the handle around in her palm so that it was held with the blade down and points it at her wrist. And then she stabs herself.
Only, the blade doesn't hit her skin, glancing off something that becomes translucent once the blade skims off it. The teen turns her a wide grin up at Scout.
"We've got shields thanks to our weapons, which means we're a lot less susceptible to injury. Neat, right?"

Scout remained quiet. It wasn't that she disliked Abbi's praise or that she found it annoying (on the contrary, Scout found it somewhat likeable), it was that she was utterly neutral on all things positive and chipper. The compliments brushed over her because she felt they were empty. She had retorts ready (how could you say that? You don't even know me) but she remained quiet and merely bobbed her head along to Abbi's outbursts.

She was far more relieved when Abbi gave information. It was only when Abbi stabbed herself that Scout lurched forward, giving a muffled cry. She blinked with confusion, staring between the blade and the girl's face multiple times.

"How does it work ...?" she asked curiously, actually interested for once.
