Sarangerel, draped in the finery that befitted one of her rank, lay on her belly, forepaws crossed and eyes closed. She might have even looked relaxed if the corner of her mouth had not been twitching in irritation. For, up above, five or six ravens were wheeling in lazy, noisy circles, and it didn't seem to matter where one went; they were always there.

From across the way one of her young sons appeared from the thorny undergrowth, thorny branches caught in the scruff of his half-grown mane. To see him was to bring a conflict of emotions. Pride and bitterness both. So many of her children had his eyes but a couple of them had been branded with his colours, too. This one, perhaps, looked the most like her deceased husband and though he was indeed dead, her hate for him had not died with him. Still, he was gone now and she had been left to ensure that her children grew up well; deserving of the title Faivkol. Her children would be fierce and glorious and, if she pressed them enough, would take on high ranks of their own come adulthood. And, my, how time had flown. How had her tiny cubs, nursing at her side, now grown to adolescents? She was not a particularly maternal lioness and yet it startled her to realise how quickly things moved on.

"Nokhoi! Daor. Where have you been?"

The boy shook his mane - but to no avail - the thorns stuck fast. "Sparring, kusrar."

She nodded, "good. Come here."

He stepped forwards and she pulled the thorns from his mane with not an ounce of tenderness.

"You are almost grown. You will become Braak, yes?"

The male nodded, "like kosrar, yes."

"I must speak with you and your siblings. Where are they? The time has come to find your place amongst the pride. A place above others."

Nokhoi shrugged in response, his eyes wandering up to where the ravens circled. He had tried - and failed - to kill them as a cub and now it was as if they were taunting him for it.

"Your father may be dead but his blood is in you. Whatever I thought of him he was a strong lion and he held great respect amongst the ranks. They will sing of him in battle songs for all the days. I wish that of my children, too. Do you understand this, Nokhoi? You who were named for him?"

"Yes," he replied, though he did not sound as if he did. He was still young, still at play, treating the shadowing training as a game. Perhaps this is what came of sons who had no fathers to keep them under control. Or perhaps it was down to Muunokhoi's faulty genes - it certainly hadn't' come from her side of the family!

User Image Saran licked her lips as she stalked an unsuspecting mouse. It was obviously a bit lost, scurrying back and forth to locate its home, but she wasn't about to let it get away. Crouching low, she waited for the mouse to turn its back completely to her before pouncing. The mouse let out a startled squeak as it was pinned, then was silenced by the lioness crushing it between her paw and the ground.

Lifting her paw away, Saran peered down at the dead mouse, green eyes narrowed as she surveyed her prize. It wasn't a very pretty mouse especially now that its guts were coming out its mouth, but it would make a nice snack. She ate it quickly, crunching the bones with mild delight as she headed back to the den that she had grown up in. She could hear her mother speaking and her brother, Nokhoi, replying dully as always. She shook her head, wondering when it would sink into him that he was the son of a great warrior and should take his upcoming roll in the pride seriously.

Being female she was at a bit of a disadvantage. There were those that wouldn't take her as seriously as they would if she were male, but that didn't stop her from wanting to become as great as her father. A near copy of her mother in appearance, Saran had decided to pursue the same roll Sarangerel had and work up from there. She was still considered a Ressra, of course, but she didn't care to wait much longer for proper training to begin.

Strolling up to her mother and brother, she yawned widely, tail flicking in a content way behind her. "And of me, kusrar?" she asked, her voice innocent but laced with an undertone of sarcasm. As she grew older she began to realize her talents lay in deceit and lies, in trickery and mind games. She was strong, of course, but there were better uses for growing mind like hers than one a brutish warrior.

Dang you and your generosity! ;~; Thank you, she's a pretty bab like her mama.

Ah, there she was! Her precious daughter, so similar in appearance that it brought her great joy to look upon her. This one was a child she could be proud of. With a small chirrup of greeting, Sarangerel moved towards her green-eyed beauty, touching the end of her nose briefly to her shoulder. "Males have a way of looking down on us, of treating us as prizes." She thought of her deceased husband again, his memory often coming back to taunt her. "And we are prizes for we are beautiful and we are Faivkol. We may have a disadvantage through gender but we have our advantages, too. Choose your mate carefully and orchestrate him winning against any other challengers - then wrap him around your paw and rule from the shadows. That is my advice to you, my daor daughter."

Nokhoi, apparently not happy with being dismissed upon the arrival of his sister, stepped forwards to - suddenly eager to be involved where he had not before.

"No male will want her. She is a pest."

Sarangerel bared her teeth at him. "Do not speak that way of your keksar."

As her mother came over to her, Saran glanced at her brother over her mother's back with a smug expression. It was no secret Sarangerel hadn't liked their father and, since Nokhoi looked so much like him, that dislike was easily transferable now that their father was no longer in the picture. She liked being the 'good' cub in her mother's eyes, as she always had praise that followed her wherever she went. The fact that Nokhoi received nothing but criticism and lectures was just, in her eyes, as he was still a bit of a slacker, more interested in playing and sleeping than training. Still, she knew he would grow into a strong lion and they were siblings. Just because there was a bit of sibling rivalry and roughhousing didn't mean they weren't close. Saran would lay down her life for her siblings or mother without a second thought.

His comment made her laugh and she nuzzled her mother's neck, green eyes staring down her brother still. "We shall see about that," she said, a challenge in her voice. "A pest is far more tolerable and desirable than a laze-about."

Were she a bit younger she would have stuck her tongue out at her brother...or perhaps if their mother was not there. She wasn't quite an adult yet, after all, and although she suppressed it, there were still cub-like tendencies that wanted to break through her defenses. Instead, she nuzzled Sarangerel again and looked about for the rest of her siblings. "Will they not come?"

Her mother chuckled at her daughter's response and finally seemed to relax a little, dropping into a sit so that she could peer easily between her two children. And where were her other sons? She had not seen them for some time. Were they still sparring where her lazy son had returned from? But he had shrugged when she had asked him earlier. Perhaps they were out, scouring the lands with some shuko.

"They knew you were back," Nokhoi retorted sulkily, determined not to let his sister get the better of him - even though it was clear she already had. He snorted and lowered into a lazy stretch, just managing to stifle a yawn.

"Don't get comfortable, Nokhoi. We'll circle the camp and see if we can find them. Perhaps we'll find you a good teacher, too. Someone to beat the laziness out of you."

Nokhoi's ears dropped back into his mane, a look of distaste plastered on his expression. "And what about her?" He blurted, shooting a glare at his sister. She needed a lesson on manners!

Saran snickered softly at her brother's answer, as well as the moody tone to his voice. Ah, he was an easy one to antagonize. Were he of more volatile stock that would probably not be a good thing once he grew up. He'd certainly get to be stronger than her - it was just the way of things - and she wasn't sure she could hold her own against a blind with rage male. Luckily for her their spats were rarely settled with physicality and more with little barbed words like these.

At her mother's decision she nodded slightly and swished her tail as she turned. "Kusrar is my teacher, Nokhoi," she said with a smug grin as her brother asked after her. "I will learn all that I need to from her."

There were others in the pride she wouldn't mind learning from, some of the females that held a higher rank, but she was sure they wouldn't give her the time of day until she was a bit older and made a little bit of a name for herself. Her mother would help her climb that ladder, though, weasel her way up the ranks, both by her own actions and by finding a worthy mate that she could subtly control, just as Sarangerel had said.

Sarangerel found her paws again, determined to hunt down the rest of her wayward children. And, trusting that Nokhoi and Saran would follow, moved away from her den and down the narrow pathway between the thorns - formed from the passing of many a lion. Above her the ravens at last seem to have been distracted and were heading back out across the unclaimed plains. Sarangerel breathed a short sigh of relief, her ears relaxing at the sudden departure of noise.

"Have any of the Nergui males caught your eye, yet, daor?" the proud mother asked, turning green eyes back to her beautiful daughter. It rankled her that males were such a necessity in their lives although it need not be so bad if one could find a mate that pleased her.

Now trailing behind, Nokhoi looked utterly miserable. Here he was, traipsing after his mother and sister and being forced to endure 'girl talk' because his brothers were off cavorting somewhere. Perhaps there was something to be said for busying oneself with work...

"Not yet," Saran said with a little shake of her head. She hadn't had much time to look at the males of the pride, nor did she have any real desire to at the moment. She was still a bit too young to start to think about cubs, after all, and she had no doubts in her mind that her mind and looks would have them all fighting for her anyway. "But there is potential in a few that I might pursue once I am older."

She glanced over her shoulder and snickered softly at the sight of her brother. Boy, he looked like someone had just eaten the last of the zebra. "What about you? Have you seen any females worthy of your children yet?" she asked, only half teasing. There were some worthy lionesses in the pride and even though she teased her brothers, she wanted nothing but the best for them. Should he desire one of the lower or dumber females....well. She'd have to put a stop to that and help steer him in the right direction.

Sarangerel nodded, trying to think of names as she walked. "Very wise. daor. Very wise, indeed." Sarangerel might have been somewhat limited in a match for her daughter but she would do everything within her power to ensure that she did not suffer the same fate as she had. A male like Muunokhoi would only lead to unhappiness and she would not stand to see her children unhappy.

Though she did not turn to look back at her son, she folded back an ear so that she could hear his response; curious despite the fact that she suspected what his response would be.

"No," came the sulky reply, "they're all too annoying. Not worth the effort of dueling for." Sarangerel smiled. She was more familiar with the ladies of the pride and, thankfully, she could think of many good candidates.

"Hm," she added, "I don't think that sounds quite right, do you, Saran?"

The reply made Saran snort quietly. "All too annoying, huh?" she said, looking forward again as she walked. She could sort of understand where he was coming from, as to her most of the males in the pride were too boorish and dull for her tastes. Still, she knew she had some growing to do, as did her brothers. Things could change between now and when they were fully grown.

"No, it doesn't sound right at all. But kusrar knows many females. Perhaps if you can't find one on your own she can ask one to be your mate for you." She flicked her tail at her brother, smirking just a bit. There was nothing more embarrassing than for a parent to set up a courtship like that. Embarrassing and a rather big blow to the image of whoever's son or daughter. They didn't have enough courage to do the asking themselves, so therefore they must be weak. Never a good thing.

"Or you simply may be a bachelor all your life and never have any cubs. Such a shame."

Sarangerel laughed prettily at her daughter's words. Such a smart, sensible girl, she was. "I do think it may come to that."

Nokhoi's frowned had turned thunderous at his sister and mother's teasing, his ears flattened back against his mane and his jaw clenched tight. If all women were like the ones in his family then he wanted no part in it. He shouldn't have to put up with this sort of abuse!

"You two don't know anything!" He snapped at them at last and, with a loud huff, he sped up, pushing past the both of them and tearing off up ahead; catching his mane on the thorny undergrowth once more.

When he was gone, Sarangerel glanced at her daughter, "And he is a good example," she declared solemnly, "of why females should be in charge. Thank goodness our Xakaav Oma is female, else its likely we would have failed every objective out of some sort of attempt to flout our egos."

Saran laughed with her mother, but quickly snarled at Nokhoi as he rushed passed them, bumping into her on the way. He got his retaliation from the thorny plants they were walking through, though, so she let her snarl die away. She glared after him and turned to groom her shoulder where he had pushed her for just a moment, helping the fur settle back into place.

"Yes. Perhaps other leaders will be replaced with females," she said with a wistful sigh. Males were important for cubs and fighting, but she felt as though females should be in charge of the important operations around here. It was obvious the males made decisions based on their own strength and egos, where females were content to let them show off while quietly casting their own lots for more important things.

"Perhaps I'll replace one of the leaders," she added with a sly grin. "When I am older, that is. Not right away." She had a lot to learn still, after all.

Sarangerel smiled.

"That, my daor, would be a wonderful thing indeed." It may have been nothing more than a dream, but no one got anywhere without a dream to aim for, right?

"The Nergui might not realise it yet, but they are in need of ones such as us. Our time will come, Saran. Let us bide and be patient and someday greatness will be ours."

An ear twitched and, with another smile, she hastened her pace. "I do think I hear some of your better brothers up ahead. Come, let's go and see if they are faring better than poor, baby Nokhoi."
