Thank the gods for black fur. Without her dark pelt, Nyota'eusi would be one frozen cheetahsicle right about now. She was very much out of her element way up here. What kind of idiotic creature would want to live up here?! She quietly muttered to herself as she rancorously tiptoed through the snow. I swear I can't feel my toes anymore... she thought with horror.

The only reason she was up here was the promise of rewards by these mountain-dwelling leopards. It seemed vague enough that she didn't mind asking for something like a good meal. Always being on the run kept her in great shape, but with a constant empty belly. She needed the luxury of a large meal right about now.

Finding a partner in this was no easy task; most other prospective hunters brushed her off, claiming her lithe stature was no match for the frozen terrain. Others simply ignored her in favor of others with more stamina or strength. And then she had met Tesbel, who didn't seem to care one way or the other of what she was. That was good enough for her. Hell, maybe he'd give her a few pointers on hunting up here.

Numbers:
5: Small, torn and barely useable. Worth 1 point.
2: A fair quality jackal pelt. Worth 2 points.

User Image Tesbel was no prowler, he was a guard. He was a decent guard.

What he found himself to be rather good at though was tracking. He knew the snow as if he had lived here all his life, the nooks, the ledges, the little burrows in the snow where prey was likely to be. Most told him it was a gift, he thought differently. It merely about survival to him. If you weren't good at much and had to choose to be good at something Tesbel would advise you be good hunter and tracking. It was a priceless skill to have at your side, especially here were time was of the essence.

A small part of him was aware of how frozen his companion was. She had suggested they go hunting together, and who was he to refuse? Though she wasn't one of the pride and looked to have much thinner fur then him. Tesbel loved the cold as if it was the hot summer sun he could rest under comfortably. Only he knew that wasn't the case, for resting in the snow was almost certain death.

"Stop." He commanded, and motioned for her to look in the distance. From what he could see it was a small hare, out all alone in the snow.

The short, sharp order brought Nyota out of her frostbitten thoughts. She immediately halted and stood bolt upright, like a soldier on inspection. Tesbel was difficult to read; he had agreed to their partnering, but other than that he didn't say much. As he silently called her over, the cheetah hesitantly loped to his side.

Scanning the bright white landscape ahead of them, she squinted until she saw the tiny gray blob hopping about. She was worried she was going to be snow-blind by the end of this excursion. Then again, maybe her partner just had really, really good vision. Her tail flicked twice at the thought of chasing the small animal down.
"I-I just need to get my blood pumping," she chattered out. Small, harsh puffs of warm breath escaped from her mouth as he spoke. "Just tell me what to d-do and I'll... do it."

Sounds cool to me. Maybe he'll give her some pointers and by the end, she'll catch the jackal and be all proud. xD

"Hmm." Tesbel thought for a moment. He was particularly interested if Nyota was a good hunter or not, but it would be nice to know since they were doing this as a team.

"Go over there." He told her, pointing to the far left of where the hare was. "Make sure it doesn't see you." He added, and turned to go to the far right of where the hare was currently sniffing around. Tesbel's idea was simple. Corner and kill. Two felines had a better chance of catching a spooked animal then one and if they managed to limit the critter's escape route then catching it would be simple.

After catching it, the hare was one more small pelt the pride had to rely on. One more helpful trinket to keep those who could not venture to the lower caverns off their death beds.

Tesbel only hoped that Nyota understood his plan. He thought it was easy to grasp, but maybe not, and that was alright he hadn't really explained it. It just made it easier to use as few words as possible. For him, at least.

The smaller feline gave a stern nod. Her eyes were alert now as she studied the hare's movements. Unlike Tesbel and the leopards of the Mlima, Nyota had no extra fur between her paw and toe pads to cushion her prowling. To make up for this, she instead lowered herself to the ground, ignoring the yelp-inducing snow that greeted her belly. Ever-so-carefully, she crept to where her partner had pointed.

Fortunately, the hare seemed to be oblivious. It hopped around every so often, digging and wiggling its small pink nose when it turned up nothing. Then, popping out from the snow came a second hare. A much larger one, too! It must've been a male, sitting snug in its burrow beneath the frigid earth. From where Nyota lay, surrounded by snow, she tried to signal Tesbel. The two of them could easily catch one rabbit, but with a pair of them around, both could wind up empty-handed.

When the second Hare popped out Tesbel had stopped all movement for a moment to glare at the bigger, fatter male bunny. This ruined everything, but what was hunting without a little complications? His ears folded back as a new plan formed in his mind. Better empty-handed then not trying at all right?

The splotchy leopard looked in the direction of where Nyota should have been, and was pleased to find she had gone exactly where he had pointed to. Their eyes locked for a moment and he gave a nod that he was going to move further up, where the path of snow narrowed most. He figured if they gave the hares enough space to move it would be easier to catch them. They had more space to roam and move furthest away from their burrow. Additionally if Nyota moved fast enough she could prevent them from getting to the burrow in time should Tesbel be discovered or choose to attack.

The goal was to catch one rabbit, and it still remained that way. Should they be lucky enough to bring down both of the hares then they were blessed with good fortune. If not, then at least they'd have one of the hares in their maws for brunch.

As she watched the master at work, the gears in Nyota's mind turned. Oh! He was going to block off any possible escape routes. The cheetah took the idea on board and scanned the landscape to plot out possible chase paths. Calculating in the snow and her angle of attack...

The quiet whispers of the morning wind were the only prelude to the bunnies' untimely demise. Everything felt very still and hushed, and it was only in that moment did the male realize something was wrong. Like a bolt of black lightning, Nyota'eusi stormed out from the snow. Her eyes were currently on the female rabbit; she argued that the male would naturally try and draw her away from his mate. As the chase began to pick up speed, the rabbits darted from her as quickly as they could. The male bolted for the narrow path and its reliable hidey-holes, until it caught scent of another predator. He immediately did a 180, comically running in place for a moment before shooting off.

Meanwhile, the two ladies were sprinting all over the place. Every time the little bunny tried to make a mad dash for her burrow, Nyota would be right there waiting. All tension and anger that had built up during that arduously long wait dissipated within seconds. Her body was warming up, and though her nostrils ached from that frozen mountain air, she loved it nonetheless. She seemed to smile a little as she glided alongside the frightened animal.

Unfortunately, the rabbit could somehow sense this cheerfulness, and conveniently slipped by her murderer. By the time Nyota saw what had happened, she made a breakneck dash for the burrow. But it was too late! The female had just made it home free. Nyota wouldn't let that slide, though. Using her claws, she began to dig furiously through the snow and dirt.
"Ooohhh no you don't! GET UP HERE!" she snarled, her body disappearing more and more under the snow. Eventually, her upper half was completely submerged underground. Her back legs and tail thrashed about as she tried to get a hold of the female.

This was no longer a hunt; it was a three-ring circus!

Tesbel was motionless, he awaited the moment as the wind died for only a few seconds before the male hare noticed he was in danger. As he approached the place where Tesbel lay hidden, keeping his breaths shallow and short the male suddenly caught whiff of the splotchy leopard's scent, and darted off after taking a moment to regain his footing in the snow.

A scowl emerged across Tesbel's face at this. He thought that he had maintained the perfect cover, apparently, he was wrong. With something of a roar he came pounding over from the snow drift he had remained hidden under. Snow cloaked the black of his splotchy patterns and with each movement made another layer the white flakes seemed to come off and thin further. Eventually the only snow clung still to his legs, not his back. But he hardly noticed this change at all. The thrill of the hunt, the scent of food and blood made him merciless to himself. He noticed not the heat of his body rising nor the quickening pace of his heart as he thundered along the snow. He felt he was moving so fast that he was gliding on ice. Maybe he was on ice. The thought was pondered for only three seconds before being forgotten in Tesbel's mind.

The male hare had nowhere to go now. Tesbel had him cornered between himself and the back of a small slop of a hill. Even if the little bunny rushed his way up there, something told him that his hunter would follow at twice the speed of his.

As Tesbel glared at his prey he watched for any sudden movements. If the hare seemingly leaned more towards the left Tesbel was prepared to dart to the left. If the hare took a step back and seemed tempted to run up the hill, you could sure as bet Tesbel was ready for that as well. All seemed to be going well for him. Within seconds he knew he'd feel the sweet taste of rabbit along his tongue. He thought that at least, until a creature, something of a smaller canine spoofed up from below the snow. The dog-thing shook it's head free from the little white specks, before placing it's snout back down in search of something edible. A jackal.

"Are you kidding me?!" Tesbel hissed, now a jackal was here to make the hunt even more of a game then a hunt itself? Tesbel had only looked away for only a second when the male hare began to bolt. With a growl the splotchy leopard turned to follow, but by now, no longer worrying over cover shouted to his partner with a somewhat distressed tone.

"Nyota! Nyota, look at the hill!"

With an angry snarl, Nyota ripped herself out of the ground, the female rabbit half-squirming, half-thrashing in her maw. She shook it violently a few times, before whipping her body around and throwing the prey down with all her might. It made a disgusting "splap" noise as it hit the dirt, quite shredded. Whoops.

Nostrils flaring and her heart racing, she was still irritated by the frustration of digging out the little scrawny thing. As she heard Tesbel call her name, Nyota snapped her head up to see the jackal pop out from the snow. She watched the leopard sprint off after the hare, and snorted as she watched the jackal tag along. Oh, so it thought it could just reap the rewards of their hard work?! That wouldn't fly.

Now it looked more like a train as predator pursued predator pursuing prey. The wiry cheetah was beginning to catch up, much to the jackal's surprise. Probably didn't expect to see the fastest land animal right alongside it, did it? Nyota would have grinned, had she not been pissed off at the scavenger's antics. She was concentrating on building up enough speed, though by now she was nearly right alongside the rabbit. Slow up, slow up, she thought, reining herself in.

With a final burst of reserved strength, Nyota sprung at the jackal, claws like a soccer player's cleats at the ready. The pair of predators tumbled through the spraying snow, eventually separating to snarl and bite at each other. Though it knew it was doomed, the plucky canine put up one hell of a fight. The cheetah just narrowly avoided losing her paw at the ankle as she dodged its snapping jaws. She finally managed to get a good bite on its neck, clamping down until she no longer felt it struggle.

Tesbel's legs pumped madly as he raced to catch up with the male hare. He hardly noticed the jackal nipping at his feet, and he almost failed to see Nyota thundering alongside his prey before leaping at the pursuer behind him. This happened just in time Tesbel thought, as the ground ahead of them curved sharply to the left. Unless his prey had the intention of running head first into a snow drift then they would both have to make an unexpected turn.

That was when Tesbel chose to strike. He snarled again, claws reached out to grasp the snow and his teeth bared as a net for the hare's body. He felt a ping of success as he managed to snatch the squirming critter in his maw, although it was only it's hind leg he had a firm hold on. The rabbit kicked firmly into Tesbel's mouth, and despite all reactions in his body commanding him to leg go, instead Tesbel chomped down even harder. He could feel one of the duo's bones cracking and odds were it wasn't his.

But the thing was persistent, and it still kicked him and his lower jaw. Tesbel had this point was fed up and proceeded to fling the hare to the ground, pounding on top of it with the intent of ripping those stupid ears off it's head. Within seconds the hare was finished, it's pelt very badly damaged but not entirely unsalvageable.

His breathing now slowly, his heart taking a few moments to return to a normal pace, the leopard turned to where he had seen Nyota disappeared and spoke to her. He was calmer now that the hunt was over. For once, the cold was actually getting to his feet and he felt the desire to be in the comfort of inside.

"Let's go home now." He told Nyota, a notion he was sure she'd agree with.

Gene Wilder
Sure ^^ The end then.
