He could already feel the heat his prey's blood would bring as it rushed down his throat. Warmth and heat and life - that was what his family had always said. It was something that he had once scoffed at, of course; after all, his breed was hardy enough to survive cold winters in hell. Why should they need something as trivial as heat when they could survive without it?

He understood, now that he was on his own. His family had scattered with the Great Herd, and prey no longer came running toward them in attacks - no, now he had to hunt it down on his own. And to Tomislav, there was nothing sweeter than the warmth and heat and life he stole from a prey animal, like the hare he was hunting now, with its upright ears and bright eyes. It had been incredibly stupid of it to come out of its warren; he was not the only predator out here, despite the chill. There were owls, birds of prey, wolves and bobcats and mountain lions, all looking for a quick meal.

Tomislav flexed his muscles, glad to feel the strain of them against the numbness that settled in with the chill of winter. Beastly as he was, he was more built for battle than he was for stealth, and when it came to hunting rabbits, it made the job just a bit harder - but then, he always had love a challenge, to a point.

Settling into a crouch, he set his sights on the rabbit thirty feet in front of him. It would freeze before it ran, and that would be his opportunity to strike. He focused his breathing, loosened his muscles, and took off, crashing through the bushes with such force that snow flew everywhere, but Tomislav had eyes only for the rabbit. A meal was a meal, and a meal was life. And he was hungry.

The weather had steadily been getting colder, the season sinking in deeper and deeper. Snow had fallen, the winds were bitter, the trees were all skeletal sentinels in the silent woods. The largest drawback to this time of year for the dark mare was how much she stood out against the white snow, making it harder and harder to catch prey unawares. The winter was already making her lean; she'd lost a bit of weight in the scarce food situation. She wasn't concerned, of course. She was a supreme huntress and even if her meals were farther apart, she knew she would not starve even in the harshest conditions.

It was with this supreme confidence that she shook the snow from her wings and took wing. She had waited until the sun had begun to set so she could keep to the shadows; she hadn't had to wait long now that the days were shorter. She stayed low among the tops of the trees. It was easier to navigate with all of the leaves gone and she was able to stay silent as she spotted a lone rabbit. She began to sweep in for the kill, but she noticed something else and pulled up, skimming the tops of the trees before landing on a particularly large bough, shaking a little snow down from it.

She couldn't help but grin wickedly as she spotted a kalona male blundering towards the rabbit. She couldn't help but be amused at his rather straightforward approach to the rabbit, one of the most skittish and swift prey animals. She found herself curious and wanting to watch him fail. However her stomach rumbled, reminding her that food was scarce in these times. She launched back off the tree branch and swooped back towards the rabbit.

It bolted suddenly, catching sight of her shadow, or hearing the stallion charging at it like a bull - Wretch wasn't sure which. Nor did she care. Being in the air she had a better shot a keeping up with the rabbit's erratic movements. It darted left and she adjusted to follow. It ducked under some larger roots just as Wretch closed in for the kill. She landed hard on those roots momentarily, launching off of it again in pursuit as she spotted the rabbit darting off back the way they'd come from - closer to the kalona stallion.

She let out a peel of wicked laughter as she turned in the air, trying to catch up with the rabbit before it blundered into the other kalona. It suddenly took off to the right into an open field, avoiding both kalona. Wretch sped up as much as she could and guessed the rabbit's next direction and dove, catching the rabbit in her teeth as she touched down. It screamed a moment, then was still. Wretch turned to see if the stallion had continued the chase, prepared both to gloat and defend her kill if she needed.

To Tomislav's surprise, the rabbit darted not back the way it had come, to the safety of its warren, but away from it, completely altering the path he might have predicted it would take. It ran all over the place, nearly invisible against the snow with its white winter coat, but its beady black eye and flurry of movement let Tomislav track it as it kicked up clouds of snow behind it.

And after the hare came a sweeping shadow, dark against the white snow in the evening.

He recognized all of it: the sharp points of horns, the supple translucent membranes that stretched between long finger bones, the spade tail. Another Kalona was on the trail of his kill, his prey, and it would beat him to it, by the speed at which that shadow was moving. He looked up and caught sight of the mare, her coat a blue as deep as the oceans', just as she was diving back toward him; she blended with the night sky that was falling down above them, her glowing eyes on her prey. His prey.

Snarling, Tomislav thundered after her. Taking flight now would be pointless, of course. She was yards ahead of him, graceful enough to pluck the rabbit up with her teeth without flying head over heels in the process of landing. She touched down far ahead of him, her dark legs cutting cleanly into the snow, and the look she gave him was daring.

The squeal the hare let out and cut short turned the blood in his veins to jagged ice, and fury lit in a furnace somewhere deep within him, melting the ice until it sizzled. Heat and chill ran through Tomislav at once, and his hackles raised. "That's my kill you have in your mouth, mare," he growled, setting his feet deep into the snow. His tail lashed behind him, its razor sides cutting the air with a whistle. After a moment, he pointed it at the mare with the dead rabbit in her mouth. "Release it, or you will find just how quickly the cold can kill." Squaring his stance, he lowered his head. Should it come to a fight, his horns would shield his skull, and his tail was sharp as a blade. He was ready for a fight. That warmth was mine, not hers to steal. Warmth was what kept him alive in this chill. Warmth, blood, meat. And if she would not give up his prey, well... She might just become it. This mare might have speed on him, but he had brute strength, and he knew how to use it. He was of old blood, the veterans of combat and wars waged, and it had been a time since he had stretched his muscles.

Mahogany Sunset
sorry for the late reply. my muse for her has been like none lol

She stared defiantly at the other kalona for a time, torn between not wanting to release the rabbit and wanting to address the stallion before her. She wouldn't be able to defend the kill very well without using her fangs against the male, so she finally elected to drop it. She stood over it protectively, eyeing the male maliciously. "I'm not sure you can call it your kill if I'm the one that killed it," she said matter-of-factly. She cocked her head at him, squaring her shoulders and narrowing her eyes. She was assessing him, trying to determine if the rabbit was worth fighting the clearly stronger kalona male. He was very solidly built she could tell, his muscles were tense and visible through his somewhat lean pelt. It was a rough winter, but he was clearly maintaining his strength well. He was maintaining his rage, as well - she could tell by the hate in his eyes.

She wished she had simply snatched the rabbit in flight and continued on, but the angle it took to catch it had forced her to land. It was impossible to take to the air in time now; the air was so still that it would take a lot of time and effort to gain any lift. By the time she got in the air he could have rushed her and torn her from the air, not to mention he had the same ability to fly that she did. If she wanted to get away running was probably a better idea. She wasn't sure she wanted to run though. The fresh, warm blood was running down her throat and neck, making her blood thirsty and anxious for more interesting hunting than a simple hare. She took a proprietary step forward, just over the dead rabbit, whose blood was staining the snow red.

"My meal is getting cold, so I suggest you leave." She doubted he'd heed her advice, of course. He had murder in his eyes, which wasn't unexpected. She had, after all, swooped in and taken the rabbit. All was fair in her mind, particularly in winter. The stallion hadn't touched the rabbit before Wretch had killed it, and in her mind that made it free game.

She unfurled her wings slowly, thrashing her tail behind her threateningly. Her muscles were taught and ready, waiting for him to make a move. She hoped it wouldn't take long for him to decide what he was going to do. Every moment they wasted the rabbit was cooling more and more. She decided to bend down and clamp down on it, savoring the warm blood and the sensation of flesh between her teeth. She ripped a bite out of the rabbit, eyes locked on the male kalona, waiting for any movement.
