Reports have been coming in that supply ships are disappearing off the western coast, near Dragnid Cliffs as they travel around the mainland to and from the docks in the southwest. Ships have gone completely silent, disappearing without a trace. Preliminary scouting has been inconclusive. Wreckage has not been recovered, nor any of the ships' personnel. As there are fewer goods available in the marketplace, the issue will soon become public knowledge.

This letter has been sent to Kurt and Rosette - recruits for the Order of the Light. Events of this notice occur at the same time as Raken and Malek's missions and neither would know of the other two's missions.

Quote:
Dear Recruits,

We have discovered the source of our supply shortages and must investigate further. Preliminary reports have revealed that our supply ships are disappearing after they pass by Dragnid Cliffs both heading north and south. We need evidence to support claims that there are pirates in the area stealing the ships.

Our supplies are dangerously low, and we must prevent this from becoming public knowledge, to avoid panic. We are sending you, Kurt, and Rosette, as our top level recruits to investigate the matter. We have full faith in your success for this mission, and you will be serving our Guardians most faithfully in accepting this mission on their behalf.

We have a contact on the mainland for you near the landing pad. Please report as soon as possible for further instructions.

Graciously,
Castle Wardens

(( Ru & Twitch, you must work together for this mission, but success or failure will still be judged individually based on each pae's decisions. Please reply with reactions to the notice, their answer, and if they choose to do it, they should head to the landing pad to await further instructions. Should either of you delay for more than a few days, staff will move the RP ahead, taking care of the inactive pae. If you cannot commit to completing this RP, please let us know so we can adjust. ))

Looking over the letter, Kurt read it a few times to make sure he understood. It was time, he was being called. The greatest honor in life besides being a father is serving the Guardians. It was the second honor that caused him misgivings. Looking at his youngest son, Aloiki, he worried about leaving the child with Zofie. Mostly he got over his dislike of Arista but all the same, leaving two toddlers with the pair felt like a bit much. It could be more given the doll Aloiki seemed to love so much. There was no telling when that thing would sprout to life. A daughter of his was born that way, those things didn't fool him!

In addition there were his girls, and one boy, both adults and their young from his alpaca. It was a lot to ask of Zofie, especially given that he took this seriously. In telling her he had to leave for a little while, he refused to tell her were he was going or what he was doing. Instead he gave her a hug and just asked her to take care of everything--including putting Arista to work.

The Dragnid name had caused him to worry. Ever since he was a child, back when dirt was young, that was a place to avoid. The whole of the isle had always been safe, but that place was bad. Everyone knew to avoid it though he couldn't remember if there was a specific reason why other than it was dangerous. Without offensive powers, he missed being able to shift into just about anything, it was a worry if he'd be able to protect Rosette.

At least, he had a weapon. The journey for the items was meant for protection. Surely this would be just the case for that. First he took the earth coin he'd traded Fiona. Remembering where the tree was, the coin felt important, it could be useful to bluff their way on to a ship. That he placed in a little leather bag that he attached to his silver necklace.

The sword was slung on his hip held up by leather and hand wrapped in the same. Wasn't pretty, but it would keep him from cutting himself. Now that would be embarrassing! The cup and stick were placed in a sack on his back along with two large Alpaca blankets and a measure of alpaca rope. The sheets could be useful in hiding if absolutely necessary.

Finally he wrapped a season's worth of clean alpaca fibers in a huge bundle secured with spun Alpaca rope. That would make it a little easier to carry. This he would 'ship' to the Faun if an excuse was needed. Should nothing happen, Fiona would be happy for more fibers all the same. It amused him to think he could look a lot like a faun if he used them right. Almost leaving without actual previsions. Zofie stopped him and give him a small pack of food to go along. Wouldn't last him terribly long but then how long could this take?

Giving Zofie and the children hugs, he bid them farewell. Arista got a hard look and a stern talking to about protecting the homestead and taking care of his Alpaca. With that he left just telling them he had to go on a trip and would be back soon. Was that too optimistic? Shaking his head to dismiss the thought, he had the Guardians on his side, everything would be right.

From the front door he turned down the path and started walking towards the landing pad. Flight was impossible with the weight on him from all the stuff he carried. At least his home was close to the landing pad so while the walk would be long it wouldn't be overly. The last thing he wanted to do was leave his companion waiting on him. Or worse, he could get left behind.

By sun down, the landing pad was in view.

User ImageThe letter was delivered as Rosette was settling down for a afternoon tea and biscuit. It was a surprise to say the least, Ruby and her never did get much mail. The bigger shock was it was from the Castle Wardens. What could they possibly need her for?

Rosette sat down as she began to read the letter over, mouthing ever word as she read them. As she finished she lowered her head slightly before nodding to herself. She would be a fool not to accept such a task. The City needed her help. No. She wasn't alone. There was another. This Kurt. Would he accept this mission as well? There was only one way find out. She quietly hid the letter from sight, not wanting Ruby to see it. Ruby was her close friend, but the less other who knew about this problem the better.

The letter said to meet by the Landing Pad. That was on the other side of the island. If that's where she needed to go then that's where she'd go. She left a note for her roommate, saying she was going out. Hopefully Ruby wouldn't worry too much. She took one last look at her home, making sure everything was in order before heading to the door. She paused at the door and let out a small held breath. "Guardians give us the strength to help the pae of Telrunya City." She whispered quietly to herself. If they couldn't stop these pirates...no. Failure was not an option. Her and this Kurt needed to do what they could to solve this mystery. The City was depending on them. With one last nod to herself be left her house, left the City, her wings carrying her to the Landing Pad.

Waiting for the pair of angels at the Landing Pad, an Avalon fairy hovered in the air, tapping his foot in an impatient manner. The flutter of feathered wings announced the arrival of the red one from above. The other came walking from somewhere out on the Isle.

Well, at least he seemed to have enough endurance to do that. The Avalon fairy looked them both over before seeming to make his appraisal. "A little scrawny," he muttered to himself, but not quietly enough. "But, I've seen worse. Ah well, take what you can get when in need..."

Clearing his throat, he zipped up into the air over their heads, taking up a hovering 'ready' stance, feet seemingly planted apart, his hands behind his back. "As you know, you've been selected for a very important mission. I trust you have the general picture. We are to proceed to the docks where a ship is waiting for you to board. This ship has been outfitted to look like a normal supply ship...however, it is only a decoy. With luck, those stupid pirates won't realize the difference. If possible, you are to draw out the culprits who have been messing with our supply lines."

"We don't expect you to fight them or anything,"
he laughed, as if he'd just told the funniest joke. In fact, it took a moment to compose himself, wiping his eyes with a lingering chuckle. "No, no. The ship isn't manned by normal cargo shippers or even cargo. If you do draw out the pirates, and they board the ship to steal the cargo, they'll be captured by our trap below decks. You just need to put on a convincing act. And keep the troops in line. You're here on the Guardians' behalf, remember that. They have eyes on you." He seemed to grow serious now, looking back and forth between them, meeting their eyes each time. "Though the plan is already made, you're to make sure it's carried out. A test of your leadership potential; take it seriously, kids."

After a moment of staring at them both, he nodded and asked, "Any questions? No? Good! Let's get going! Quick now!" He then shot off into the surrounding forest, setting a blazing pace for the pair of angels in his wake.

His eyes fell on his young companion, what a pair, deep red and blue. His natural concern was for her safety first and for most. Sexist as it was, he hated the idea of a lady getting harmed while he was around. There wasn't a chance at first to say anything as their contact seemed in a hurry.

Rolling his shoulders with the scrawny assessment, the old angel kept his grumps to himself. Ears open he took in the mission message. They were on the same page with the the decoy. Patting the offering of alpaca fibers he had brought, the angel gave a slight nod. Decoys worked best with some real supply showing. That and if hiding was necessary this would help.

Not being expected to fight did ease some of his worries for the little lady's safety. If they weren't expected to fight a beat the pirates then if it got bad they could take off with what they had. A step forward reminded him of the steel on his hip. For a old man, he could put on quite the show for the pirates. Without any questions, he hoped to be able to speak with he red angel but that wasn't to be. A heavy sigh followed but he at least gave her a smile and said, "Hi!" Before readjusting his load and starting a speed walk forward. There was no flying with everything he had on him but at least he could go at a healthy pace.

Scrawny? Rosette frowned as she couldn't help but look at her arms. No, he was right. She WAS scrawny. In her effort to ready her mind, she forgot to ready her body. Oh bother. She made a metal note to asked the wood cutters if they needed help or she could start running with Ruby. Oh there was so much work to be done.

Rosette's attention was brought back to the Fairy as he continued to speak about the mission. It seemed simple enough. She looked looked over to the other angel as he seemed to pat something. What was that?

It seemed like the time for talk was over and the Fairy was off. Kurt even managed to say a hi before the two of them were off, they would have to speak on the run. "Hi, you must be Kurt. I'm Rosette. It's nice to meet you." She would have offered her hand if they weren't going at such a quick pace. her mind was already running with ideas and thoughts about what they needed to do. "So do you have any ideas yet?" They might as well start to brainstorm now. "I wonder if we'll have any time to meet the troops before we leave, even just a simple hello and a hand shake. I figure they'd listen to someone better if they have at least met them then total strangers, you know?" Then there was the other point, act natural on the ship. "Know anything about ships Kurt? If we have to act natural then we'll just have to be apart of her crew after all. You can't get more natural then that, even if it's just mopping the deck." She couldn't help but giggle lightly. At least they would give her a work out.

Rosette didn't know how comfortable she'd be without a weapon. Some form of protection would be better than none. The idea of the troops fighting while she did nothing also didn't sit well with her. Why should they risk their lives while she and Kurt hid? It didn't seem right. What better way to be a leader then to inspire the warriors by fighting beside them? Rosette made a silent resolve that if the going got tough, she would not be going. This was for the city after all, and that was more important that even her own safety.

With his hands-full he was only able to offer her a helpless smile. "Sorry," He apologized for his rudeness, "this is more of a hand full then it looks. But it is very nice to meet you Rosette." Much like a toddler by that account. Unable to shake her hand now, the resolve was there to do so when they got to the docks.

Her question brought a slew of his own ideas for the mission. "I do, its why I brought the alpaca fibers. Not only will it give us some real cargo, it if came to hiding the fibers would be useful. I also have blankets too. If getting away isn't an option, not being found would be safest and allow for further information gathering until an out was discovered." Testing the ground with her, he offered up an additional, "With two of us, if we step into a pile bigger then we can manage, one might need to go off first." Even though he had children, a young toddler at home and his girls, he'd sacrifice a lot for the guardians. The idea of a young lady with him getting hurt just didn't settle well with him.

He listened to her but cautioned, "Everything seems to be set up before our arrival, acting too much like we are in charge would not be the best course. Pae skills will be in order here, friends rather than subordinates." If someone came to his ranch and started telling him how to care for his alpaca and tried ordering him around? It would not go well at all. Picturing the resentment he'd fell in that position, he kept in mind the feelings of the crew. "We'll have to feel it out when we get there." Likely any attempt to act as a leader would leave to face in the mud. At least not a self appointed one.

She was bringing him back, back to a time before he built his farm. "Yes, I worked at the docks for months to build up the funds to make my own home and ranch. I didn't sail but I was on and off ships unloading and helping stow away the masts when they moored." By any means he would not pass as a seasoned sailor but he did have an idea or two about the ships and some experience feeling the world rock under his feet.

Having the sword at his side, and the young lady having none of her own, he just hoped that if the plan failed, there would be a way to get them both off safely. His sword play was about nonexistent. The weapon wasn't something he just played around with. It had been in battles, thing that didn't exist in his lifetime. It might know what to do but he certainly wasn't confident in fighting to protect another. It wasn't like he had offensive powers to assist.

Wait what?

Rosette had to stop herself from starting at the male, a bit dumbfounded about what Kurt was saying. Hiding? Fleeing? What was he talking about? It was almost if he expected them to fail...

"Kurt, do you not believe the Guardians won't lead us to victory? Besides, every man, woman and child in the City is counting on us. If I have to crawl on broken legs, I will see to it that this operation successes."

She paused for a moment before speaking again. "We were also told this is a test of our leadership. If push comes to shove, yes, we will have to take charge. Having some feel of who I will be working with is better than working with strangers. We already have a bit of status over the troops if we are to keep them in line...I still would like to meet them."

Well at least he knew more about ships then she did. "That good, I'll have to find something I can perform without suspicion then."

Maybe this was going to be harder than she originally thought.

She was very young, the more she talked the more he could hear it in ever word she spoke. Her ideas of leadership were woefully lacking. Taking a deep breath, he slipped into father mode as easy as one would slip on a glove. "The Guardians will set us on our path, and give us the tools we need. They will not, however, hand us victory. It is up to us to earn it." There were some, who seemed to think if they just asked for something it would be handed to them or else they did not have the Guardian's favor. Or worse, that the Guardians did not exist because of that.

"Our mission is not to fight, as it was given to us. If something goes wrong, returning to the city with intel is vital. Victory under Their orders, not under what pride might lead one to do."
By her words, he worried that it was the very notion of pride that might cause her to fight when it was best to flee. If they were meant to take on and destroy, then that would have been the mission. It was not, the contact had told them that much.

Touching on her idea of leadership he reminded her, "Leadership is more then just saying this or that and having the others just fall in. But you understand this," She had to, she didn't strike him as dictator-general. The caution still seemed warranted. "Just remember we are not organizing this, it was done for us. Neither of us will ever be as good at that as the Guardians." Sent by them yes, but it could be very easy to sabotage the mission by undermining the frame work put in place. "We'll meet them, setting sail is busy work but it doesn't happen instantly. Once on course, it will still take quite some time"

Something for her to do that won't draw attention? "The crows nest would be a decent spot for you even if someone else is assigned there as well. You'll do well." Quicker to spot trouble and higher to escape if need be. They weren't given orders to fight, that weighted on him. The guardians were infallible, but could not override free will, free will was the variable that could work against or for them.

Lots of talking back there. Clearly, they could keep up a swifter pace then, if they had breath enough to yammer. The Avalon zipped back and barked in a deceptively loud voice, "Oy! Pick up the pace, kids!" With that, he was off in a blur of light, leading the pair of angels ever on to the boat docks.

*****

The docks were abuzz with the usual activity; ships unloading foreign goods, business-minded Pae setting up booths along the bazaar to sell and trade, shouting bids to entice passer-by to check out their wares. It was much like the City in that respect...though here, one ran the chances of finding all types of Pae'il present.

At one dock, a trading barge like any other waited, and this was where the Avalon fairy discretely led his temporary charges. There was no fanfare for the occasion; the ruse was already in place. Hania was simply escorting the rest of the crew to their ship.

"Welcome aboard, kids," he quipped as they crossed the ramp onto the ship. Some of the crew looked up from their tasks, nodded in a brief, but friendly manner, then returned to work. Much to do before setting off. Now that they were safely aboard the ship, Hania lowered his voice to address the angels. "Everything is in place below decks. The crew will show you around and get you settled in as soon as preparations are finished to set sail. Just act natural, have faith, and do not fear." He knew little of these two, honestly, but they had been selected for this important mission, so...clearly they were suited to the task. With a brief bow, he straightened and nodded to them both. "Go with the grace of the Guardians." Without another word, Hania flitted off the boat and back to the shore. He had other business to attend to.

Most of the crew seemed busy with preparation, but Kurt and Rosette were free to explore the ship as long as they stayed out of the way. As time to depart neared, a few hands were freed up to help them get settled and answer some of their questions.

"We'll likely have a couple days of sailing ahead of us, if the winds are on our side," one offered. And far more than that if they're not!" another shouted in reply from the far side of the deck, following up with laughter.

The general atmosphere seemed friendly, if a bit formal. Still, the crew was polite enough to Kurt and Rosette directly. They'd be helped to settle in, then given some simple tasks to help out. As they moved throughout the ship, they could get to know some of the crew, as they'd be about to spend a lot of time in one place together. Even when it seemed they disturbed some quiet conversation, the crew was swift to snap to attention, curious if they could help their new commanding officers in some way.

Coming to the docks felt a lot like a second home. For the months he worked up to earn his home and alpaca, this was where he stayed day in and day out. Hustle and bustle followed around as he walked through. A quick hello here or there to pae he knew from business, he had to decline talking longer. It was a real threat in his mind that he'd be left behind. A ship waits on no one.

Casual brief chatter here or there, he moved with his guide all the same ending conversations faster then normal but it wasn't completely out of the norm. On the docks, it wasn't like they had much time for chatter either. Business waits on no one, either.

Once aboard, he had to stand still a few moments, disguising it as listening to the fairy. The rocking of the ship always took him a few moments to settle with. Though his exposure was usually to help load or unload, never for an actual journey. Overloaded as he was, he bowed his own head as much as he could, "Guardian's speed and favor to you as well." Now came the fun part. He'd be lying if he didn't admit to some apprehension. The Guardian's wouldn't choose him if they believed he couldn't follow the mission. With two of them, which part was he expected to play? The Guardians didn't wait for anyone, either.

Taking his goods he found an unsealed box to place them in, last minute addition to the shipment. Accepting a place to put his backpack, it felt uncomfortable to be away from the rest of his things in case he needed them but he also needed to be able to move around. The sword stayed.

"Lets see if we can give that wind some encouragement!"
Smiling to the crew he was quick to jump in where he could, and even quicker to stay out of their way. A crew that had worked together didn't need him messing with their rhythm but there were still things he could do. Leading by kicking back and watching everyone else work was not his style.

Any mere chance was used to look around. Not lingering to any one place, he wanted to be aware of his surroundings without acting too suspicious.

((Twitch will be unable to continue with the current notice due to extenuating circumstances IRL, so Rosette will be given a new challenge at a future date and be written out of the remainder of this notice.))

*****

The first day passed without major incident, the winds favorable in sending them on their way south. Dinner was served with the crew gathering on deck to eat beneath the stars. It was during this time that apparently, Rosette discovered some...difficulties in adjusting to life on the sea. Showing all the usual signs of sea sickness, she retreated to her cabin for an early night.

Plenty of food, light drink, even some songs filled the night before the hour got late. The crew began to scatter, night crew to their posts, the rest to bed to rest for the following day.

*****

After Kurt had retreated to his own berth for the night, he would receive a quiet knock at the door. A demon, one of the crew members he'd worked with earlier in the day, peeked his head in hesitantly. "Sir? Uh...could we talk a moment? If it's not too late?" When he wasn't chased away, he glanced back into the hall hesitantly before slipping inside and shutting the door. He seemed to wring his hands for a moment, then shake off his anxiety with a faux cough. "Err...some of the crew have some...concerns with this whole arrangement. I mean...we've got no problem with you, sir. You seem to know your way around a ship and all. But..." He shrugged. "Some of the men have said that they're not comfortable following the orders of some...'untried, untested woman'. Their words, of course. Just...I thought you should know."

He wouldn't normally have been so forward to come to a commanding officer with news like this, but...he'd drawn the short straw after dinner. And he did agree...Kurt should know, just in case. The crew had concerns...and there had been another group muttering after dinner...

During the working day, he didn't give much thought to Rosette as he was busy. It was important to him to work just as hard as the crew. In that goal, for the work time he spent it with them. Talking and trying to gain a rapport, he focused solely on them and the mission. However, when down time came, he noted the younger angel's condition and worried over it. The Guardians wouldn't have assigned her if they didn't think she could handle it, right? It was a struggle, fighting with that very issue.

He had a plan for her, that as soon as they found the source of the trouble, she'd fly away to give the report while he stayed behind to ensure the rest of it went to plan. Sitting on his bed with his hands folded against his chin, he pondered if that was even possible. If she stayed ill, there was no way she could fly like he wanted her to. The liability weighed heavily on him. Again he tired to remind himself that the Guardians picked her for a reason.

It was during that time he heard a knock and invited the crew member into his cabin. It was important for a leader to welcome his crew, to make sure they knew they were valued and heard. Heard he did, remaining completely silent and attentive to the demon's concerns.

The crew had a similar issue with the arrangement. Guardians forgive him but he had to do something about it. "Thank you for bringing the crew's concerns to my attention." Crew was the word the demon had used but he had little doubt that the demon didn't feel the same way.

Worried he was disobeying the Guardians, the tough call was unavoidable. Once again he silently prayed that the Guardian's would forgive him. A leader meant making the tough calls.

"I am going to write a letter and send her to deliver it to the City. Don't worry, I'll fix this."
Was he making it worse? Even in fighting it, he still smiled at the demon.

He'd need a back up plan, another angle would be preferred but anyone loyal to the guardians would do. "Any concerns that the crew has can be brought up to me at any time. We are a team in this." Leadership by earning, not by being a dictator. Those were words he believed strongly and would live by them.

Rather than just say he was going to do something, he showed himself by going to his desk and pinning the missive. It was an update. Nothing to report at the time but he wrote what ever he could to bolster the letter. Adding a prayer for the Guardian's to forgive him. He addressed it to the Avalon fairies assuming they would be the best one to receive it.

Finished with the letter he turned around and addressed the demon with a seemingly innocent question, " By the way, how strong of a flyer do you consider yourself?" There was a job for someone, if he for whatever reason couldn't finish the job. Someone else needed to. With one back up plan about to leave, he needed another.

When Kurt said he was going to write a letter and fix this by sending the woman back, the demon's posture relaxed and he turned to go, having done his duty. A voice reminded him that the Guardians had sent them both...hadn't they? Was this okay? Well, it wasn't his place to question, clearly. Just knowing it would be taken care of by someone in charge, well, that was good enough for him.

But apparently the angel wasn't done yet. At the question, the crewman looked back, puzzled. "Decent enough, sir." Did he need an escort for the woman? In her shape, she likely wouldn't make it back on her own, that was for sure. If she could have made the trip at all. But, he certainly couldn't carry her the whole way or anything.

Before he could get 'volunteered' for such a task, he decided to make his exit. "Err...have a pleasant night, sir." And he was gone.

*****

The next morning, Kurt would learn that Rosette remained too sick to make the return flight home. A couple of crew members had volunteered to look after her until she got better, but until then, she wouldn't be going anywhere. It seemed that word had spread that Kurt had intended to send her home...for better and worse, it seemed.

Some of the crew seemed warmer than the day before, calling out to their 'captain' from their duties, bidding him a good morning, noting the pleasant weather and the wind at their backs.

Others...less so.

Murmurs spread through some of the crew, though they died quickly when Kurt was spotted close-by. Snippets and short phrases such as 'Isle-living stranger' and 'fraternizing with primitives' passed from mouth to ear. During the midday meal, a sly comment that 'maybe what Rosette was suffering from wasn't just sea sickness' finally resulted in blows. The ones who threw the punches were reprimanded and locked in the brig. Well...for lack of a proper brig on what was supposed to be a cargo ship, they were sent below decks and confined to their quarters until further notice.

Tensions were rising, and they were still at least a day from their destination.

The demon was smart, Kurt had to give him that. It was frustrating because he had a job for him and off he poofed. With a heavy sigh, Kurt sat on his bed and rubbed his face before pulling his hand up into his hair. This mission wasn't going as he planned at all. His ace was sick and would be leaving in the morning and the back up plan was too smart to fall for it. The idea also left him disobeying the Guardians.

Making peace with it, as a leader has to make hard calls, the end of the day came.

The Guardians were punishing him.

This was yet another plan foiled. Grumbling when he found out Rosette couldn't fly, he had tried hard to convince her to try. However, not a cruel man, he couldn't force her when she was that sick. As to avoid taking his frustration out on her, he just left the cabin and thanked those that would look after her. What had been a solved problem just became his albatross.

While it seemed he had earned some good will, good will that he returned eagerly, he wasn't blind that others didn't share this. By the time the fight broke out, the poor angel had about all he could take of it. None of this was his direct fault as he could see it. However it seemed he was accountable for it.

Rather than risk blowing up and sinking himself further, he ate and left for his cabin to cool off. For the most part he did a good job of keeping his composure before he had gotten to where he felt safe. In the cabin with the door closed he could grit his teeth and kick the bulkhead. Doing so only managed to hurt his foot.

After dancing around holding said foot, he was forced to sit when his good leg hit the cot edge. Gravity reminded him to sit. It was time to think. With a sick Rosette, he was chained to a ship that was in danger. Something happened to the other ships and it wasn't sailor error. When that happened to his, he couldn't just leave Rosette behind as he went to make his report. The demon he picked for the job had gotten out of sight before he could be nominated for the job in his stead.

The Guardians knew what they were doing, but as a mere mortal he couldn't figure out just what that was. They were punishing him for trying to deviate Their plan and he felt it. It was time to think of a new one. When the trouble started he needed his crew whole. Right now he'd give anything for a solid quartermaster who knew the crew to get them working together.

What could he do to turn this all around and at least have everyone get along. Ignoring Rosette seemed like a step, if he proved he wasn't babysitting her or keeping her close. That could backfire as well. Seemed all his plans were backfiring.

He had to get back out there, twenty minutes of cool down could be seen as just the same as a weakness. What else could bind a crew already mishandled into diversion? Sea-shanty? Working on the docks he knew a handful or more songs. Such songs kept the pace for work and were a sailor thing for the most part.

Since nothing else he was doing had worked thus far, and it was proven by divinely bad luck that his planning wasn't working, it was time for a different approach.

Leaving his cabin he started humming the bars to a more popular song he'd heard. Seemed a fair one, of good seas. If he could get them going it would help the day's work and just might liven the mood a little. He wanted better attitudes and to try and inspire a little good will towards himself. Not that he didn't throw in just as hard as the crew in any and all tasks.

Between it all he made a greater effort to try and get to know the guys, spending a few minutes with every one not in the hold. This was between the shanty solution and working just as hard if not harder. Smarter was still better than harder but he was working against a bad tide.

When the day was done and he had done everything he felt he could do short of letting them all get cross-eyed drunk, it would be time to talk to the crew in the hold. He had no ill will to them and knew he'd need them as well when whatever came, came.
