LOCATIONS

Is it an event? Is it a roleplay? It’s both! These locations function as ongoing, RP oriented mini-events that vary from location to location. Here’s how it works.

A location refers to a specific setting within the wonderful world of Alternia that can be interacted with as an ongoing event by shop trolls. Each location has a pool of possible encounters that occur when a number is rolled from that pool. Each location also has an encounter rate -- for instance, trolls can roll an encounter every day, every 4 hours, every Sunday, etc. Trolls are encouraged to roleplay reactions and interactions during their exploration of a location and can post without rolling as many times as they would like. In fact, if trolls interact with each other and breach 500 words each, their explorations are eligible for a RP point! Trolls may also get extra rolls per day from specifically exploring a location as a group, depending on the location. As this is effectively an ORP, you're welcome to interact with other characters who are also exploring the same location (assuming they're in the same area as your troll), and not just your own group.

The encounters rolled are most often a simple text prompt of what the troll finds, does or experiences while in the location. Exploration can mean anything from investigating an old tomb to frequenting a sandwich shop and seeing what’s new on the menu on a night to night basis.

In addition to in-character development and RP points for activity, exploring a location can also offer rewards such as novelty art (at the discretion of the individual/s running the LOC), RP opportunities, battles, rewards within the locations, and may unlock certain events that other trolls may take part in. Once all of the events in a location have been exhausted, or if a certain event triggers something special, the location may close, stay open indefinitely, or convert to something else – something mysterious and exciting! The possibilities are endless!

Example

[LOC] Wishing Well of Four Fronds
This RP is open to all shop trolls. Trolls are not required to roll and may post as frequently as desired. Posts containing rolls must have at least two sentences of RP to be counted. If trolls interact with others and reach 500 words doing so, this RP can be counted for 1 RP point. Each roll interacting with the fountain does not need to be a new day in character, and can simply be a new action that the troll takes any time after the previous action.

The old Wishing Well is a well-frequented and mysterious old shrine in the middle of the woods. It gives off a rather creepy air, and the water within the well fluctuates dramatically in terms of color, temperature and height every night. Some say it’s because of all of the dead bioluminescent beetles in the bottom of the well that trolls have thrown in – others say it’s haunted. Will you tempt fate by throwing in a beetle?
Encounter Rate: Trolls can roll to interact with the fountain once per day.
Encounter Pool: Generate a number between 1 and 100 (or roll a 100-sided die).
Pool Results:
If you generate the numbers 2-24, 26-49, 51-74, 76-99:
You toss in your beetle, and a breeze rolls past. It’s as though the well took stock of your wish.

If you generate the numbers 1, 25, 50, 75 or 100:
Quote the mule for your encounter prompt!

Special numbers that require the mule to be flagged typically indicate a particularly important encounter that may lead to a special event or reward. As an example:

Results Pool Potential Possibilities:
If you generate a 1:
You fall into the well. Oh gog! You won’t be able to get out of there until someone else comes by and helps you – and no one can generate a number at this location until you’re out of there.

If you generate a 50:
You find a slimy little amphibious friend! He wants to be your friend. Isn’t that sweet?
(cosmetic art!)

If you generate a 100:
Something’s floating in the well. It’s… It’s… Yep. It’s definitely a dead body. You have unlocked a personal CYOA event; PM the mule when you’d like to take part in the event. In addition, no one can generate a number at this location until you or whoever else wanders by can pull this corpse out of the well.

FAQs!

Q: If you are exploring a location as a group, do you roll once per person or once per group?
A: Roll once per person! If you have a bonus for being in a group, you will roll once for your whole group.

Q: When in a group, do results only apply to the individual that rolled the result? (re: items found)
A: This depends on the item found. If the item is a piece of custom art or is a flavor-item then it will likely stay with the troll who found it unless it's tradeable in-character. But, if the item is necessary to unlock something in a location and a different character in the same group has the necessary item, it's considered to be a successful unlocking in that case. Typically the flavor text of a result will show whether the item or event can be shared by the group.

For example "You're showered with beetles!" vs. "You've been bitten by a beetle!"

Q: Can a character group hop: stick with a group for a few days, fly solo for a few more, then join a different group?
A: Absolutely! Make sure that you make this clear IC or in an OOC note that you are flying solo, and don't roll extra rolls for bonuses if so.

Q: Is there some sort of GM-regulated passage of time?
A: This will depend on the location! Very casual locations are unlikely to have a passage of time, while others may be more monitored. There are also other locations that WILL have a specific time that they are available in-character. If time is relevant it should be mentioned in the given location description, but if you have any doubt don't hesitate to ask!

Q: If you roll and unlock a location, do you still wait for the allotted time to explore the newly unlocked location?
A: Locations are the general setting, while sub-locations are unlocked while exploring a location. As an example:

[LOC] Oldman McGee's Farm is a location. You roll and unlock The Stables! The Encounter Rate of Oldman McGee's Farm is once every 3 hours. You must wait 3 hours before you can explore The Stables, because it's a sub-location.

If the text says otherwise: "You unlocked The Stables! You get an extra roll," then this doesn't apply!

Q: Does each person need to unlock a sub-location for themself?
A: This is dependent on the location, and will be described in the text. If the text does not say that you can include group members in unlocking a sub-location, then just the individual who rolled can explore the new location. However, you're typically welcome to roleplay in the location that your group members have unlocked! (That is, assuming that by "unlocking" a sub-location you didn't actually fall down a trap hole or something. smile )
