Harland hadn't tried to encourage Alistaire testing his limits on others. In fact, some selfish part of him probably never would; he didn't want to tell Alistaire to go touch other people, he didn't want to think about Alistaire leaning his head on someone else's shoulder in the dark. Harland had a smile sneak onto his face while he remembered that, despite how tense he still felt even now.

Harland stayed still, watching Alistaire, wishing he could make him less anxious, relax a little more. Harland wished he had some kind of magical ability to ease Alistaire's anxieties. Unfortunately, all that he could do was walk the slow and patient route, but that was enough for him in the first place. He just wished he could save Alistaire the pain. Some distant part of himself figured that the pain was necessary. He wondered if Alistaire had been hurt before, and distance was a self-defense mechanism.

"Hmm?" Harland managed to answer, from his throat, as Alistaire said only and paused. A wide smile spread across his face as Alistaire said only one thing, and he felt his heartbeat speeding up so acutely that it was almost painful. Harland didn't try to interfere or help, just waited, and then held out one hand to take the vest. "Let me hang it up for ye, so it doesn't get wrinkled," Harland asked, softly, not moving to bridge the gap. If Alistaire handed the vest over, Harland would go put it on a hanger in his closet.

"Mo chroi, that's a long way, and ye've come a long way already," Harland said. He nodded, and took a step up to Alistaire, still barechested. He reached one hand behind Alistaire, gently and slowly, to press against the small of Alistaire's back. Harland leaned in, and he couldn't help it: he pressed his lips to Alistaire's neck, first, kissed his way up the skin of his neck until he reached Alistaire's jaw, one more kiss, and then he let his lips brush Alistaire's mouth but didn't quite connect at first. He had a wicked smile on.

This was terrible for him, and he loved it.

For a split second, the part of Alistaire that wasn't entirely settled felt a horrible desire to run, to turn and yank the door open and sprint down the hallway to his own room. His stomach twisted itself into knots, and as Harland stepped closer, Alistaire thought he might have been drowning in the intensity of Harland's eyes.

A hand touched his waist and then slid around behind him, and his breath hitched in his throat. Warm, dry lips ghosted over his neck and Alistaire still couldn't remember how to breathe, fire racing through his veins, his chest tight, his breathing coming out hissed through clenched teeth. He didn't remember moving, but sometime during Harland's terribly distracting kisses, he'd lifted his hands, settled them onto the other's upper arms; and now Alistaire's gloved fingers dug into Harland's bare shoulders, his face flushed a brilliant red.

There was a gentle press of Harland's lips against his jaw, and then a brief, barely there skim over his mouth. Alistaire let out a soft growl of annoyance and impatience, and the grin on Harland's face was very much cat-got-the-canary.

Alistaire took a single step closer, fingers curling around the back of Harland's neck.

"I thought I told you to kiss me goodnight," he said, and there was hardly any space between them now.

Harland felt Alistaire's gloved fingers dig into his arms, and he was thankful not for the first time that Alistaire's gloves kept him from injury. Honestly, though, if he had to be scarred from anything he would prefer it was Alistaire.

Harland pressed his hips against Alistaire's and, his voice caught in his throat and too hoarse, managed to reply: "It's true; forgive my insolence?" Harland pressed his mouth against Alistaire's, because if there was anything he loved more than kissing Alistaire, it was Alistaire demanding that he kiss him.

It was dizzying, and Harland didn't think he could ever stomach pulling away. He did, however, stop kissing Alistaire for breath, leaning his forehead against Alistaire's. He decided he was definitely sleeping in his jeans, at that moment. "Was that the kiss goodnight you wanted?" Harland asked.

"You're such a ridiculous - " was all Alistaire got out, voice slightly annoyed, but Harland's mouth crushed against his, and then whatever else he'd been going to say was entirely lost. He pressed himself as close as he could, and there was no space between them at all; his arms wound around the other's neck, and though his fingers were trembling violently, he didn't let go.

(These kisses were far too easy to get used to, far too easy to lose himself in, far too easy to demand, to need, to want, and Harland's mouth was insistent, possessive, familiar, breathtaking, and a small, sharp gasp escaped him, muffled by Harland swallowing the sound, and the scrape of stubble against his jaw made his stomach twist, and he was drowning - )

It was a dizzying, spine tingling sort of kiss - or rather, several kisses, because it went on for a while before Harland decided to pull back. Alistaire's face was flushed, and he was mostly leaning against Harland, looking a mixture of exhausted and exhilarated all at once. He tilted his head up and pressed a last, lingering, close-mouthed kiss against Harland's lips before drawing back, exhaling a breath.

"Yes," he said hoarsely; and his gloved hands had slipped from around Harland's neck to rest on his bare waist. "Let's..."

Alistaire had run out of words, but he tugged on Harland, ready to sleep, ready to wrap himself in Harland's warmth and let it surround him as he drifted off.
