Sable walked, taking care not to trip as she made her way down the path. The moon was waning, and it had been full about a week ago, so although it was not pitch black, it wasn't easy to see. She wasn't sure why she was awake, exactly, but she'd been a light sleeper for quite a while now -- probably since she'd been on her own, herdless. She thought as she walked, and guessed it had probably been about two years now, and she was starting to think about finding a new herd to be a part of. It was getting lonely being by herself, and she missed having jovial interactions with herdmates and friends. But tonight, it's just me... she thought, sighing lightly. Her hooves hit the packed dirt path, making a dull sound as she traveled. Then, off to her left, she heard the faint rustle of a bush or tree. Curious, but cautious, she turned to face the direction it had originated. Hmm, someone else awake?? It'd be nice to have some company. Sable stood still and waited to see what, if anything, would emerge.

Swamp water green eyes glowed in the dark, small ear winglets flapping as she danced down the dark path, barely lit with waning moonlight. She giggled madly as she looked around searching for mischief.
Normally the mare was harmless. Slightly mad, but nothing too dangerous. Her mood swings kept in check by her familiar or her mate. But the absence of her familiar and a few other factors led to her more insane state this night. She was out this night letting her more predatory nature out to play as she was out for blood.
It had been too long since she last felt the bones of a small fish crunch beneath her hooves, or the slime of an exploding frog. She needed this again. And while she normally attempted to hide this side of herself from others, damned be any soq who stumbled upon her this night. For they might find themselves her target rather than the smaller, more defenseless creatures.
She heard the clip-clopping of hooves nearby. So she had a different target this night. Her mind cleared briefly, just long enough to advise caution. It wouldn't be smart to simply rush in. Perhaps she could lull them into a false sense of security before making her move.
'Little mouse, little mouse where are you? Little mouse, little mouse, I am coming for you.' She sang under her breath, giggling as she left the underbrush and joined the path. She would wait here for the creature to come to her...

The silence stretched on as both she and whatever had brushed against the bush held still. Her head turned side-to-side but there was still no sign of anyone. Sable took a tentative step in the direction she thought the sound had originated from. When nothing happened, she took another step, and then a third. She paused, uncertain. It was probably nothing, just a mouse or a rabbit, but what if it was something larger? Perhaps a wolf, or a bear? Or much, much worse - a Skinwalker? Her hide twitched, shuddering at the thought. No, she most certainly did not need to encounter such a being. Especially since she was alone with no one to help her defend against what would surely be vicious attacks.
Her mind raced. Various dangerous possibilities flitted their way through her thoughts, her heart beginning to beat harder. Would she be safe? Would she need to put her speed to use and dash away? “Calm down, calm down,” she told herself. “You’re getting frightened over nothing.” She gathered her scattered nerves and stood a little taller. She steeled herself, determined not to appear scared, and moved slowly toward the source of the sound once again.
