Brief Personality: Oleander is proud to be Kalona. She sees no cause to eat anything but the meat of the living, to fight a glorious battle...
But there is a tired look to her. Loss of her mother and sister has worn her down. She will never not praise them, sing of their glory, but in all fact, she is also worn and pained after watching her brother die. Having only her father left, she has no desire to lose her remaining family; but to that end, she will fight all. She knows of the rebels-- she has seen them.
While she is tired and calm, she is still Kalona's, still proud to be of pure blood, pure hearted in her ways. With non-Kalona, she is vicious and snappish, and does not easily befriend her dinner at all. Oleander-- named for the beautiful flower of a lethal plant - is not cruel, however she is a female not to be trifled with.
All things considered, though...
She isn't your friend, and she is disinclined to make friends easily to shield herself more pain. Of interest is her less-hostile nature to mothers, and foals. While she views lessers as less, weaker, and certainly potential prey, she also doesn't intend to massacre foals or mothers... Perhaps, a throwback to her own personal trauma...
What is the relationship like with her father?
Oleander is... Attached, quite closely to her father. The stallion whom taught her to take pride in her lineage, her family, the stallion who raised her when mother and sister died and brother lost? To her, he is more valuable than the rest. He is family, he is hers. Losing him- to see him disappear -- would break her, in ways that would see her attack and kill her 'betters', her herdmates. After all, she can guarantee her line is pure and... Forget, easily, that others may be...
Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray herd.
Please explain why the mare chooses this path:
Oleander was silent, watching her father slip away.
This meant so much to him-- so much to the herd...
She was confused, closing her dark eyes, and paused.
Foals. The lessers would have foals, fillies and colts too young for war. Too young for--
Oleander's mother was shielding her filly from danger, from the circling Soquili as they prepared to strike. Oleander huddled by her sister, eyes wide, alert, taking it all in. An ambush, a battle. They would all come soon. some for who?
Her. Her mother. Lilliance beside her. The foal breathed and the Soquili attacked.
Oleander fell trying to run, closing her eyes as her mother was beset upon, her sister, screams of demon, screams of monster, all screams against she and her mother, her sister. Her mother fought, fighting well, hard, but her sister's scream caused Oleander to remain still, eyes shut, shivering faintly. Hooves moved around her, thrashing, stamping, her mother's screams, her sister's cries playing in her ears...
She lived because she played dead. Her father had been devastated, her beloved older brother, long dead. Gone. Taken.
The mare still heard her mother and sister's dying screams at night, a haunting sound that hurt the Kalona deeper than anyone but the proud stallion her father was knew.
Her father whom trusted her. Loved her. Raised her with her brother, her dear, wonderful older brother.
She understood. If the Herd struck, it would be a screaming she knew only to mean ultimate suffering, a massacre... Like her family had faced.
Oleander bowed her regal head, eyes closing.
She would remain, pray her father was not found.
And if he was, she would carty on as they always did.
Seeing to it for all the glory they deserved for the pain the lessers gave unto them, that the foals, and the mothers be spared.
