Not that he minded speaking of mechanical matters, but he did appreciate the momentary lull in conversation as the Fae seemed to get lost in her own thoughts for a while. As much as this intellectual individual fascinated him, he only had so much to talk about before he, too, simply wished to let his mind wander.

Not that he would have much of a chance of doing that now.

"We're here." Cosworth said rather unceremoniously, as he drew to a stop outside a small, stone-walled and thatch-roofed abode, with small windows and something tall and thick, more akin to a smokestack than a chimney on one side of it. Most distinctive were several hap-hazard piles of what looked like discarded scrap, bizarre looking to most pae, but to his new companion they were recognizable as gears, pistons, frames, crank cases and other mechanically inclined parts. A mixture of stone, wood and very few metal parts lay about, most showing some form of damage, yet Cosworth seemed to be keeping them around for one reason or another.

All was quiet and peaceful now. That first impression was inaccurate, of course- usually he would be running some engine, or at least his furnace, generating steam and heat, and generally alarming the wildlife. Cosworth went to one particularly large pile of stuff, grabbed what seemed to be a pole of some sort sticking out of it, and heaved upwards, revealing that it was one of the shafts of a cart, and the whole pile of junk (with some difficulty from Cosworth) pivoted up about the axle and slid noisily off the back of the cart.

"Sorry about the mess, I almost never have a visitor." He bent over and cleared away some debris near the cart's wheels. "I kind of like it that way though. Not to say I mind having you here, I'm just not really a social faun." He pulled the cart free of the pile, and it rattled out somewhat unwillingly. The wood was clearly not Laisidhiel quality, and the whole assembly looked in appalling shape. "So, perhaps I haven't looked at this in a while." He raised a hand and slipped his fingers into the untidy hair at the back of his head, not scratching at all but showing his discomfort nonetheless.

Elyta took it all in with wide eyes, wings still buzzing with seemingly endless energy. "Oh wow," she murmured, looking around. Perhaps it didn't look like much to other Pae, but to the Faerie, it looked like a luxurious palace. Course, she wasn't rating based on appearance, but on the quantity and quality of workable materials scattered about. And being so far removed from everyone else, the ability to spread things out like this, even outside the home...

"This is amazing!" she exclaimed, happily buzzing over to one pile, sorting through some gears and cranks, then noting something shiny in another pile and zipping off in that direction. The crashing sounds of the junk pile being shifted off the cart fortunately distracted her from her explorations and she looked back towards the Faun curiously. Hovering over Cosworth and the cart, she voiced skeptically, "Err...you sure this is gonna' work?"

"No." Was the faun's curt reply. He bent low to inspect the cart's axle, and his expression turned sour. No wonder it was rattling- the axle had rotted through, likely from moisture trapped under the pile of discarded engine parts, and it had splintered from the mere action of him rolling it forward a few yards. Cosworth rubbed his jaw thoughtfully, taking on a pensive stance. This would go nowhere, without at least a new axle, and probably some bed planks as well.

"Young miss, I'm afraid what we have here is a case of neglect and poor maintenance." He straightened up and leaned on the wooden frame, watching it bend dangerously. "My fault entirely. But you know what..." The scraggly engineer stepped back from his worn cart and sighed deeply. He was silent while he pondered a course of action, which to him was normal, but to others not used to his eccentricities, it was quite an awkward pause.

Perhaps going on longer than might be normal in casual conversation.

Most pae might have continued their sentence by now.

Or cued the opposite party into saying something or making a suggestion. Sometime soon.

Finally, Cosworth disappeared into his cottage without so much as an 'Aha!' or 'Wait here a second.' When he emerged, he had in his arms a hatchet, a large file and various woodworking tools. His mouth had curled upwards into the barest of grins, and his eyes carried an unusual look of energy. "You seem to be pretty good at working with wood. Perhaps you'd like to help me fabricate a new axle, and I can put this old wagon on indefinite loan to you, think you're up to that?"

Elyta was left waiting for the end of a sentence that would never come. After hovering over the engineer, puzzled, she finally wondered if it had been a question instead. As he vanished into his cottage, she called after him, "No. What?" Giggling to herself, she shrugged and hovered in mid-air, mechanical wings humming steadily as she waited. For as odd as he seemed, she liked the Faun. Not that others hadn't called her 'odd' as well.

What was wrong with 'odd'?

She couldn't help but look around the area again with new appreciation. Alright, so perhaps a few things, like this poor wagon, had been left in a state of disuse. But this much space with all these materials...oh the things one could do! To be honest, it had been a while since Elyta's experiments had gone much beyond the 'idea' phase. She'd lost a little of the drive she'd once had when she left the City the last time. It was sad enough when no one shared in your interests, but to openly dismiss them as 'foolish' and 'pointless' was disheartening. She'd lost her drive for some time, only doodling some thoughts idly, otherwise spending time only gathering things to make herself a home in the forest. She hadn't gathered many extra materials, nor spent much energy on prototypes or trials until recently. Time away from the City had done her some good, and she'd just decided to start trying to build a few of her passing ideas as working designs again.

One failed test, a simple conversation about inventions, and now she was eager to get back to build something else again.

She'd have to start picking up some supplies again.

Or, it seemed, she wouldn't even have to wait until she got home again to get to build something.

Elyta grinned in answer, cracking her knuckles in preparation. "That's all? Sure you don't wanna' make any improvements while we're at it?" she laughed.

"Well all it really needs is a good, sturdy axle made of wood and... Wait, improvements?" Cosworth looked from his wrecked cart to Elyta and back to the cart again. Certainly he'd never considered anything about it that needed to be improved, but then again, all he'd used it for was to store junk that he probably didn't need anyway. Now, he wondered what about his rickety cart could possibly be improved. Elyta's suggestion was tantalizing to a craftsman like himself.

The poor faun, however, was limited in his imagination. He could dream up tremendous ways to harness heat and energy, but for strengthening or adding features to something as mundane as a cart? The best he thought of that didn't involve an engine was adding another pair of wheels. Which was not an altogether new idea.

But of course he did consider mating an engine to the cart, which most decidedly was a new idea. The wheels were turning the ideas in his head, and soon, he hoped they'd be turning his cart too. He had seriously never considered this.

He glanced at his female company. She certainly wasn't like any other Pae he'd met. They were just far too alike, and the way her face lit up at the prospect of doing some materials work? There was something pretty exciting about it. Like she not only was enthusiastic about helping out, but that she also knew what she was doing. "Well then, it sounds like you have something or many things in mind, actually." He gave her a cryptic look. "Care to demonstrate or explain?"

< One construction montage later... >

Elyta straightened up, brushing off her hands and using her wrist to shove a loose strand of hair out of her face. "Well, maybe it's not a masterpiece, and I'd still like to think we could take it further, but...not bad for a first project together, partner!" she laughed.

Rather than simply replacing the splintered axle and rotted planks, she'd suggested a few 'improvements' for the cart's performance. Granted, this only opened doors for new possibilities, but...she was supposed to use this to get her own previous invention home, after all. She could expound on the cart's potential another day.

Or they could.

At least the improved suspension system she'd suggested would make the ride smoother for whatever (or whoever for that matter) was being hauled about in the renovated cart. Now, if they could add some sort of propulsion system...

Wings stirring to a soft hum, she rose up, looking at the cart from all angles, knocking here, giving it a shake there, then nodding as if satisfied by its apparent stability. Grinning, Elyta alighted once more next to Cosworth, holding out a hand. "Good work, partner!" The work had left her hair in disarray, loose strands dangling all over, some soaked in sweat...yet, for such a fancy-looking Fae, she didn't seem to even notice, let alone mind. She was still preoccupied with an idea dealing with an engine and a crankshaft...

Filing the thought away for later, she continued, "Probably should get moving before someone decides the remnants of my experiment would make nice firewood," she chuckled with a hint of nervousness. It was too real a prospect to be entirely a joke.

"You know," the other inventor said slowly, regarding their handiwork, "I suggest you bring that back when you get the chance. I may have an idea for how to rig up an experimental drive assembly to it so it can move on its own, but I can't say I have the parts or the fuel for it yet." He sighed regretfully, but shrugged afterwards as if to say 'that's life'.

It seemed about time for Elyta to retrieve her own experiment. As much as Cosworth might have wanted to escort the young lady back to her things, the day was rapidly fading and more importantly, his knees were killing him. Pae didn't age- but they could certainly wear a bit thin if they didn't take care of themselves. And the scruffy Faun wasn't exactly a paragon of personal care. When was the last time he'd gone running? Yikes.

He placed a hand on the edge of their project and rolled the improved cart back and forth a couple of times. It was lighter yet sturdier now, and rolled with amazing ease thanks to their suspension and lubrication efforts. Even a female Fae could pull this a hundred miles if she wanted to. The hypocrisy in that mildly racist and sexist idea hit him in the form of another pang of soreness in his knees. Still, if only there was a male faun around here with the strength and speed to help the fair lass with her load...

He decided to send her on her way as kindly as possible. "We wouldn't want you to lose your materials, now. I'd love to help, but that hasty jaunt on the way here took more out of my legs than I anticipated." He rubbed his thigh for emphasis. "I ah, don't use them that much, at least not that vigorously." Truthfully, that was only half of it. Socialization- even with someone as interesting and with as similar interests as his new Fae friend- still seemed fairly tiring, and he'd need to get used to it. "I could still come along if you needed me to, but I suspect I may slow you down." An understatement, of course.

If Elyta was disappointed in losing her new companion, she hid it well. And perhaps she was a bit. The high she was riding following such invigorating work, both mentally and physically stimulating, waned somewhat at the revelation that this was where they parted ways.

At least for now, she reminded herself quietly. Hopefully.

The entire day couldn't have been a dream.

She felt a pang of guilt watching the Faun rub his leg; she hadn't meant to push earlier. She'd thought they were in a hurry and then they'd gotten to talking and...zipping through the trees with such stimulating conversation...

"Nah, it's fine, I got this," she said, waving a hand dismissively with a grin. "You've done enough for me today. I really appreciate the help. And the cart," she laughed. She could have ended it at that, but the mention of coming back to develop a propulsion system for the cart? A drive assembly at least, and the possibility of making it move on its own? Granted, the fuel issue would have to be solved first, as well as getting materials, but...

It was also an invitation to meet again.

Nearly giddy with glee, she buzzed forward with a grin and without a thought, threw her arms around the Faun. "Ah, thanks, Cozzie!" While close, a devious grin crossed her face and she leaned towards his ear to whisper, "Sorry 'bout the legs, hon. Next time, we'll keep the strenuous activities isolated to that big, wonderful brain of yours." Still grinning, she pulled back, patting his cheek before zipping away.

Taking the cart handles, she gave the device an experimental tug. After the initial tug, the cart rolled easily, thanks to their improvements. Once the inertia was started, it would be nothing more than keeping it moving in the right direction really. "Alright, I'm off! You take care and rest up! And keep working on those ideas! I'll see what I can do about materials maybe," she offered with a wide grin and a wave before setting off with the cart down the less trodden path leading away from Cosworth's cottage.

It had been a good day.
