The day had passed and Rahim had kept, for the most part, to himself. He had been in deep thought and didn't want much to be interrupted, not by Jazi, not by Ly. There was much on his mind, and his thoughts had been heavy, but strangely enough, he didn't feel . . .sad. He was too proud to ever admit Suha had affected him so strongly as to cause him grief and heartache, but it was the truth. His love for the lioness had been great . . . but he had two new banu to care for, and they were going to be his priorty. From here on out, he could no longer pine for what he didn't have, but rejoice in what gifts he HAD been granted.

Jazi and Lycaena.

The pale coated female, Ly, was still a bit of a mystery to Rahim. They were friends, but she had been badly hurt by his lies. She had accepted her lot in this life, but he wasn't entirely sure she was happy or willing to be so complascent to the prides traditions for long. She would take work and consideration, especially if he did wish for her to love him. Jazi, on the other hand, was a little easier to manage. . .as well as much more complicated. She was a lioness of great passion, who wanted nothing more than to love. He had been more cruel to her than Ly when he brought her to the pride, and yet, she stayed. If she was bitter to him, she hid it with a smile. . .

But it was why today he was going to spend some time with her and her alone. As evening approached, the worst of the afternoon heat passing, the large lion picked his way back to the den, keeping an eye out for the green and brown touched female. He wasn't the greatest hunter in the lands, and he was certain his skills were perhaps a bit rusty, but he would get to see the lioness at work. Perhaps they'd get lucky and manage to bring home a kill together. . . but even if they went without for a night, he would do what he could to appreciate the experience with his banu.

he day's heat had been sweltering. Though it was her turn to hunt, she chose to wait until evening, when the air cooled. Well, she had to be honest with herself... she also waited in hopes that Rahim would indeed decide to join her for the hunt. She had paced about the den areas, quietly greeting other banu and watching the cubs play, trying to occupy herself for the day and stay out of Ly's way. She was positively twitchy with anxious hope. Things could maybe be better... soon. Maybe.

When the sun had nearly set, she sat by the den entrance, tail lashing and excitement making her eyes glitter. She had chosen to shove the worried, skeptical thoughts to the back of her mind. If he'd said he'd come, she would believe him until otherwise informed. Granted, she couldn't wait a whole lot longer for him. Pad or no, the hunting needed doing. But as he came into sight, she nearly leaped to her paws in joy. She controlled the surge of gladness and rose demurely instead of bouncing like a cub. "Pad Rahim!" She couldn't help but beam at him happily. "Have you come to join me in my hunt?" Best to inquire and not to assume, after all.

The lion approached his den, and caght the shadowy figure of Jazi sitting near the entrance. It appeared that she had been waiting for him. Not that the large lion really seemed to mind. Though he had never been accustomed to others fawning over him, and had often kept his distance from others as a cub, now that he was older . . more mature. . well. . . he couldn't help but be pleased. If there was one thing to be said about the green coated banu, it was her ability to try to please. One might not have recognized her as coming from the rogue lands with how she seemed to take to some of the more restrictive rules. She was certainly a bit more exciteable than some, but ultimately, she was a good choice, and he was glad she chose to stay.

What had she told him last time . . . something about love? About wanting to love him?

That was perhaps the most peculiar thing about Jazi. Despite his lies and the way he had manipulated her, she still chose to try to love him, despite all that. THough her dream was to find her love-of-loves, even when he spurned her and confessed to his lies, she didn't run or fight him in the matter. And in fact, she tried to make the best of her situation. . . even realizing that it was quite possible Rahim would NEVER leran to love her. Or at least, that was likely the most obvious circumstance. He cared for his banu, but up to this point, he hadn't paid them much mind and had no interest in learning to love them. But maybe . . . just maybe . . .he was growing up a little more. With his heart no longer set on Suha, he wanted to open it up to more options.

As she rose to her paws, Rahim saw the light in her gaze. Sometimes her entire demeanor was absolutely infectious, and even on his most seriosu days, he couldn't entirely fight it. Giving a nod, Rahim offered her the slightest of smiles. It was brief, but he had always been a bit of a serious sort. "I have come to join you this evening, that is, if you haven't changed your mind?" He didn't actually need her permission to join, but Rahim had always preferred his banu to be themselves, and had once promised his mother he would be the best. A little politeness didn't hurt. . . he wasn't a complete jerk, after all.

"Of course I haven't," she replied pertly, her eyes warm. She moved past him towards the hunting grounds, and on impulse bumped her head under his chin as she passed, gently dragging her cheek along his shoulder before breaking into a trot. Part of her thrilled in a good way, at the chance to show him affection, and another part of her thrilled in fear. Would he reject her? Scold her? Merely ignore her gesture? Who knew it would be such a risk to endeavor to find love. She had never imagined it would be like this when she'd run away from home, foolishly on a quest for true love. Now, if only she could make this work....

"What are you in the mood to hunt for, my Pad?" She glanced over at him inquiringly, letting him make the decision for them. Deference was a good thing with him, she'd found, and seemed to curry favor and gentleness.

Argh! Sorry for the delay. I lost my U'W muses for awhile there, but Rahim is INSISTENT to come out and play. And figure out how to court/make things right between Jazi. xD

The sudden touch did surprise the lion. He hadn't expected her to be so bold, and to feel her touch against his side and beneath his chin was . . . strange. But a bit delightful all the same. He had never been particularly affectionate as a young lion, and had reserved gentler moments between only himself and his mother or Suha. His brothers, and even his father, would have looked upon him as weak for being of gentler blood, so he . . . . avoided such things.

But he was his own Pad now. His duty was toward protecting and caring for Ly and Jazi. Now that he had realized the reality of the situation, that Suha was not has banu, and would likely never be, the lion was forced to make new decisions. He wanted to cultivate better relations between his two favored banu, and it was time to head down the path . . . without his most beloved Suha. She was his brothers responsibility now.

Though he had tensed at the contact, he gave no rebuke. She was awfully soft, and her playfulness and good cheer was rubbing off on him. Well, this was their time together, after all. For a moment it appeared as if her touch did nothing to him. His expression didn't waver, even as he got up to trot after her. His easy stride allowed him to catch up to her own, and as she turned to inquire, he let his shoulder brush her own, and his tail twined with hers for a moment. He wanted to let her know he was there, and in his own little way, he appreciated her earlier boldness.

"Zebra has always been my preference," he admitted, having found the black and white creatures succulent and a treat. "But, they can be tricky. I leave it to your keen eye to inform me what we shall hunt, as there is little guarantee what herd we might find this day." Much less whether or not they'd actually be successful.

She nodded acceptance of the responsibility to find them prey to take down. It was a little nerve-wracking, of course, but the touch of his tail twisting willfully around her own was all the positive reinforcement she needed. She broke into a lope, heading deep into the hunting grounds, alert and excited to find something to take down.

***************

In the end, it hadn't been zebra after all. It had been a little frightening to have to declare to him that all she could scent was a small herd of gazelle, but things had gone smoothly after that. After the thrill of working together to bring down a strong buck, they now lay panting, their initial hunger sated on the innards, the first things to spoil if not eaten swiftly. She was still panting faintly, but beaming across the kill at her Pad. What was he thinking, she wondered?

The stars came out overhead, and as darkness fell around them, she grew bold enough to ask questions she hadn't dared before. She rose and padded over close to him, settling down shoulder to shoulder with him. In a soft, private voice that would not carry across the grasslands, she finally asked, "What is it you want, Pad Rahim?" She tipped her head, looking up at him, letting the gentle evening wind stir her forelock. "What do you want in life?"
