Pride Basics Cert BG
Species:...
+ Cape Lions.
The pride was founded ages past. Being isolated from much of the outside prides, their bloodline has been pretty well preserved. Cape lions are becoming more and more rare, and as generations go on and new members move in from the outside, their blood has begun to thin. The nobility, however, strives to preserve this bloodline. They're extremely selective about who they allow into their line.
Runes:
The pride ranges in coloration and birth marks. However, like the Ela, they record their lives through markings painted onto their pelts. Unlike the elas, however, each marking has a pre-assigned meaning. The cubs are marked at birth according to a reading performed by the seers. As they grow, they may have runes added to them to identify their rank among the pride.

Mating:
+ Mates are for life. Flinging is frowned upon.
+ Only male/female couples. Homosexuality is not a part of the pride. The mentality simply does not exist. Any joining members of this orientation will be turned away.
+ Mates are named life-mates by the high oracle and added into the pride registry by the rune keepers. The rune master will then mark the couple with a matching rune. See more in rituals.
+ Lions are not allowed to breed with any other species. Both parents will be exiled from the pride.
+ Leopards and cheetahs are free to breed with eachother. They're essentially considered third-class citizens and not really a part of the pride. The offspring will be messangers as well.
+ Mating between classes is allowed. The children's class will be determined by the seers.
+ Nobles are almost always given arranged marriages.
+ Incest is -not- allowed.
Religion:
+ They believe in all the existing gods.
+ Life/Death, Order/Chaos are among the most highly regarded.

Classes:
+ Lions are assigned classes at birth. The runemaster mark the cub after the seers perform a reading and the runekeepers add the cub into the pride registry.
+ It's very rare for a lion to leave their given class. Military class, Common class, and Wisdom-keeping classes rarely cross. Only royals have the freedom to decide what class to join after an heir/king is decided.
+ It is possible, however, to move up through the ranks of one's assigned class.
+ Purposeful abandonment of one's class could have dire consequences.

The Cradle of the Gods:
The cradle of the gods is located within the highest of the three peaks that circle the seaside valley. The peak hollows out towards the middle, forming a small crescent valley filled with lush grass, towering trees, and a large pond fed by an underground spring. Much of the valley is surrounded the high stone walls of stone. The crescent opens unto the sea. Various gods offered their blessings to their birthing grounds in past generations, making it an ideal place to raise their young safely and happily. The surrounding cliffs bear hundreds of smaller caves- some leading into dwellings suited for the individual godlings, maintained by the oracles, others lead into a maze-like series of caves that only the oracles know how to navigate. Only oracles and gods are permitted on the grounds. Any others who are caught trespassing are punished severely. While they stay within the cradle, the gods and goddesses are the lords and ladies of the territory. Everything was created for them, every oracle is their servant.
The Mountain of Kings:
The mountain of kings is essentially the royal palace of the valley. While it is the smallest peak, it’s by no means the most insignificant. Here the royal family is born, raised, lives, and put to rest. The upper most caverns are opened up onto the entire valley, allowing the royals to oversee their kingdom. A single platform raises out of the audience chamber, standing hundreds of feet above the common grounds. Here coronations, the naming of champions, and the ascension of gods is overseen by the entire pride. The king and queen live in the upper chambers, the princes and princesses just below them followed by the lords and ladies. In the bottom most levels sits the gauntlet- the housing and training grounds for the military.
The Pillar of Knowledge:
The pillar of knowledge is essentially the library of the pride. The peak is divided into three levels- the chambers of knowledge, the rune's keep, and the seer's loft. The base level is the common area reserved for the welcoming rites for newly born pride members. Above them sits the chambers of knowledge, then the rune's keep, and finally at the crest of the peak- the seer's loft.
The Common Grounds:
The common grounds are centered between the three peaks. This is where the hunters, the nannies, and the commoners of the pride reside. It's an open grassland blessed with lush green fields and a large lake of fresh, clean water flowing out to the sea.

The High Ranks
Overseers:
There are only ever six overseers in the pride at a time. These are seers that have been hand picked as the successor to one of the council members. When a council member dies or sees fit for retirement, the successor takes their place.
Overseers are seers with an exceptional grasp on their abilities. Along with their ability to see beyond their reality, they know how to appropriately apply their gifts. Some use the knowledge they gain from their visions to create laws, some use their abilities to select appropriate apprentices for the higher ranks, and others give their assistance to large decisions.

King:
The king is the utmost authority within the pride. Only the council and high oracle may challenge him. The king handles mostly military affairs. The overseers handle the rune-crafts and the Oracles handle spiritual matters. In extreme cases, either the council or the Oracles may approach the king for his final word on a matter, though it’s rare.
The king is descended from the royal line dating back since the beginning of the pride’s history. Normally, it is the oldest son of the royal litter that is chosen as successor. In some cases, a younger male is seen as a more worthy ruler.

Queen:
The queen is often married to the king through an arrangement made by the council. A wise, level-headed lioness with a rich lineage is often favored. In rare cases, the king can appeal for his choice in mate- though it’s up to the council and the high oracle to approve in his choice.
The queen is in charge of the hunters and huntresses. She handles the common affairs of the pride. If the king dies and his queen remains alive, it‘s the queen‘s duty to hold the throne until the king‘s chosen heir is prepared to take the throne. Afterward, she steps down and becomes an elder.

Rune Master:
The Rune Master is the keeper of the writings. They are responsible for the recording and teaching of history, documenting every member of the pride and god, and appointing the members with their given runes as they come of age.
The Rune Master can be a female or male. They're typically a rune keeper that has ascended either by skill or divine favor.

High Oracle:
The high oracle is typically a middle aged to elderly lioness. Males are not permitted to this rank. The high oracle is in charge of the oracles. It's her job to oversee the progress of each growing god and report to the rune master so that the progress can be recorded.
Newly rebirthed gods typically meet the High Oracle before any other mortal being. Gods wishing to leave their offspring in the care of the oracles typically make their arrangements with the high oracle.
The high oracle is always involved with major decisions concerning the pride, marriages, and manages the blessings of the newly born pride members. Because of the gravity of the Oracle's responsibility, they are highly respected.

Birthright Ranks
Prince:
Princes are males born to the king and queen. The Princes are all at equil standing until an heir is chosen among them.
Princes lead a difficult life. As cubs they are tutored in the art of combat, educated in the pride‘s history, and asked to occasionally assist with the raising and care of gods. They are servants of the people and they are expected to know all aspects of the pride inside and out. As they hit maturity, they‘re expected to assist their royal parents in the up-keep of the pride. This can eventually lead to a prince joining the upper ranks of the military or the rune craft.
Some princes are offered to the goddesses as mortal lovers as well. Though fathering cubs does not give them right to shrug off on their duties.

Princess:
Princes are females born to the king and queen. The Princesses are often brought up to become fine ladies under their mother. Most go on to become oracles or rune keepers. Some go on to assist their mothers with the hunts, often leading their own hunting parties.
On occasion, a princess will be offered to a god as a mortal lover. If the god accepts the proposal, the princess will bring forth a litter of god-children into the pride. She remains within the pride.

Lord(s):
Lords are the male siblings of the king. The queen is married into the family, so their siblings are not considered royal-blood. The lords were raised alongside the king, educated, trained, and taught to respect the gods. Alongside the king and his offspring, they help attend to matters within the pride, especially if the king finds himself swamped with more urgent matters. Lords will often carry out inspections to insure that the different branches of power within the pride are being maintained fairly. Sometimes the lords join into the military, and because of their upbringing, most achieve high ranks.

Lady(s):
Ladies are the female siblings of the king. If they decide not to join one of the other establishments (oracles, rune keepers, huntresses), the Ladies often serve as a caretaker for the pride. She listens to the common folk of the pride, solve what problems she may, and reports to her brother for larger matters.

God-Child (Youth)
God-Children are the direct mortal offspring of gods. They are born with the seer ability and are highly respected among the pride. God-children are often born to a mother of royal-blood who was offered to the god as a mortal lover or a prince who was accepted as a mortal lover to a goddess. The mother (if mortal) will raise the cub until they become juveniles. If the cubs are born to a goddess, an oracle is put in charge of their upbringing if the goddess does not wish to raise them herself. When they grow, they are handed over to the seers to begin their training as seerlings.
God-children are always given names relating to their god parent's domain.

God-Chosen (Youth)
God-chosen seers are cubs who are born with the seer gift without a blood tie to a god or goddess. In a way, the god-chosen are considered to be more special, as they can arise from even the common ranks. Most over-seers were once god-chosen. The mother will raise the cub until they become juveniles. When they grow, they are handed over to the seers to begin their training as seerlings.

Privileged Ranks
Seers:
Seers are kept under the overseers, seeking their wisdom to translate and interpret their visions. The seers are the eyes of the pride, they bring their knowledge to all levels of the higher ranks so that the knowledge can be recorded. If a vision of a god‘s rebirth or birth is seen, the oracles are informed. If a vision tells of an enemy invasion or trouble at the boarders, the champions are informed, if a vision tells of a great time of change for the pride, the king and queen are informed. The seers are the backbone of the pride- it‘s their knowledge of what was, what is, and what will be that allows the pride to better themselves, prepare, and remember. As overseers age, they hand-pick a successor from among the seers to replace them.

The rune keepers are in charge of identifying the meanings of the known runes within the pride. They aid the rune master in dictating which runes should be assigned to cubs born without runes of their own. They also play a part in naming the new members of the pride based on their given and birth-obtained runes.

Scribes:
The scribes are essentially the historians and record-keepers of the pride. The record every vision, every commandment, every military operation, and every accomplishment within the pride. They assist the rune master in recording the members of the pride, their given ranks, and the family lines. They also assist the oracles in recording the gods that are born within the pride, the powers observed through the gods, and the family lines of the gods.

Oracles:
The oracles are most often composed of lionesses of royal-blood and exceptional lionesses selected by the high oracle herself. The oracles are in charge of the young gods that are born within the pride. On occasion, a mother goddess will bear a litter of cubs and leave them in the care of the oracles. The oracles are the replacement mothers for the cubs. They raise them, help them come to realize their powers, and inform the scribes of their progress so they might be recorded through their reincarnations. Oracles rarely take mates, their entire beings are devoted to the raising of god children. On very rare occasion, an oracle will choose a mate over her life as an oracle. In this case she‘s given a new rank.

Military Ranks
Champions:
The champions are warriors who have moved up through the ranks and granted the honor of the Champion rank and a unit of their own by the king and queen. The champions are put in charge of units of up to six Paladins, twelve Sentinels, and unlimited Outriders. The champions are the best fighters within the pride, devoted to the king and queen and the good of the pride. Champions are restricted to males.

There are typically six paladins to a unit. They serve directly under the Champions, charging into battle at a moment‘s notice for the honor of their king, their queen, and their pride. Paladins are primarily male. On very, very rare occasion a female proves herself worthy before the champions.

Sentinels:
The sentinels are essentially the guards of the pride. Twelve serve under a single champion and are stationed where the Champions direct them. The sentinels are the first line of defense, they stand posted outside of the cradle of the gods, the royal grounds, and the rune‘s keep. During times of war, the sentinels will march into battle alongside the Paladins. Sentinels are primarily male. On uncommon occurrence a female proves herself worthy of the post.

Outriders:
Outriders are the scouts and messengers of the military. They prowl the edges of the pride’s territory and the inner regions of the pride’s territory. No stone is unturned, no shadow goes undisputed. They raise the alarm in times of danger, alert the Champions if they hear word of any suspicious movements, and are the first lions that outsiders will encounter when bordering the pride’s territory. Outriders can be either male or female.

Apprentice Ranks

Seerlings:
Seerlings are young juveniles and adolescents who were born with the seer ability. Now that they‘re old enough to leave their mothers, they are taken into the order of the seers to learn how to cope with their abilities, how to translate their visions, and interpret them for the good of the pride. They often train under one seer, an older, more experienced lion who identifies with their talents.

Young Oracles:
Young oracles are most often the daughters of those of royal blood sent off to train under the oracles. The young oracles assist the oracles in the care of the gods, though they are forbidden to care for a young god without the direct supervision of an oracle.

Writing apprentices:
Writing apprentices are trained under both rune keepers and scribes. As the writing apprentices grow, they are taken under either a rune keeper or a scribe. Those that show talent in the memorization and identification of runes are taken into the order of rune keepers, those that show an exceptional talent in the recording of history and the written word are taken in by the scribes. In rare cases, a writing apprentice shows no talent for either and is given a new rank.

Recruits:
Recruits into the military are chosen based on displayed strength as young cubs. Most often, cubs bearing a thicker build or are born from a line of military fathers are taken into the military to train. They work under a champion, drilling daily and learning the fine art of warfare. Most of the time, common males are taken into the military.

Hunter/huntress:
Hunters are common adult lions who serve the pride by providing food for the members. Hunters are divided up into hunting parties designated and maintained by the queen. Most hunters are female, though it‘s not uncommon for males to enter into the hunting ranks as well.

Nanny:
Nannies are often times common female elders, though disabled females are given the rank. Nannies raise orphans and look after the cubs while the mothers attend to their duties. They also look after the wounded and the ill.

Common cubs born without seer abilities are given the assignment of ‘common youth‘. They‘re often taken into either the military, the scribes, or the hunting classes after their reading.

Rituals, Ceremonies, & Rites
The Coming:
When a new litter is born into the pride, the parents bring the cubs to the pillar of knowledge. Here the seers will perform a reading for each newborn. Next the Rune Master will assign each cub their runes based on the seer’s reading. Finally, the High Oracle will give her blessing. If the cubs are seers, they are each assigned a seer who will return for them when they are old enough to leave their parents.
The Trials:
The trials are reserved for young lions who were not born seer-gifted. Common youths are tested when they mature into juveniles before an overseer, a champion, and a rune keeper. If the youth shows strength above all else, they become a recruit into the military. If the youth shows wisdom above all else, they become a writing apprentice. If a female shows a deep connection to the spiritual, she is taken in as a young oracle. Youths of common ability are trained as hunters.
Marriage:
Marriage is performed by the high oracle, or a chosen oracle in her place if she is otherwise occupied. A male and female of the pride are brought before the cradle of the gods and their union is blessed. It’s common place for a small collection of friends and family members to attend and wish the couple their best. Following the ceremony, the couple is a mated pair until death.
God’s first flight:
When a god reaches adolescence, they are old enough to leave the cradle and the protection of the oracles. While much of the ritual is contained within the cradle, the god will fly above the pride’s lands before venturing out into the world. Much of the pride will gather to watch this event. Inside the cradle, the Oracle speaks with the god(ess) about his/her purpose in the world and gives the young divine her blessing.
Exile:
Exile is a very serious affair within the pride. When a pride member is deserving of exile the royals, the overseer, the rune master, and the high oracle gather. The oracle withdraws her blessings from the lion, the royals make the official decree, and the rune master places a mark on their forehead, often times scarring it in so it will remain until the end of the exile’s days. The overseer can overrule an exile if, during the ritual, they are given a vision discouraging the exile.
The Leaving:
When a member of the pride dies, their body is taken to the cradle of the gods. The high oracle speaks a prayer for their soul and recounts the life of the member before the pride. When the ritual is complete, the body is buried within the cradle of the gods, their bodies will help provide nourishment for the land protecting the gods from that day forth.
