Well it has happened again. I have gotten into an argument with a friend about the nature of the power struggle between Palpatine and the Jedi in eipsode 3. Me on the side of there being no heroes in the story due to the Jedi's corruption and arrogance and him on the side of the Jedi being justified in their actions due to what they knew.
And I decided that this arguement was so fun that I would love to sharpen my arguement against other people.
My main points: The Jedi were growing power hungry underneath the heel of Palpatine and were planning to take control of the senate themselves. THis is evidenced by their own words. MACE WiNDU: That could be a dangerous move ... the Jedi Council would have to take control of the Senate in order to secure a peaceful transition . . .
Doesn't that say a little something about the Jedi that them rising to power is the first place their minds go to? They were planning to take Palpatine down and take his place at the head of the table. Only long enough to "remove corruption" but can corruption ever be removed fully? And how could they insure that it wouldn't come back? Would they sieze control of the senate whenever they found it to be corrupt?
Mace Windu went into Palpatine's chambers with the sole intention of killing Palpatine. As evidenced by his own words yet again. MACE WlNDU: He has too much control of the Senate and the Courts. He is too dangerous to be kept alive.
Mace Windu never intended to have Palpatine step down or to face charges. Mace Windu went in there as judge jury and executioner. With nothing more than Anakin's word that Palpatine was a Sith. And Mace Windu is on record as not trusting Anakin.
MACE: It's very dangerous, putting them together. I don't think the boy can handle it. I don't trust him.

OBI-WAN: He'll be all right. I trust him with my life.

MACE:I wish I did.
Is my case compelling or are their holes?

The Jedi fell because they were too power hungry. The jedi had no business becoming generals in the military and becoming involved with politics. They were corrupt and paid the price. I do see a hole in that palpatine got by unnoticed for so long. One would think people who prided themselves on knowing things would notice the greatest source of evil nearby.

Awsome I finnaly found somebody that agrees with me. No matter what I say people just don't seem to accept that I have a point when I say that the Jedi had fallen to their own arrogance long ago.

Well it kinda fits in with them being blinded by their own arrogance. They believed that there wasn't a power in the galaxy that could face their might so they didn't see the growing threat of Palpatine just as they believed that it was their lot in life to have an unstoppable and unquestioning army of clones laid at their feet. They never stopped to wonder why a dead jedi paid for a clone army or how exactly Chancellor Palpatine knew about the clone army made on a planet that they didn't even know exsisted.

But Mace is a "Bad Mother ********", says so on his wallet.

Is this not justification enough?

I also think that the Jedi fell because they were so elitist. The jedi were out of touch with the common people and made it much easier for Palpatine to convince the public that the jedi had an agenda. The ivory tower they created made it much easier for them to die.

Hard to see, the Dark Side is.

Which is the entire reason why Windu fell to it. and why the jedi council was going to fall in their quest for more power.

Actually, they kinda fell to being not immune to deadly weapons.

It would have saved no end of trouble. Just look at Vader's "You can't blast me" hands!

well...yes. They were corrupt. But they were the least corrupt force in at the time. Besides, it wasn't all the Jedi that were currupt. Just a few. The rest were complacent. Not as bad, but they were not blameless. Still, I do not think they deserved the shellshacking then received afterwards.

"Do or do not, there is no try."
-Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back

"Only a Sith deals in absolutes."
- Obi Wan Kenobi, Revenge of the Sith

So yeah, it must have been all those years of solitude that led Yoda to become a sith. Pity, that.
