Well it has happened again. I have gotten into an argument with a friend about the nature of the power struggle between Palpatine and the Jedi in eipsode 3. Me on the side of there being no heroes in the story due to the Jedi's corruption and arrogance and him on the side of the Jedi being justified in their actions due to what they knew.
And I decided that this arguement was so fun that I would love to sharpen my arguement against other people.
My main points: The Jedi were growing power hungry underneath the heel of Palpatine and were planning to take control of the senate themselves. THis is evidenced by their own words. MACE WiNDU: That could be a dangerous move ... the Jedi Council would have to take control of the Senate in order to secure a peaceful transition . . .
Doesn't that say a little something about the Jedi that them rising to power is the first place their minds go to? They were planning to take Palpatine down and take his place at the head of the table. Only long enough to "remove corruption" but can corruption ever be removed fully? And how could they insure that it wouldn't come back? Would they sieze control of the senate whenever they found it to be corrupt?
Mace Windu went into Palpatine's chambers with the sole intention of killing Palpatine. As evidenced by his own words yet again. MACE WlNDU: He has too much control of the Senate and the Courts. He is too dangerous to be kept alive.
Mace Windu never intended to have Palpatine step down or to face charges. Mace Windu went in there as judge jury and executioner. With nothing more than Anakin's word that Palpatine was a Sith. And Mace Windu is on record as not trusting Anakin.
MACE: It's very dangerous, putting them together. I don't think the boy can handle it. I don't trust him.
OBI-WAN: He'll be all right. I trust him with my life.
MACE:I wish I did.
Is my case compelling or are their holes?
